World Aids Day – Let’s Call It A Night

***CHICAGO: MAC Cosmetics sponsored event 12/2/09 – Sushi & Drinks See Below***

Yes, yes.  Tuesday was World Aids Day, but what does that mean?

For many of us, it was a day like any other.  For those of us who have lost someone to Aids, every day we carry in our hearts the memories and love for people we’ve lost to this aggressive disease.  Why single a day out?  Because it calls us to act upon those memories toward a greater good.

Two easy ways you can help fundraise by barely lifting a finger yourself:

1) “Say Red” MIX & MINGLE: In Chicago?  On Wednesday, December 2rd you can enjoy a FREE mixer put on in part by the fabulous Patrice of Afrobella. Fabulous Sushi and drinks, silent auctions and beauty swag bags surround this evening of Cocktails and Conversation.  This is an Aids fundraiser for local organization Project Vida, and featured speaker is Emmy award winning activist Rae Lewis-Thornton.

Ai Sushi Restaurant & Lounge
358 W. ONTARIO
CHICAGO, IL 60610
$5 martinis ALL night, $4 sushi until 7pm.

Come on out, eat, drink, dish, and let’s call it a night on Aids.

2) PUCKER UP: MAC Cosmetics has a loooong history supporting Aids research.  100% of the purchase price for Viva Glam lipsticks ($14) go toward the MAC Aids Fund. Fergie is the most recent goddess for the campaign, and Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are selected for the next campaign, “From Our Lips”. Over $130 million have been raised since Viva Glam was started in 1994.

world-aids-day

I’ve known co-workers and acquaintances that have died at young ages, but the memory that saddens me the most is of a little girl named Happiness.  Many years ago I had a chance to help build a children’s home in South Africa.  Internet is not a dependable form of communication there, but after a long effort there was a reunion of sorts. The home was the first to house children that had been abandoned, and soon, Aids orphans.  Happiness was one of the original children to be housed in the new building, and her name was fitting.  For some reason she took a liking to me and would visit everyday.  She had a blinding smile and was so lovely-I wanted to adopt her.  She was one of the first people I asked about when reconnecting, and I was heartbroken to find out last year that she had died from Aids.  Although the home helps children that have HIV and Aids, she contracted this later on.  She was not the only one.

I still have her little entry in my book.  She will always be in my heart, and I will always be thinking and praying for her children and remaining family. Dollie_Nansmall

What can the rest of us do? Certainly there are the big, looming issues.  Directly volunteering.  Caring.  Friending.  But what if you can’t wrap yourself around that idea?

We should all do what we can.  Two options benefit you directly and put the wheels in motion for the organizations and people that CAN work directly.  If your job isn’t on the front lines, than support with pride!

WWPD? Susan Kim, Daybreak TMJ4

The WWPD (What Would Pros Do) segment gets in your face to find out what is on the faces of people who are on-camera for their profession. If the makeup is good enough for them, it is good enough for us!
susankim
Susan Kim co-anchors TMJ4’s Live at Daybreak from 5:00am – 7:00am with Vince Vitrano.

Do you have an on set makeup artist or do your own makeup?

SK: I do my own makeup.

What brands do you use to get HD ready?

SK: I use Make Up For Ever foundation, primer, and powder. Lorac, Nars and sometimes MAC eye shadows and blush.

Does the look you need for on-camera also work outside of the studio?

SK: I usually go work out after work and I wipe off a lot of it. If I don’t work out, I keep it on for the most part. Just too busy to take it off and start all over again. Sometimes if I’m home for the day, I just wash it all off!

~~~
Ed note: Make Up For Ever (aka MUFE) is indeed a great line, and Susan Kim picks her supplies up at Sephora.
EXTRA! EXTRA! DSQUARED2 – Milan FW and MAC early release
Dsquared show is all about geeky girls gone camping. Skin that glows from humidity…aka Face and Body foundation. ~ Gordon, VP Makeup Artistry for MAC Cosmetics
DSQUARED2 goes glamping!
MAC celebrates  DSQUARED2 as they wrap up the final show for Milan Fashion Week by launching the DSQUARED2 collection TODAY!
Perhaps the hotness/sellout of Style Black would leave the MAC masses collection-less far longer than desired? Original launch date was in October, so rejoice!
My favorites from this collection are the blue and violet greasepaints which will work well with S/B.  Nothing like mix and match to make makeup more fun.
I love the fresh, muted colors that still seem bright. Everything just reminds me of *new* for some reason.  The only product I applaud and scratch my head at the same time is the lip concealer (1st photo, last row).  Double duty can be pulled with your foundation or concealer.  If you are a collection purist though, pick it up.
MAC Graphic Garden at MayFair – Wauwatosa
If you live near Milwaukee (Wisconsin), run to Macy*s Mayfair for MAC Graphic Garden. Seems they got a shipment that was meant to go to Nordstrom, so they are unloading the goods where they landed. There are several different collections with a variety of product in the black & white makeup bags. Bask in your good fortune. (brush set pictured)
It’s Time for You to Shine
I don’t know about you, but I never have much luck with bronzers. Every summer they promise me the kiss of the sun, but after a swipe or two, no matter how light handed, I merely look like I’d been crusin’ for a brusin’.
This is why I am so excited about the abundance of shimmer highlights out now. They are cousins to the bronzer: Think of the promise of health and bloom – not with the strength of the sun – but with the soft kiss of the moon.
Three favorites:
Bobbi Brown Nude Shimmer Brick limited edition
This entire collection makes me weak in the knees, but the shimmer brick is the, er, highlight. This product is as close as I will ever get to glowing like a fresh faced 23 year old again. And god do I miss that.
Handpressed in Italy, it is the perfect combination of 5 pearl piments: pink, gold, bronze, beige, and caramel.
Double duty: All of these highlighters are great for use in the eye area, but this compact especially so as the colors are multiple and defined. Luvs!
P.S. These photos are a better indication of the colors. The website link color is not accurate in the least bit.
smashbox Artificial Light Illuminating Lotion
smashbox first created a buzz with Artificial Light, which leaves skin looking soft and dewy. It’s a tiny bit more unwieldy to work with than layering power, but it gives exceptional glow.
Don’t forget these all look smashing on your decolletage too.
MAC Mineralize Skin Finish
With the latest Color Craft collection, MAC has a powder version with triple color, as well as singular sets.
Go forth and glow!
Tutorial: False Eyelashes
I was asking around the other day whether women are wearing false eyelashes, either daily or special occasion only, when someone asked if I could give her a quick guide – four step max – on how to apply them. Sure! This is for you Meg.
~~
Product: For this tutorial I am using Revlon Fantasy Lengths Complete Kit, #91002 Intensifying. This kit comes complete with glue, which makes life easier.
If you want to get fancy, check out MAC or Shu Uemura’s legendary lash bar.
Step 1: Remove lashes carefully. Press on the lash and pull down, not across. Pulling across distorts the form and makes it much harder to apply.
Step 2: Apply a solid bead of adhesive and let it set for 60 seconds or so to get a bit tacky and adhere better.
Step 3: Set the outer corner down as close to lash line as possible. It should butt right up against it.
Step 4: Press. I use a cuticle stick to help get the lashes to the line, as well as pressing firmly against lid. Use caution.
Finished Product. At this point you can add mascara if you like to blend in your natural and the fake lashes.
So what do you think? Will you try it?
