Teen Choice Awards 2014: Chloe Grace Moretz

Celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh created the look for Chloe Grace Moretz for last night’s Teen Choice Awards using Votre Vu cosmetics.

“Chloe is wearing Valentino tonight; it’s a red and black blazer and shorts.  It’s kind of a baroque design.  Her hair is down and natural so we went with a semi-smokey eye and light lips to play off of the dark colors that she’s wearing.

After prepping her face with La Mer Moisturizing Cream, I started with her eyes.  I first smudged Votre Vu’s Le Joli Crayon in Charbon into her lash line. Then I rubbed a bunch of the pencil on the back of my hand, took a stiff, synthetic eye shadow brush and applied it like a cream eye shadow all over her lower lid fading up to the crease.  It will give the powder eye shadows something to stick to and will show through a little without being too intense.  I took the Palette Play in Nude and mixed the two shimmery brown eye shadows and blended it into her crease.  I smudged the same two colors underneath her bottom lash line and then lined her bottom waterline with Le Joli Crayon in Chablis.  This eye pencil is really smooth and soft and goes on so easily.  Since we wanted to make it a softer version of a smokey eye and keep it young and fresh, the Le Joli Crayon in Chablis gave it a bit of smudgey-ness but wasn’t too harsh like a black or dark brown would’ve been.  To finish of her eyes, I applied two coats of Votre Vu’s Eiffel Power mascara just on her top lashes.

I applied a foundation for the base and then went back with the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard under her eyes and anywhere else that needed extra coverage.

For her cheeks, using a flat, stiff brush I applied the Votre Vu Vu-On Rouge in Bouquet Rose to her cheeks for a fresh glow.  This type of brush is usually meant for concealer, but I really like using it to apply cream blushes because it picks up more color and I find it goes on a little bit smoother.

To set her makeup, I applied the Zone Out T-Zone Shine Eliminator in Lumiere concentrating on the center of her face.

Next, I filled in her brows with Arch de Triumphe in Fair.  Chloe has great brows already, so I just used an eyeliner brush to fill in any sparse areas and then brushed them out right after for a more natural look.  I really love Arch de Triumphe, it’s a really great product that gives color without being too severe.

Lastly for her lips I applied French Kiss in LouLou from the tube by dabbing it on.  Even though the formula is sheer, I only wanted a little bit of color so the main focus was her eyes.

Golden Globes 2014: Julia Louis Dreyfus

Julia’s haltered Narcisco Rodriguez dress was key

Celebrity makeup artist Karen Kawahara created the look for Julia Louis Dreyfus at the 2014 Golden Globes using Votre Vu products. The bright orangey-red color dress inspired her to focus the look on a stronger eye with a lighter lip.

Get the Look:
“Votre Vu Attentive Crème du Jour was used to prep the skin while the Amour D’Ore Multi-Vitamin Oil was placed applied to her body before hair and nails to ensure that it had time to absorb into the skin. I also applied a little bit of the Luxee Yeux as well around the eye contour.

I applied the Love Me Deux Foundation in Cannes to the entire face and concealed the under eye with a mixture of the Lingerie Pour Les Yeux in Light and Medium.

I also used the Lingerie Pour Les Yeux in Light all over the lids and applied powder on top of it to ensure that the eyeshadow lasted all night. I like to apply eyeliner first to create the shape I want in the eye and then shadow on top of that. I used Le Joli Crayon in Charbon and pushed it in between the lashes, then started with a very thin line in the inner eye, gradually getting thicker towards the outside. I added a little wing on the corners to give the eyes a lift. To create a popping eye, I used Votre Vu’s Palette in Play in Copper. The lightest vanilla shadow was placed towards the inside of the eye and the lighter copper color was brushed over about ¾ of the outside lid.

I also, very lightly, lined the inside of the eye with a burgundy color. The darker copper color in the Palette in Play was also placed close to the bottom lashes underneath the eye. To finish off the eyes, I used Eiffel Power Mascara as well as some individual lashes.

Julia, in on the opening skit

Vu-On Rouge Color Accent in Bouquet Rose was used to give some color on the lip and cheeks. I applied all over the cheek using my finger. I wanted to create pale lip, so I used a lip brush to apply the color and went over with soft coral for a bit of sheen.

I mixed the Arch de Triumphe in Fair and Dark Brown to go over the brows since I didn’t want them to seem too dark.

Then I used the Beaute en Bronze Blush which was very sheer and then applied the Dior Blush in Amber on top for a bit more color.

Lastly, I set her makeup with Belle Poudre in Light.”

Golden Globes 2014: Robyn Wright

Celebrity makeup artist Tricia Sawyer used Orlane products to create Robin Wright’s gorgeous look for the 2014 Golden Globes.

WINNER: Robyn Wright took home the 2014 Golden Globes winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama

The look was inspired by the dress that Robin is wearing which is a very 1970’s club, vintage dress. “It’s a beautiful champagne color like a golden nude, so we kept to the color scheme.”

To prep the skin, Tricia used Orlane’s Absolute Skin Recovery Anti-Fatigue Masque. Afterwards, she applied Anti-Fatigue Absolute Radiance Cream all over the face. “I love this cream because it helps to retain moisture for long periods of time and Robin has a long night ahead of her so it’s perfect!”

Next, Tricia applied Orlane’s Absolute Skin Recovery Smoothing Foundation in Shade 20 with the Antonym Foundation Brush and spot concealer. To set the foundation, she dusted Orlane’s Poudre Libre all over the face.

To highlight and attract light for photography, Tricia applied a shine stick to Robin’s cheekbones, cupid’s bow, and the center of her nose. Then, she used a Dior coral blush on the apples of her cheeks and the Orlane Bronzer under her cheekbones and along the jawline for more dimension.

For Robin’s eyes, Tricia applied Antonym’s Certified Natural Eyeliner in Noir along the inside of the eyes and on the outer rim. She smudged it out with a small eye shadow brush and then used a customized eye shadow palette for a nude look. After applying a strip of lashes, she used Orlane’s Volume Care Mascara on the lashes.

To give her lips a nice color, Tricia used Dior Addict’s Gloss in #343.

For her arms, Tricia used Orlane’s Refining Arm Cream to moisturize and then applied the Orlane Bronzer to give a bronzey look.

Orlane products are available at www.orlane.com.

In the wintertime, I am a major fan of the Absolute Skin Recovery Smoothing Foundation. Check it out.

Golden Globes 2014: Kate Mara

The striking Kata Mara gets her makeover with French cosmetics love from Orlane

Celebrity makeup artist Coleen Campbell-Olwell created Kate Mara’s look for the 2014 Golden Globes using Orlane products.

Get the Look:

“For Kate’s look tonight, she’s wearing a gorgeous silver/gray, structured gown.  We wanted her look to be a bit more intense and her skin to be luminous and glowing.

I started with the Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream and massaged a liberal amount into her skin so it would be really hydrated.  Then, I applied the Absolute Skin Recovery Eye Contour around the eyes the keep the skin really smooth.  This product is really great for prepping the eyes for concealer and skin we were doing an intense eye, we wanted to area to be nice and smooth.

When applying her foundation, I mixed the Chanel foundation with 1-2 drops of Orlane’s Morning Recovery Concentrate and applied with a sponge.  The Morning Recovery Concentrate gives the foundation an instant radiance and adds more luminosity to the skin.

I then contoured the cheeks just a little bit with the Orlane Bronzer using a swirling motion with the brush so that there wasn’t a concentration of color.  We didn’t want a bronze look at all so we just added a bit of the bronzer for more depth.  To add a bit more color, we used a soft rose blush on the apples of her cheeks.

For her eyes, I first used Antonym’s Certified Natural Eye Pencil in Noir on the waterline and along the top of the lash line to add more intensity to the eye. That was blended out to create a smokey effect. I then added a navy and gray shadow along the top of the eye and a little bit underneath, close to the bottom lash line. To finish the eye, I used my favorite mascara Orlane’s Volume Care Mascara. This mascara is AMAZING and helps to give great depth and length.

Then I used the Dior Eye Shadow Styler to give her more arch in her brows. It also helped to give them a fuller look.

To highlight the corner of her eyes and above the cheekbone, I used the Highlight Care Brush.

As for her lips, I just added a nice balm to compliment to already beautiful lip color she has.”

Orlane products are available at www.orlane.com

Her look was made complete with a silver J Mendel dress, Smythson clutch, Lorraine Schwartz jewels, and Charlotte Olympia shoes.  Stunning!

Makeup tips & tricks with MUA Mally Roncal & VISINE®

Twitter/Facebook darling makeup artist Mally Roncal has such a fun personality online, it’s not surprising she must be enjoyable in person as well.  Her client list includes the likes of Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Rihanna, Mariska Hargitay.  Mally doesn’t leave all of her tips to the elite – she’s happy to share ways to enjoy the summer with Solessence readers.

Mally’s signature is a flirtatious eye, and she believes it is important to wear makeup everywhere.  This reminds me of a “Do you wear makeup when running?” conversation that was on Twitter.  I believe it was @roclobster that said something along the lines of  “Of course. I’m not a farmer.”  But I digress.  Right into more makeup discussions!  So does Mally wear makeup to the beach?

   Mally says “Of course I wear makeup to the beach!  And don’t think just because you’re sun-kissed you don’t need to wear makeup.  The key is to look polished but not overdone. ”

She also agrees to keep it a bit easy, and recommends this routine:

  • Slather on the SPF everywhere!
  • Curl your lashes and coat with waterproof mascara to avoid runaway eye makeup
  • Give definition to your face with a waterproof brow pencil
  • Peach is the new pink and that goes double for lip gloss.  Mally Beauty Lip Gloss in Be a Peach or Mally Beauty High Shine Liquid Lipstick in Summer Peach
  • Don’t skip concealer or you’ll look tired.  Mally Beauty Cancellation Conditioning Concealer SPF 25 is the perfect summertime option
    …And when the elements get the best of you:
    Diffuse a sunburn and bring your skin tone to more of a natural color with a dusting of powder foundation, then make sure to work with neutral colors so you don’t draw attention to the redness
    Even the most flawless makeup can’t hide red, irritated eyes – luckily VISINE® Summer Spectrum Relief™ is specifically formulated to soothe irritation and redness caused by chlorine, salt water, sun and wind so keep one in your beach bag at all times

After a day at the beach, have fun with a colorful summer look:

  • Pink up your pout with fuchsia lipstick and make eyes pop with a bold blue, green or even yellow eyeline
  • If you go bright, go big…don’t mix bright hues like hot pink, electric blue or green with anything too dark and earthy

 At the end of a long summer day:

  • Before you wash your face, gently remove eye makeup (even stubborn waterproof mascara!) with VISINE® Soothing Wipes.
  •  Store them in the fridge for an extra-cool, refreshing treat.  These are also great on the go!

She doesn’t mention mention allergies in her tips, but this is the first year I had a lot of trouble with my eyes.  I had a chance to try the Visine Total Eye Soothing Wipes and they work very well.  Even when washing was not bringing any relief to my eyes, these pads somehow removed the gunk, for the best description possible.  The best part?  I did not have to tug or rub the delicate tissue around my eyes.  Also, the pad wasn’t saturated in a way that made them too wet.  It just easily and effectively removed whatever was irritating, and at night it also helped remove makeup.  Bonus. This product is a CEW beauty winner, and I can see why.

  • Coconut and fruit sugar derived cleanser
  • 8 moisturizers
  • Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers
  • Opthamologist and dermatologist tested

 30 generously sized pads are included. You could easily cut them in half to extend use, using one side for the left and one side for the right.  At $6.99 it is a beauty aid that can’t be beat

Go forth and be Mally Beautiful, beach babes

MACLovin’: Bloggers’ Obsession on sale June 21

Early this year MAC had a call out to beauty bloggers to try their hand at making cosmetics. Over 80 applications were submitted with moodboards, color swatches, and pleas and tears I’m sure, for a chance to brand their own lipglass or eyeshadow (where oh where MAC, was the nail polish love?).  The bloggers were flown on a secret mission to the Toronto labs where they worked side-by-side to select, sift and sort their chosen pigments.  The end result is a rich collection from 9 very lucky ladies you may even be reading on a daily basis: Bloggers’ Obsession

The collection will go on sale online only as of June 21 for six weeks.

For fantastic photos of the experience, check out Christine Mielke (Temptalia.com), Amber Katz (beautybloggingjunkie), Lianne Farbes (TheMakeUpGirl), Patrice (afrobella), Wendy (nitro:licious), Lesley Ellen (LipstickPowderPaint), Lily (BeautyMaverick), Karen (makeupandbeautyblog)

Perfect Finish: VP Joe Biden Gets Pretty for the People

When People Magazine arrived at the salon today, I knew it would be a hot issue because not only is it People (the ONLY magazine our clients ever fight over), but I thought the Charlie Sheen cover might create a little excitement too.  Little did I realize that the big hoo-haa was just inside: an interview withVice-President Joe Biden, and two favorites had been featured.  Victoria Stiles (Makeup Artist) and Robyn Bloom (Purely Cosmetics) have both been interviewed for this site, and both played important roles.  Victoria was the makeup artist for the shoot, and she chose Purely Cosmetics to prep the Vice President for his photo shoot.  What works with his complexion?  Skin Smoothing Foundation in a blend of California Blonde and Neutral Medium, with a dusting of Diamond Perfect Finish.   I know talent and good product when I see it!  Follow the links to find out more.

Stocking Stuffers: Sigma Makeup – Kabuki Brush

It’s only October? Just about the time to start making a list and checking it twice.  Fret not, I’ve done the heavy work for you.  From now until Christmas I’ll be sprinkling in posts that showcase the perfect stocking stuffers for beauty lovers.  Simply give out these favorites to end up on everyone’s nice list for next year!

Friends, take note: There isn’t a woman alive that can’t use a good kabuki brush, and Sigma Makeup has the cutest around.

A good kabuki makes powdering pleasurable.  Dense brushes keep their shape, pick up fine particles and places them easily and evenly across the skin.  Sigma’s kabuki ($25) is high quality with a dense base, super soft no-shed bristles, and a cover to keep them from getting bent.  This is my biggest peeve with kabukis, because if there is a cover the bristles always get damaged.  Sigma’s slider base keeps everything in order, and in a fancy purple, pink, red and black option.

What an upgrade? Go for this option instead:

The Hollywood Glamour Kit ($49) comes with an easy to clean soft carrying case, a kabuki brush and a darling mirror compact.  Enjoy storing your Sigma makeup brushes in the case too, but I recommend carry-on for air travel.  I know someone in TSA is enjoying my set right now!

Purchase any of these items and a wonderful selection of affordable, good quality makeup brushes at SigmaBeauty.com

L’Oreal Puts Lockdown on Shu Uemura – Leaving US

L’Oreal USA, a 35% share owner of Shu Uemura since 2000, is shutting down all US locations for the premiere Japanese brand.

DS_banner_ShuUemura

Shu Uemura is best known for the cult favorite eyelash curler (in 24k gold even), gorgeous assortment of false eyelashes, and lavish cleansing oils.

shu_cleansingoils_goldThe beauty industry has been hit especially hard during this economic downturn, and very high priced brands like Shu, as beloved as they are, are not weathering well. The company was known for ingenious and unusual use of ingredients, seemingly sparing no expense to add to the line. For their deep sea water, which is a claim to fame, Mr. Uemura had a special pipe drilled and fitted to bring up the liquids from a depth (nearly 3300 feet) which he felt would satisfy. The water is piped in to his exclusive Japanese spa as well.  This kind of product quality and care is difficult to sustain in down times.

shuuemura_eyelashesAs much as this announcement will strike fear into beautyphiles, I don’t think it will do much harm. Most Shu fans in the US have probably never been to a Shu store, and buy merely on reputation and word of mouth. Would it be nice to saunter up to a counter to experience items first hand? Of course. But unless L’Oreal is intending to kill brand competition here, there is a chance the Shu legacy can actually improve by using luxury marketing’s oldest trick: increased desirability through limited accessibility.

She’s Got The Look – Jennifer Lawrence – Sundance Film Festival

wireimage_sundance_jenniferlawrence What did Winter’s Bone actress use to prepare her skin from the harsh Utah climate? Makeup artist Jordan Long saw that Lawrence’s skin was protected with skincare line Votre Vu:

“I used the [Tragic Magic] Rescue Creme to calm her skin as she had slight redness. I also used the [Champagne Kisses] Enhancing Lip Balm which provided a nice nourishing base before I applied lipstick.”

WWPD? Susan Kim, Daybreak TMJ4

The WWPD (What Would Pros Do) segment gets in your face to find out what is on the faces of people who are on-camera for their profession. If the makeup is good enough for them, it is good enough for us!
susankim
Susan Kim co-anchors TMJ4’s Live at Daybreak from 5:00am – 7:00am with Vince Vitrano.

Do you have an on set makeup artist or do your own makeup?

SK: I do my own makeup.

What brands do you use to get HD ready?

SK: I use Make Up For Ever foundation, primer, and powder. Lorac, Nars and sometimes MAC eye shadows and blush.

Does the look you need for on-camera also work outside of the studio?

SK: I usually go work out after work and I wipe off a lot of it. If I don’t work out, I keep it on for the most part. Just too busy to take it off and start all over again. Sometimes if I’m home for the day, I just wash it all off!

~~~
Ed note: Make Up For Ever (aka MUFE) is indeed a great line, and Susan Kim picks her supplies up at Sephora.
EXTRA! EXTRA! DSQUARED2 – Milan FW and MAC early release
d2_mac
ds_homepage
Dsquared show is all about geeky girls gone camping. Skin that glows from humidity…aka Face and Body foundation. ~ Gordon, VP Makeup Artistry for MAC Cosmetics
DSQUARED2 goes glamping!
MAC celebrates  DSQUARED2 as they wrap up the final show for Milan Fashion Week by launching the DSQUARED2 collection TODAY!
Perhaps the hotness/sellout of Style Black would leave the MAC masses collection-less far longer than desired? Original launch date was in October, so rejoice!
My favorites from this collection are the blue and violet greasepaints which will work well with S/B.  Nothing like mix and match to make makeup more fun.
I love the fresh, muted colors that still seem bright. Everything just reminds me of *new* for some reason.  The only product I applaud and scratch my head at the same time is the lip concealer (1st photo, last row).  Double duty can be pulled with your foundation or concealer.  If you are a collection purist though, pick it up.
Max Factor pulls out of the US Market
Pat McGrath. Giselle Bunchen. Carmen Electra. Old Hollywood. These are a few things a beauty company would kill to be repped by.
Alas, Max Factor had all of these trappings but will still pull out of the US market by the beginning of 2010.
What is ailing the 100 year old company? Strong competitor sales. Rival CoverGirl sales continue to rise yearly according to spokeswoman Anitra Marsh, and are nearing $1 billion a year
Proctor & Gamble, which bought Max Factor from Revlon in 2001, has seen worldwide sales of $1.2 billion a year but seems to fare better overseas. The line will continue to be marketed outside of the US.
This brings an end to the company that developed the first makeup for movie stars, and color matched skin tones. Regardless of where we are now with our beauty, For a look at Max Factor’s time line and the revolutionary way they influenced beauty worldwide (indeed, coining the term “makeup”) check out P&G’s site for the history
or pick up the book about the founder.
From my point of view there are a couple of reasons this brand struggled:
  • I remember Pan Stick fondly, as it was what my mother wore. Sadly I don’t think formulations kept up with the times, because when I graduated from liquid to semi, I did go back to what was familiar but found it didn’t work well for me.
  • I think the last campaigns, while getting great modern talent, featured looks that were too esoteric, too out of reach for the modern woman. It seems Max Factor was trying to woo the makeup artist community, when it really needed to go after the masses.
I have sentimental feelings toward the brand and hate to see it leave. It is a lovely piece of history for US beauty.
Will Vlog for Makeup Line – Lauren Luke
Little did Lauren Luke realize that when she started offering makeup tips in 2007 on YouTube, she would one day end up with tv and gaming appearances, and not one but two offers for her own makeup line. The popular vlogger from the UK is also proud of defying standard beauty stereotypes, classifying herself as an “average size” woman breaking through where it is “hard to get attention”.
Luke launches ByLaurenLuke on her own website April 2009.
