CND Shellac Layering: Northshore Nude

After doing *every single CND Shellac today*, and most of this week, in Cocoa with Beau layered over, I have dubbed this combo #NorthshoreNude.   Cocoa on right is beautiful as is, but Beau over it adds a layer of (as one client put it) glamour.   What’s hot in your salon?

To book your CND Shellac manicure in Milwaukee,

Updated to show, I have two Northshore Nudes, depending on skin type:

Color Swatches – CND Shellac Spring 2011- March Release

Click here for the new Fall September 2011 CND Shellac colors and here for layering options

Finally!  New CND Spring/March swatches can begin. I have seen the colors and layering options a few times over, and they are fun!  Thanks to CND I was able to provide better photos of the spring 2011 Shellac release  for you in this December post  and, as I did with the first set of Shellac, I’ll be adding actual hand watches.  These are all two coats with base and top.

I’ll continually update this page until all Shellac swatches are available.  To get you this information before the March launch, so you know what you want to order and/or try on first, I’m posting photos as I can get swatches.  They will be updated for better lighting/consistent look. Keep checking back.

Rock Royalty – the bottle is not a match. This is a plum/purple

Black Pool – Very rich black

Hollywood – True to the bottle, and even prettier.  If you can handle a bright red, this one is flecked with metallics.  Stunning.

Iced Coral – A very useful layering color, this is also a great peach/pink with a hint of green.  I’m not the biggest fan of frosts but this one is perfect for my skintone.

Gotcha – This bubbly pink is much brighter than the original photo but softer than last year’s Tutti Frutti. Shown with glitter

Cocoa – This is a lovely camel that serves as a really pretty base for Shellac layering or with the right skin tone as an updated neutral.

Original Cocoa photo swatch:

Decadence – This is a tough one to photograph.  It keeps popping out cherry red – I’d say the thumb is the closest in shade.  In terms of swatching, it is very similar to the CND Jason Wu collection red.  It is on the sheer side, like a jelly.  I didn’t think that was possible with Shellac.  Very, very pretty, but looks best with three coats.

Hot Pop Pink
It doesn’t get much pinker than this! Similar to OPI’s Strawberry Margarita.

Beau – You may wonder why you are getting the color Negligee in a Romantique bottle, but wait, there are differences. Beau comes on with a bit of a violet/blue and white transparency. This alternates as a good layering and base color as well.

Clearly Pink Clearly Pink is that crystal clear with a hint of pink color many have been asking for. Although Pink & White/Traditional Frenches have been out for many years now, think of the base color used. There you have it. It makes for an extremely clean looking nail, but is a little too clear if you have any trouble spots or damaged nails. Example below shows how nice it looks on nail, and how exposed any damage will be.

Masquerade
Mmmm, this is one I was waiting for. It has the same richness as Red Baroness but a lot more pink. It photos a bit mottled. While it is highly pigmented, 3 coats can probably ease out any shadowing if you are having troubles. Very true to the bottle color, even a tad darker.

Mother of Pearl

Contrary to most impressions, Mother of Pearl is not a white Shellac with glitter, but a clear with glitter.  It’s very random how the glitter lays – I find multiple shakes and laying the bottle on the side helps get the glitter on the brush.  Very, very hard to photograph, you can see a pic of it overlaid on Black Pool below, as well as how it can look coming out of the bottle

This new batch of colors plus the first release brings 24 colors total, but CND’s original goal had been to have 100 by fall.  Not sure if they are still up to that but these new colors bring the a huge variety of layering options.  Here are a few:

Victoria’s Secret: Milwaukee Commercial

When Milwaukee’s Calatrava wing gained the distinction of getting named Sexiest Building, it was a no brainer for Victoria’s Secret to film a commercial on site. Voila, the Miraculous PushUp Bra that gives you up to two extra cup sizes! Wait, did you notice the building?

AJ Bombers Wins Food Wars “Best Burger” in Milwaukee

Back in May, Food Wars filmed a little burger competition between social media favorite AJ Bombers and Sobelman’s.  They promised an airing in about 2 months if the secret was kept quiet.  Milwaukee must not have been too good!

The episode finally aired tonight and AJ Bombers was declared the winner in front of a crowd of about 300.  Of course, owners Joe & Angela Sorge knew the outcome, but it was another thing altogether to finally bask in the glory.

Both places make a tasty burger, but honestly, AJ Bombers is just the bomb.  Portabella mushrooms on well sourced meats, veggie options and a Cheers type atmosphere with great service.  What’s not to like? Well earned.

The Fall Fashion came out today, pages 14A-16A.  Did you pick up an issue?

I took a quick pic of a few photos.  Thanks JS and special thanks to essie nail polish for sending their gorgeous Fall into Fashion collection before it even released.  People are raving about the colors, especially Sew Psyched and Velvet Voyeur!

Editorial Shoot: Fall Fashion for Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

hillaryfry_mjsshoot_essievelvetvoyeur

Yesterday I had the opportunity to work as the manicurist on the Fall Fashion shoot for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Editorial is what I love, and it was a blast to be a part of this. I felt very lucky – I had full creative license. Even so, my goal was to highlight nail trends without going too wild – I really wanted to focus on what women would wear day to evening. Big love to essie for previously sending me their limited edition Fall into Fashion collection. I knew the moment I saw the gorgeous, muted jewel tones that they had to be featured! What a way to swatch the essie colors – onto models 🙂

DSC04307

First up is Amber, who wore essie Sew Psyched, a green gray blend that perfectly complimented her skin tone.  I have not been a fan of the green nail polish trend, but this color turned it around.  When we got to Cuvee, the location for the shoot, everyone was asking about “that pretty green”.  It is fall without being too dark, and is totally fresh.

essie_sewpsyched

essie’s Velvet Voyeur looked smashing on model Tiffany.  It enhanced her beautiful pale complexion, dark hair and eyes, and the metallic brocade dress.

That’s Kristin Lindemann, esthetician and makeup artist, creating an evening look.

Ugh. Bad lighting.  Wish you could see better how Heather rocked a fabulous mane of red hair, and essie’s neutral taupe Merino Cool.

Her nail polish was a perfect tie-in with the outfit and shoes.  Also? I want that bracelet.

I didn’t get a chance to photograph Anne, the model wearing CND Shellac (just named a top 5 fall trend by People Magazine!).  She wore Negligee.

Thanks to everyone that made this happen.  Look for the full layout and clothing/jewelry/credits in the September 26th issue of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Patrick Dempsey, Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Milwaukee for two days of shooting Transformer 3.  I hope they crush it.

shialabouf_mcdreamy_transformers3Yeah, you know what I mean.

mcdreamy_transformers3I was up at the crack of dawn for a client leaving for Europe that wanted glitter toes, but where was my call from McDreamy for his MANi/pedi?  I waited.

bumblebee_shialebouf_milwaukeeBumbleBee on the downlo!

Food Wars in Milwaukee: AJ Bombers vs Sobelman’s

May is Burger Month and Milwaukee is celebrating big time. Thursday, May 6th begins the first of 3 days of filming by Food Network’s Food Wars, which is set to declare the best burger in Milwaukee.
foodwars
Last May I posted on my favorite burger joints , making note of the peanut butter and bacon burger as a first and all time favorite from The Bear in Chico, Ca. If you look at recommendations that came in from readers, Sobleman’s made the short list, but AJ Bombers? Nowhere to be found.

This could be because AJ had just opened in March of 2009 at the corner of Knapp & Water. The brainchild of Joe and Angela Sorge (she was a Brew City Beauty) , AJ Bombers was something fresh and new. From the p-nut bombs to the unique and flavorful food, it offered a new school menu the city needed.

p-nut bombs

Sobelman’s has long enjoyed a history as a city favorite, and that could be the reason Food Wars came visiting to consider an episode.  For whatever reason, they passed that first time.  Sobelman was determined to be on the show, and in a recent interview said he contacted Joe Sorge to get a battle going.

He picked the right battle. AJ Bombers, strong with a tech savvy crowd, launched a social media campaign to get the network’s attention and Food Wars agreed to take them on.  Who will win the war though?  My bet is on AJ Bombers. They’ve got the whole package.  Somehow a peanut butter burger made it onto their menu in the last year too – hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Professional Beauty Association and Barbicide® Launch H1N1 Preparedness Toolkit

barbicide_salon

Worried about how to fight off H1N1 this season?  The Professional Beauty Association and Barbicide® have created an online toolkit that addresses concerns for salon/spa owners but can be used by the general public as well.

Barbicide is the #1 disinfecting cleaning solution on the market.  The trademark blue liquid + kills HIV-1, Tuberculosis and is also effective against H1N1.  While the iconic jar is most often associated with disinfecting combs for barbershop, the powerful liquid is now used in many forms, including wet wipe applications.

“We have seen an increased demand for H1N1 resources and information from salon/spa owners across the country,” said Steve Sleeper, Executive Director of the Professional Beauty Association. Said Alan Murphy, President of King Research,  “Our contagious disease experts and in-house researchers are key contributors to the tools and programs King Research has launched and we want to share that information with the beauty industry.

Pro Beauty Association kicks off the H1N1 Preparedness Campaign on Thursday, November 11 with this online toolkit that includes a Business Pandemic Influenza Planning Checklist, FAQ on H1N1, Recognizing the differences in types of flu and Tips to Prepare.  Both organizations are planning future webinars and workshops.

Brew City Beauty: Anne Munkwitz of FitMilwaukee.com pt 1

Gorgeous people – Milwaukee is full of them! I’ll be highlighting a Brew City Beauty each month in this new feature. Our first time out of the gate features a double whammy: Anne Munkwitz and Tracey Gessner have formed FitMilwaukee, an online resource for helping Milwaukee stay active. Part 1 focuses on Milwaukee native Anne, who has spent the last year transforming her pretty self from a size 12/14 to a size 2/4. Along with her outer beauty, she has a killer comedic sense she uses to keep everyone entertained. Read this quick Q&A to find out what makes her tick and how she stays beautiful in Milwaukee.

ANNE MUNKWITZ @bananza

Were you born and raised in Wisconsin? How long have you been in the Milwaukee area?

I have lived in the Milwaukee area my whole life.

What do you do?

I do Product Development for Diamond Nexus Labs, a Franklin-based company that specializes in lab-created precious gemstone jewelry. I basically get to play with all the pretty, shiny stuff. It’s fun!

Marital Status?

Not married, but madly in love with my significant other!

What does Milwaukee mean to you?

I like to think of Milwaukee as “Smallwaukee”. It has the small town feel with all the benefits of the big city. It’s no NYC but I think people are surprised when they see how fun and hip the city really is. I love the community spirit here. There is an amazing wealth of young, talented entrepreneurs and professionals that make things happen here. Oh, and everywhere I go is filled with beautiful people.

What does beauty mean to you?

I think beauty is an attitude. It’s about being happy. I try to smile as much as I can and laugh and share joy and compliments with others.

Discuss how FitMilwaukee.com came into play and your role?

anne_marathonFitMilwaukee started because Tracey (Gessner) and I wanted a way to focus on fitness within Milwaukee specifically. We share a lot of our fitness ideas and workouts on Twitter, and people are always interested in what we’re doing and how. They are inspired by our stories. FitMilwaukee is a place to motivate each other to keep up the good work, and highlight ways of doing that specifically in our city.

What makes you feel beautiful?
bef-aft
To me it’s all about confidence. I lost a significant amount of weight this year and gained loads of confidence. It was about my physical appearance as well as in my knowledge that I can do whatever I set my mind to (I ran my first marathon!). With my new attitude I have been more social and outgoing, met new people, and taken on new challenges that I never thought possible. I definitely feel confident and beautiful because of that.

Name a favorite Milwaukee spot?

I love being outdoors in the summertime, specifically along the Oak Leaf Trail. Starting out at South Shore park and all the way down into St Francis, Cudahy, South Milwaukee… it just feels good to be out in the fresh air near our gorgeous lakefront.

Where do you get beautified in MKE?

I get facials at Actaea in Bay View. I see Susan, and she’s amazing and gentle and the products she uses and recommends have really helped my skin. I have my hair done by Beth at Legacy Salon and DaySpa in Hales Corners — she does my sister’s hair too, and it always turns out amazing! And for manis and pedis I go to Nail Spa on Layton Ave. It’s cheap and they always take good care of me!

~~~
Congrats on all of your hard work paying off Anne!  Question or comment for her? You can leave it here in the comments, and don’t forget to visit www.FitMilwaukee.com
