Empower Nail Art at ISSE – new!

Are you heading to the professional only ISSE Long Beach show? If you are, you’ll be one of the first to be able to check out Empower Nail Art, a new polymer-film nail coating by creator Lucien Henderson. This unique wrap allows full creativity for the nail tech by providing templates to cut to desired shape, or of course free hand at will. Have you ever had difficulty getting a good fit on certain nails? Empower Nail Art’s 7″ x 3″ format ensures you can cut to size, either for the difficult natural nail, or if you want to customize, say, a stiletto nail.

How it came about:

Nearly a year of research resulted in a product which seeks to fundamentally change the way films are used in nail art. After leaving Minx Nails last March, Lucien Henderson searched the marketplace for a product which answered the challenges of pre-cut nail wraps. Pre-designed and pre-cut appliques had too many limitations and a flexible film that unleashed creativity is what was needed, Lucien believed. Empower Nail art’s unique material and production methods may answer that challenge.

The above abstract designs look like there is a rendering issue with the pdf and probably not the actual design. The pricing is pretty sweet, and claims up to 25% more usable materials with no left over sizes. The Premiere Collection of 20 prints launches in March on EmpowerNailArt.com .

I’ll be getting a preview batch of Empower Nail Art and I can’t wait to test them out and share with you here. Check back for the ISSE booth number.

2012 Kickoff – Beauty Giveaway from Julep Maven

A new year is 365 days of new opportunities, and I have something that can help you through that time. The beauty mavens over at Julep are offering an exclusive discount and giveaway for you!

Julep is a boutique nail salon that carries their own line of polishes and products.  There are four locations in the Pacific Northwest – Seattle area, to be specific.  While each location offers unique membership pampering packages in addition to appointment/walk-in services, living in the area is only a plus.  Through the Julep Maven program, you can experience Julep by getting a sneak peek to the sets sent out to top beauty editors across the US every month. You’ll be sent first looks at color, plus sample top products.

Quick Review:

Julep sent me a Maven bag to test drive and of the items I received in my Maven bag is the Julep Glycolic Hand Scrub – a full 3 ounce bottle. I love this product because it does double duty as a cleanser and left a silky, exfoliated feel to my hands.  It is a great size for travel, and you can even use this for your face.  Shake this puppy up very well so that the ingredients are mixed before you try to squeeze any out. Proper exfoliation leads to better absorption of your beauty products that benefit your skin, so it is an important step.

Julep’s nail polishes come in a very unique bottle reminiscent of  Tom Ford’s Black Orchid .  Pretty and tapered, there are loads of colors to choose from in this collection.  Would you like to try a few of them?  The Maven program ensures you’ll get 12 months of Julep nail products for only $19.99 a month.

Julep is offering Solessence readers two additional ways to experience the brand!

1. Get Your Own Maven Box: Go to Julep.com, order your own Maven Box and type in Solessence at checkout. You’ll get your first box for only $5!  The Maven boxes are valued at $40 and available for a subscription price of $19.99 a month.  As a Solessence reader you’re saving almost $15 off the the already discounted subscription price.  Go for it!

2. Win Your Own 3 month Maven Subscription: Julep is generously offering Solessence readers a chance to win and 3 months of Maven Boxes (product value $120, subscription value ~ $60)!  Here is how you can kickoff 2012 as a Julep Maven –

  1. Go to Julep.com and take the style quiz.  This is the same quiz beauty editors across the US have taken to find out what Julep colors and hues they will most likely swoon over.  You need to know, you know?
  2. Come back here to this post on Solessence.com and in the comments, post your style.  It will be fun to see the trends!
  3. I’m on a little hiatus, so in two weeks I’ll be back to pull a winner at random and announce it.  Don’t worry, I’ll be checking in check out your styles.  You must include your real name and a working email.

For extra entries:

Twitter: Post this tweet: I’ve got (your style) style with @solessence & @julepmaven http://bit.ly/u3xzqh #nails

Facebook: Add yourself to the Solessence Fan Page and post  I’ve got (your style) style with @solessence & @julepmaven http://bit.ly/u3xzqh

Swatches: CND Colours & Effects – Primaries, Secondaries, Chromes

CND has a pretty fabulous line of lacquers called Colours & Effects.  Quick to dry (these are the same nail polishes used at Fashion Week) the colors are strong.  The best part about this system is the ease it gives the nail artist.

PRIMARIES

Bicycle Yellow

Relay Red

Anchor Blue

Did you know that color is proprietary?  When mixing paints or polishes, companies have their Pantone combinations registered.  Now, take that same combo and move it a digit or two.  Voila!  Legally, you have a new color. This is why there are so many near dupes/repeats on the market.

SECONDARIES

Electric Orange

Green Scene

Eclectic Purple

CND’s Colours & Effects creates a new game by providing 50 creme shades (Colours) and 15 accents (Effects) of shimmer, pearl and sparkle that can be paired to create nearly 900 colors. The only extra sets to come out are special partnerships, like the Jason Wu collection, or one hot trend per season. The Limited Editions are made as must-haves.

CHROMES

Gold Chrome

Copper Chrome

Silver Chrome

I’ve swatched the first main categories of Primaries, Secondaries and Chromes. If you haven’t tried this brand out you don’t know what you are missing! Check back for the complete swatch set of 50 cremes and 15 effects.

CND Shellac: Summary

Milwaukee/Mequon/Shorewood area: Make your appointment now for this 14-day manicure online or call (414) 964-9311
How do you get great nails?  Shellac is the answer.   Here is a little FAQ I wrote for About.com that I hope will answer many of your questions on the product.  Check it out here, as well as swatch posts here and a video here!  And scroll down to see supporting photos of product under weeks of wear and tear.

A Shellac manicure is the easiest way to give natural nails the beautiful, finished look of gel or liquid & powder without going artificial.

For the last 5 weeks I’ve put it to the test on clients and on the most notorious nail polish abusers known: the stylists at Harpo’s Salon in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.   After exposure to water, hair dye, gardening (yes) and cuticle biting, Shellac stayed strong, shiny, and kept the nail beds healthy.

The difference is clear: An example of nail condition after gel and nail condition after Shellac

Before Shellac, Harpo’s owner Peggy Dixon was only able to keep a polish manicure nice for four hours.  Here are her hands after 3 weeks of Shellac!

essie thinks FUN! for summer 2010

Get Nailed – Wisconsin’s First Nail Competition (and mine)

amybecker_usinvitationalgelnail

Wisconsin’s Amy Becker will be judging the 1st Nail Show & Nail Competition.

So it’s 5:01am and I’ve been up for a couple of hours now.  True, I do need to go in early today, but in a couple of days I’ll be participating in my first nail competition and I’m just re-reading the rules and trying to envision the day while the tea brews and the laundry tumbles dry.  A month or so ago, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as nail competitions, but it completely makes sense.  Working with nails is truly an art, a skill, and with so many techniques and hours of training put into form (and function) it helps to have mentors and to continually challenge yourself.  Education is a key factor for competitions, but the thought is still a tad daunting.  As intrigued as I was at the idea, I’ve tried to back out for weeks now.  Unfortunately, or fortunately for me, someone stepped up to the plate to serve as my nail model.

I met Tonya when I was looking for someone to practice new techniques on, and she became a client shortly after.  Working on her is always fun because she has great patience, is willing to try pretty much anything, and just seems to be there in the moment with me.  When she was getting a fill done, a co-worker walked by and noticed Tonya’s long fingers and said, “You should be her model for the competition.”  Tonya jumped at the idea and wanted to know everything about the event.  After that I had no way out.

Latest set of competition practice nailscompetitionnails_profile2

The Nail Show & Nail Competition will be held Monday, May 10th at:

  • Sheraton Brookfield
  • 375 S Moorland Road
  • Brookfield, WI  53005
  • General Admission $35 (gift bags included)

This is the first nail competition held in Wisconsin since the 1990’s, and has great sponsors and demo areas.  Wisconsin’s Amy Becker, a Top 25 Competitor and Nail Magazine “Nail Technician of the Year” recipient will be judging the events. Amy recently won 1st place in the US Invitational Gel Nail division at the International Beauty Show in Las Vegas.

If you are a nail tech  and would like to enter, you may still come Monday morning to register – you need to be a part of this!

If you have an interest in nails, or are a nail tech that doesn’t want to compete but is looking to keep up on the latest, come to the demo/show area.  Please spread the word as this is an initial effort to build skills and mentors in nails for the midwest.

Show Schedule:

8:30 am Registration

9:00am Competition Opens

Multi Media Art and Flat art submitted

9:30am All Art Entries Closed

Competition Briefing

9:45am Competition Begins

11:15am Competition Ends

3:30pm Award Presentation

4:00pm Show Closes

9:00am-4:00pm Demonstration Area Open

Where to Get CND Shellac in Milwaukee – First Day

You can book your Shellac service with me in the Milwaukee area online at Schedulicity 2317 E Capitol Drive, Shorewood, WI or call 414-964-9311

Our CND Shellac Salon Pack arrived today and was quickly, easily, set up for display. Only six colors ship with the pack and we have the others on back order. Behold:

Very first Shellac – Negligee (two coats)

One coat of Negligee

Red Baroness

For CNDers using Brisa, the bottle shapes look similar, but Shellac is only .25 fluid ounces (7.3 ml).  This is not a trial size, this is the actual product size.  FAQs state you can get 20 applications out of the top and color bases.  With four clients the first day, you can see how quickly you could run through this.

The colors are rich and beautiful.  The consistency is of thick polish, but easy to apply.  There are definite tricks to application,  though the product tends to be very easy to work and modify. There is no building with this product, but it can be used over acrylic/gels.

More on colors tomorrow.  Did you have a specific question on the product? Let me know.

L’Oreal adds Essie Polish to the Lineup

One darling of New York gets consumed by another.

essie

While breezing through Target the other day, I mused on the ever expanding line of “exclusive” and “prestige” items going mainstream.  That this is a sore subject for salons and spas, and a source of confusion created by massclusivity should be another post.  Those two items rotated through my head though, as I spied Essie lacquers on the shelves.

Some of you may be asking – Essie who?  On one hand, my heart breaks that you have not experienced this lush, long lasting brand that made light pink iconic (Ballet Slippers, anyone?) as well as a more beautiful version of Chanel’s Particuliere, Mink Muffs, of which I could take gallons and gallons of the stuff.  On the other, think of the joy you will soon experience at discovering a great brand.  For years, Essie has been an East Coast favorite for stylists.  As little known as the brand seemed to be beyond those borders, Essie pulled in $28 million dollars in net sales over the last 12 months.  Not shabby for finger paints. Long lasting, chip resistant, beautifully colored polishes.

Established in 1981, Astoria based Essie moved beyond the easily accessible Duane Reade in New York to Trade Secrets in cities like Milwaukee.  But an appearance in Target in middle America?  All of that was explained away with the announcement L’Oreal had snapped up this boutique-ish brand to go manicure mainstream.  Essie will bring to L’Oreal a very serious and cult favorite brand, giving them a lead in the drugstore market.  What are the chances the formulations will change?  The sale is to finalize in the next 60-90 days.  Only time will only tell.

Are you a salon/spa carrying Essie?  Does this impact whether you will use the line in your services?  OPI is a brand that has survived having sales channels in supermarkets and is still considered a top line.  If it is sitting next to Clearsil and still in demand, is the though of salon only old school?  Does being salon exclusive matter anymore?

Update on the Sunflower Nail Dust Remover

sunflowerMy Sunflower came in! It is a thing of beauty and works so well at keeping gel dust and odors away. I am in love.

This also works for natural, but I had some difficulty getting acrylic to pull up. Mostly, it was too heavy and dropped to the table.  I was not using a carbide bit and that may have made a difference.

The link to the original post is here and mentions where you can buy from the manufacturer.

Tricks of the Trade: OPI TOOLing Revamped in Rainbow Titanium

OPI’s wonderful nail tech (manicure and pedicure) tool line gets a pretty upgrade.

To see an updated review of the full rainbow titanium wallet click here

I recently mentioned the love of my favorite cuticle pusher from OPI’s TOOLing line, but they’ve gone and made the entire line even better.  The form has not changed, but the metal has been upgraded to titanium, meaning an extremely strong and long lasting implement.  Titanium is usually an attractive gray, but OPI took it an extra step and anodized, creating a rainbow effect:

DSC03892

Holy glitter & unicorns, is this stuff pretty.  I’ve gone through a dizzying array of nippers, and in a work environment the cuticle nipper can get used for clipping things that should not be clipped!  With my rainbow titanium AccuNip, it is clear this pair is hands off and for cuticles only.

I know this particular tool looks somewhat unwieldy, compared to all of the small, sleek nippers out there.  I can tell you this is not the case. The titanium is very light, the nippers very sharp, and it is actually quite ergonomic and easy to control.  All of the things you want in a nipper.

The entire TOOLing set is available in rainbow in the OPI Wallet.  Very professional, if a tad blinding.

Check OPI or your local distributor to purchase.

Note: Anodized titanium is a surface treatment created by oxidization.  It will not fade, but does scratch.  If this happens, it is possible to re-treat by a metalsmith or jeweler, but I don’t have any ballpark on cost. Also, OPI’s sharpening services continue with this version – $9.95 to maintain precision.

Nail Polish Mixing Pots: Custom – The New Color?

frankenjuggs

Got word on Friday from Chicago’s matte nail designer, Marc Paez of Manglaze, of their latest release.

Franken Steins (aka Franken Juggs) are a wide mouth jar used to mix and blend custom nail polish colors.  The wide mouth makes it easy to add, and there is a brush attached to the cap.   I think this could also work for mixing custom glitter colors and gel or acrylics.

These are the same jars he used to mix the custom colors for Gareth Pugh’s Paris Fashion Week show. You know, the guy they suggested might reign supreme after Alexander McQueen’s untimely departure?  Kind of a big deal.

manglaze_matte2

As per their style, the bottles are adorned with fantastical artwork, this by Tegan Coddington.   Whether it is your style or not, it is hard to deny that talent.

The items are up on the website now.

CND’s Shellac Hybrid Nail Color

Looking for information on Shellac? These posts might interest you: Swatches , FAQ link , 27 Days of Shellac , Removal

Wondering if a 14-day no chip mani w/10 minute removal is right for you?

CND unleashed one of the big industry buzzes at America’s Beauty Show in Chicago. Shellac, what CND calls their “hybrid nail color” brushes on like a polish, wears chip free for two weeks like a gel and comes off in 10 minutes.
shellac_solessence

As always, CND packaging is slick. At first glance a few common questions are asked:

    • How does this differ from OPI Axxium?
    • How does this differ from a soak-able gel?

Shellac is brush on, and comes packaged just like nail polish. The product is only promoted to have a 2 week wear time, surely to account for nail growth.  It doesn’t require bonder or buffing of the nail.   In this way, it doesn’t seem too different from Axxium or a gel like Bio-Sculpture or Calgel.  And because it is a hybrid, it has the flexibility of a gel but does not provide additional strength, like a polish.

The soak off procedure seems to be the biggest deal. Whereas most brands have a between the lines “10 minutes for every layer applied” CND promises Shellac is a 10 minute soak off in their special nail jackets, with any remaining polish flaked off via orangewood stick. Not bad. Customers were finding themselves in Acetone bowls for 20 – 45 minutes, sometimes having had the first layers of their colors drilled off to speed times. That is gone with this brand.

Here is what to expect during service:

step_1_shellacApply one layer of Shellac base coat to each nail/extension and cure under UV lamp

step_2_shellacApply two layers of Shellac UV Color Coat, cure under UV lamp

step_3_shellacApply one layer of Shellac UV Top Coat

step_4_shellacCure under UV lamp. Clean, apply cuticle oil.

step_5_shellacRemove with Shellac Wrap.  10 minutes w/acetone, twist off, flake off, voila!

  • How do I get this as a consumer or nail tech?

Nail Professionals: CND offers a very competitive package, with decals announcing the salon is a Shellac service provider. Demand has been very high since release, and CND reports sales have been 3 to 4 times initial production.  You should contact your local distributor to find out their order status and see if there is a wait list you can get placed on.

Consumers interested in the Shellac manicure should talk to their salons!

There are currently 12 shades available and the line is hypo-allergenic without formaldehyde, toluene or DBP.

It’s official – We’ll be offering Shellac from the first wave of shipments.  Make your appointment now for this 14-day manicure online

Dove’s “Real Women Get Red Carpet Ready” Party

rcrA couple of weeks ago I hosted a “Real Women Get Red Carpet Ready” party, sponsored by Dove to get word out about the new Ultimate Visibly Smooth.  It was a blast!  There was a beautiful spread of Mediterranean foods, sushi and salmon, fruits, sparkling waters, sodas.

solessence_doveredcarpet_1And by me, I mean we, the amazing women I work with.  Peggy and the stylists that stayed to show their stuff rocked the night.

A second big shout out goes to the women that attended.  Real women.  Beautiful women.  Busy moms by day, they also share a passion for – oh, I won’t spoil it – you’ll have to watch the video.  But a great time was had by all.  The girls got their hair and nails did, the swag supplied was useful and loved (you’ll see).

The festivities were all captured on Flip supplied by Dove.

How real can you get?  These women were not afraid to be on camera sans makeup and hair done.  Comfortable beauty.

Thank you ladies and thank you Dove!

Nail Trend: Glitter Toes

Glitter Toes: Who Wears Them? What Are They? Where Can I Get Some?
While April showers would have us think otherwise, sunny days are here again, at least intermittently, and feet everywhere are looking to come out of hiding. While this means pedicure – stat! – there are other ways to bring sunshine into your life via toes: Glitter Toes.

nora_march282010

That’s G-L-I-T-T-E-R!

Who Wears Them?
Glitter Toes are for everyone.   Most recently I’ve done a “Something Blue” set of toes for a bride-to-be, created a blueberry/green holographic for a woman leaving to intern in Nicaragua for a month, created a matching hand & foot pink gradient fade for a doctor’s wife vacationing in Europe, and created white gold toes on for a conference speaker.  This is a popular option for people in professions where a more overall conservative look is needed during the week (my multitude of attorney clientele) but the client likes to have fun once they kick off their heels. Glitter toes are also popular options for children as they are durable and last during most vacations. My youngest clients start at 5 years old and go up from there – it is that trouble free.

What Are They?
Glitter Toes are glitter embedded into gel. It is a simple 30-60 minute procedure (depending on glitter & pedi selection) layering glitter onto the nails, ending with a super smooth and shiny top coat. There is some cuticle cleanup and nail shaping in this procedure, but if your feet are really in need of TLC, a pedicure should be scheduled a week or so prior. Pedicures can be performed same day after  Glitter Toes but not before, because the water will cause the nail to swell, interfering with adhesion. It is best to maintain the look with daily application of cuticle oil or lotion to help keep nail bed hydrated.

Once your final layer is cured, you are ready to go. There is no additional dry time. The product lasts 3-5 weeks. It can actually grow out with the toes, but it is best to schedule removal. However, the look is so affordable and fun, you will probably find yourself selecting new colors and styles instead of going bare!

glittertoes

The owner of these toes exclaimed, “It’s like jewelry for your feet!”

Where Can I Get Some?

In the Milwaukee/Whitefish Bay/Mequon/Shorewood area:

2317 E Capitol Drive, Shorewood WI

A multitude of colors and embeds are available.  I’ve done gradient art with multiple color (I sported a gradient black/pink/purple for Karen Rabinovitz’s HSN launch) to match mood or event.  Give it a try!

Bonus Round: How does this differ from a glitter polish?

There are great glitter polishes out there (China Glaze’s limited release Ruby Pumps is one of my fav) but there are distinct differences between the types:

Glitter Polish

  • Not meant for long term wear
  • Prone to chip, crack, peel
  • Limited color selection

Glitter Toe Gels

  • Long term adhesion perfect for low maintenance, vacation mode
  • Rarely chips, cracks or peels
  • Unlimited color – can make custom colors on the spot
  • Multi-dimensional color that is highly pigmented
  • Super shine top gloss

Glitter Toe gels give a high end look to your digits, I really can’t explain it otherwise.  You also can’t beat the durability.

Day Spa Magazine Features Waterless Manicure – April 2010

One of the highlights was stopping by the trade magazine booths, where the April issue of Day Spa Magazine was being given out. There, on page 14, is a feature on eco-friendly spa services, and my waterless manicure is given a big mention:

You Need This: The Fuffy and The Sunflower

It’s always the little things that count, and when doing nails, it doesn’t get much smaller than nail dust. Filing leaves minuscule particles that float in the air as well as tuck into the sidewall/cuticle area.  An even greater issue is the often unspoken occupational hazard.  When filing nails, client’s arms are usually extended out and visits are every 3 weeks or more.  Compare this to the nail technician, who has a 2 foot space between hands and face, and multiple clients a day.  If dust is not handled, sinus issues or worse can become a reality.

Here are two tools that help remedy each problem:

OPI The Fluffy
opi_thefluffy When nail dust lands in the cuticle area it can ruin the manicure or nail enhancement service by adhering back onto the nail surface. The result will be a less than smooth appearance.

OPI’s The Fluffy is an effective tool in that it brushes across the entire surface of the nail and can reach down sidewalls to remove buildup. It also pulls apart for easy cleaning and sanitizing. Last but not least, it is very soft, and my clients often comment on how they like the feeling as opposed to a bristle brush.

Flower Power – The Sunflower

sunflower_dustremover BAUUSA manufactures the Sunflower, a highly powered intake fan that pulls up dust and odors as you work.  It also comes with a 20w bulb on the latest version, providing light as well as air purity.

We’ll explore other options in upcoming posts, but I like the Sunflower because it works directly overhead and is quite powerful.  Possible cons?  Watch the accidental knock or like a bad DustBuster you could have all of your work regurgitated. (Watch the video update here)

Get a Pedicure – Save an Airport

stinkyfeetNew security measures at Palm Beach International Airport have left workers holding their noses.  It seems the requirement for passengers to remove shoes before searches meant tired, smelly feet residue permeating the security area carpet – enough to require new carpeting or tiling of the area.

If you think about it, it makes absolute sense.  Feet take a beating, especially during winter travel.  They can remain in shoes for long periods of time, and there is more dead skin buildup because people hide them in socks and closed toed shoes/boots.  This leads to a great combination for bacterial growth and the unpleasant smells that can emit when finally getting around to taking the shoes off.

What can you do if this problem plagues you?

Pedicures play a very important part in hygiene.  The feet are a difficult area to reach for cleansing, and counting on soap dribbling down your legs during a shower won’t cut it for long term maintenance.  A good pedicure will including a strong buffing of your heels and other dry areas to remove dead skin, a sanitizing soak, and clipping of nails.  Extra benefits will be massage, mask and scrub that all help with exfoliation and encourages circulation of your stems.

Other long touted ways to avoid foot odor include wearing correct fitting shoes made from natural materials, wearing socks that wick sweat, and always alternating shoes to give them a day to “breath” and regain freshness.

What if you’ve tried these methods and they aren’t working?  For a small percentage, chronic foot odor is a serious problem that is exacerbated by body chemistry.   Here’s a little tip: Try a deodorant / antiperspirant – on your feet. In the same way it works to block odor from your underarms, it can create a shield to help keep your feet smelling fresh throughout the day.

Tricks of the Trade: Young Nails Magic Wand

After my OPI Pusherguard Cuticle Pusher disappeared (some blame it on the ghost at work – more on that later) I was hard pressed to find another tool that would so gently push and clean the nail.  The OPI tool also has a patent pending design, so I knew finding another implement that would do both at the same time was out of the question.

As I prepared to repurchase, I came across an implement that promised to push, clean and help create a perfect C curve.  Could it really do all of that?

Multifunctional Pinch TweezerAs you can see, this is a three headed beast.  I’m not sure which version came first, but here is how it works:

  • The spoonish side gently pushes back cuticle
  • Turn it to the teardrop side to scrape any protein buildup on nails
  • Use the pinchers to tighten up your gel/acrylic application at the apex after a flash cure for better C curves.  You can also use it to hold tips to nail while they are drying to avoid getting stuck to your client.  I prefer to sculpt so I haven’t tested this out.

This model is available from several different companies, including Young Nails.  Although I wish it had the OPI push/scraper combo in one (the scraper on this is a little scary looking), I think it is an excellent tool for the nail care professional.  I generally can get a good C curve with my forms, but it looks really nice after a quick pinch with this tool. Also, I know drilling is the way to go, but I feel better having a manual push/scraper on hand.

Have you tried this tool?  What did you think?

Polished NYFW: Zoya for Peter Som

Zoya_Nail_Polish_PeterSom_NYFW_totallook_editorialuseonly10NYFW: Peter Som – Fall 2010
PRODUCTS USED: Zoya Remove+, Zoya Anchor Basecoat, Zoya Nail Charity, Zoya Armor Topcoat.

Nail Care Sponsor: Zoya Nail Polish

Using muted color, layers, and printed fabrics the chaotic yet controlled vision of Peter Som for Fall 2010 was refreshing to say the least. The added touch of Swarovski crystals enriched this diverse collection even more.

Zoya_Charity_webManicurist Jackie Saulsbery prepped each set of nails using Zoya Remove + and Anchor prior to polishing with the muted mauve Charity and finishing with a topcoat of Armor. The look complimented the bruised makeup (black plum lips!) and overall moody black palette of the show.

In Attendance: Mary Alice Stephenson, Stephen Kolb (CFDA) Joanna Hillman (Bazaar), Hamish Bowles; Virginia Smith (European Vogue), Olof Erlandsson, Amanda Hearst, Teresa Palmer, Bryanboy, Charlotte Dellal, Beth Buccini

MBFW – f/w 2010 – Ruffian

You’ve gotta forgive me, I’m a little slow on the draw right now.   Fashion Week is in full swing, last time at the tents.  Too many changes going on to attend, but there are some exciting bright spots.  The nails at Ruffian, by CND, were gorgeous!  Matte over blue over foil.

Modelruffian_gThose stockings are oh-so-familiar.  Love/Hate.

WWPD? – Pop17’s Sarah Austin

The WWPD (What Would Pros Do) segment gets in your face to find out what is on the faces of people who are on-camera for their profession. If the makeup is good enough for them, it is good enough for us!

“Hot and Not” video –  Polished, fresh, capped off with perfect nails

sarah_austin_pop17

Let’s talk about those fabulous nails! Are they real?

They are real. I have natural thick, long and strong nails.

Do you do your own nails or go to a salon?  What is your typical routine?

I go to a salon. My typical manicure is french with glitter. I only get the soft rainbow glitter or soft pink glitter. I only get silver or gold glitter on top if I’m going to Las Vegas.

SarahAustin

What are your favorite products/colors?

I like OPI the most. Light pink and fire engine red.

What is the look in your “Hot and Not” video?

My hot and not video look is going for that natural roll out of bed look, but in reality it took me a couple hours to achieve. It’s neat and natural. My make up is done by an artist at Benefit and my hair is done by the best stylist, Brooke, at DiPierto Todd salon in Mill Valley, CA.

The secret to great nails?

The secret to great nails is always carrying a nail file in your purse and filing them every day.

You Need This: The Manicure Claw

There is nothing sadder than a manicurist with really rotten looking nails. Even if you do your own nails at home, there still comes a time when you’ve got some freshly painted digits you dig, that just end up messed up when reaching for the remover.

That’s why I am so excited to share this gem!
asp_manicurecottonclaw

The Cotton Claw is sold through Sally Beauty and can be picked up in-store or online. It is a pen like device that grabs the cotton, making it easy to dip into nail polish remover and then run over fingernails.

The Cotton Claw
manicureclawinaction

When used, you can avoid contact with remover soaked cotton. It is vastly superior to the “cotton between the pointer and middle finger” method (think slipping cotton, acetone soaked forearms). At well under $5 it is a total steal.

This was being used around the school and one doll of a classmate gave one to me for graduation. If you do nails and want yours to stay as nice looking as your clients, pick this up.

Green is hot right now, so this nail is in hommage to everything ’70s – Avocado paint, metallic striping, and an updated version of the Cadillac Coup deVille via Snoop Doggy Dog.

I’ve got this look on my ring finger right now, with the solid green on the other nails.
