CND Shellac: Summary

Milwaukee/Mequon/Shorewood area: Make your appointment now for this 14-day manicure online or call (414) 964-9311
How do you get great nails?  Shellac is the answer.   Here is a little FAQ I wrote for About.com that I hope will answer many of your questions on the product.  Check it out here, as well as swatch posts here and a video here!  And scroll down to see supporting photos of product under weeks of wear and tear.

A Shellac manicure is the easiest way to give natural nails the beautiful, finished look of gel or liquid & powder without going artificial.

For the last 5 weeks I’ve put it to the test on clients and on the most notorious nail polish abusers known: the stylists at Harpo’s Salon in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.   After exposure to water, hair dye, gardening (yes) and cuticle biting, Shellac stayed strong, shiny, and kept the nail beds healthy.

The difference is clear: An example of nail condition after gel and nail condition after Shellac

Before Shellac, Harpo’s owner Peggy Dixon was only able to keep a polish manicure nice for four hours.  Here are her hands after 3 weeks of Shellac!

Master Cleanse, Day 8

Eyein’ up a tall drink of lemon water

lemonadeLast Sunday night I embarked on the Lemonade Diet (aka Master Cleanse), a routine of 60 ounces of a lemonade concoction with additional diuretic teas and such to help you make it through the day. 7 days to 40 days, to be exact. Here is what I found:

  • The Cleanse will bring on hunger for everyone around you.

B.C. (Before Cleanse):
Me: Honey, can mommy make you something?
son: No thanks.
Me: You should eat something.
son: No. Thanks.
Me: Anything?
son: No.

D. C. (During Cleanse):
Breakfast: Mom, will you make me french toast?
Brunch: Mom, can we go to McDonalds?
Lunch: Mom will you make me pizza?
Snack: Mom, can I have the strawberries?
Dinner: Mom will you make me noodles?

  • The Cleanse is Doable if you don’t have a job:

Day 1: Everything okay? You look tired
Day 2: You look tired today. Are you tired?
Day 3: Are you dying? Seriously, are you dying?

  • Components of the Cleanse work, but will cramp your style.

I’m speaking primarily of the Salt flush.  You’ve got no food in you, so there is nothing to leave your system. Also, edema like swelling was making it impossible for me to wear shoes.

  • The Cleanse will make people question your sanity

Client 1: What is that in your glass? Lemons?
Me: Yes
Client 2: What is that in your glass? Iced tea?
Me: Yes
Haircutting client from across the room: What is that in your glass?
Me: eyeroll
Client 3: What is that in your glass? Is that…
Me: Yes
Client 3: You’re going to get crabby.

Indeed I did. I started moving and thinking in slow motion. Try doing meticulous work while under a citrus induced lethargy.  3pm on the daily was my time where it felt like I had to have some sustenance, so I folded and modified the cleanse.

I had the drinks in the morning and throughout the day and into the evening, but had something to eat to tide me over the afternoon lag. I also allowed myself a cup of coffee.

And I lost 5 pounds, even after eating a meal.

Now that was easier.

So far I’ve lost 16 pounds since March and I’ll be going into another week with the modified Master Cleanse to see what happens. I find the taste pleasant and, coupled with some actual nourishment, I can get along throughout the day just fine. Here is to another 7 days.

New Talika Lipocils Expert Creates Lushious Lashes

Luscious Lashes Made Memorable this Memorial Day Weekend via Sephora launch

talika_lipocils

Let me guess: The thought of having brow-brushing eyelashes is enticing, but you are put off by the many possible side effects associated with certain products?

I concur.  That’s why I was so excited when asked to try Talika Lipocils Expert, a triple run lash enhancer without any frightening science experiments.  Here is the good science:

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
- Sulfates
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Synthetic Dyes
- Petrochemicals
- Phthalates
- GMOs
- Triclosan

Research Results:
36% longer (up to 4.4mm)
+50% darker

+50% curl

Ideally, you would use a twice a day, 28 day course, then once a day for maintenance as Talika suggests.  I started the treatment back in March but was asked to hold off a review until May, because the product wasn’t actually launching until then.  Not a problem.

I have medium lashes, with a slight curl.  Not the worst, but not the best.  I’m kindof an ideal candidate.  Here’s what I found:

  • You don’t need a lot of product.  I have sensitivity to product in the eye area.  The directions call to use Lipocils Expert day and night. For the first week, I had a lot of tearing and irritation.  I chalk that up to too much product being used.  I was trying to get used to applying with the felt tip along with the mascara wand.  Obviously I was overdoing it, because once I minimized the amount of product I applied, that solved the problem.
  • My lashes responded almost immediately.  Another reason I felt I could cut back was that I could see a difference after that first week.  The difference is very clear when mascara is applied.  My lashes look as ginormous as they can get before going fake.
  • My lashes are already dark so I can’t really comment on the ability to darken eyelashes.
  • The curl factor is impressive. This is my favorite part!  I have to use an eyelash curler to get that wide-eyed look.  Lipocils Expert makes it so much easer.  I currently use DiorShow Iconic mascara, which aids in curling.  Lipocils Expert boosts the performance of my lashes AND the mascara, really giving me the most for my money.

The best thing is, all of this can be achieved without harmful side effects, no prescription.  And luckily for all of us, Talika Lipocils Expert has just released this weekend through Sephora.
