Rihanna in CND Shellac – over enhancements!

Rihanna in US Magazine, pictured with CND VIP manicurist Flavia Pitton

While she’s been a fan of CND Shellac from the get go, US Magazine recently featured Rihanna in Milan getting a Shellac Black Pool manicure on top of CND Retention+ liquid and powder set.

Yes, Shellac is for natural nails. But it is also for use over CND enhancements!  How many of you are doing this double duty mani?  I have a few gels that I Shellac over.  No tip wear is a big benefit, along with the standard long lasting, high shine and no-dry time we’ve all come to know and love!

She’s got the Look: Fekkai Stylist Adir Abergel for Kristen Stewart – Breaking Dawn

Twighlight Saga: Breaking Dawn fans – recreate Kristen Stewart’s hairstyle

INSPIRATION: An edgy, yet romantic look for the premiere of Twighlight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Adir was inspired to create an up-do that still felt like Kristen’s usual tousled and textured style with a touch of rockability

How To Get the Look: Fekkai stylist Adir Abergel created this braided look for Kristen Stewart’s  Twighlight Saga: Breaking Dawn appearance in Los Angeles and shares with Solessence readers how you can wear it to your own movie night:

  • Begin by applying Fekkai Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel to the roots of the hair to build texture
  • Apply Fekkai Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray throughout the rest of the hair and rough dry it to create a beachy and textured base for the up-do
  • Take random pieces and created standard braids, fishtail braids and twists throughout the hair in various sizes, leaving the very top of the hair loose.
  • Take all of the hair except for the loose hair at the top, and knotted and twisted it to create an up-do.
    • Adir used hairpins to create a very undone look.
  • To finalize the look,  backcomb the front of the hair to add volume, then push it back and pin it in place.
    • Adir secured the look by spraying the hair with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray.

Trying this at home? Send me your photos to upload 🙂

All products by Fekkai: Fekkai Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel($25), Fekkai Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray ($25), and Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray ($21).Available at Fekkai.com and Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

Breaking: Amy Winehouse found dead in home

They tried to make her go to rehab, again and again and again.

That beautiful, blowsy singer that killed it before anyone ever heard of Adele has died at age 27. Causes are “Unknown” although Amy’s drug addiction, disappearing frame and dental condition all point to the fact: Crack is Whack. She most recently had to cancel her European tour after appearing confused and forgetting her words onstage at a number of venues.

I debated posting these sad photos of where she let life lead her, but I think it is better to remember what really happened if it will help even one person from going down that road. A few years ago I saw several interviews with Amy’s anguished father. She had taken a tumble with her troublesome boyfriend and the parents were desperately trying to get her off of drugs. They claimed the boy was dragging her back down.

It wasn’t that this woman didn’t have help. She did. She had just gotten past the point of wanting it, and was surrounding herself with people on the same addictions. It’s a terrible place to be and to watch.
It’s a horrible loss of talent for the world, a void that allowed others to step in. Hoping for peace for her parents tonight.

Betrayed: Schwarzenegger reveals to Shriver he had illegitimate child…with the help!

Oh Ah-nold!  The sad news of the Schwarenegger/Shriver split now comes with a twist.  The former Governor of California revealed to his wife that he had been having an affair with a longtime family staff member who had recently retired – and had fathered her child.

I wanted to achieve my 20 years, then I asked to retire,” she said, adding she received a severance payment and “left on good terms with them.” – LA Timess

Shriver moved out of the family Brentwood home after finding this out directly from her husband.  Schwarzenegger stated this happened over 10 years ago, and the woman has never stepped forward to reveal his secret, choosing to say the child was hers from a previous marriage.  What is his reason for airing dirty laundry now?

Oddly enough, it appears Schwarzenegger sought office after he’d fathered this child.  He has supported the child all of these years, and that apparently didn’t slow him down either (remember the numerous “groping” complaints?)

He once claimed a key point to his success was “Marrying a Kennedy” but betraying one can’t be too good for your career either.

Update:  The mother is Mildred Baena (aka Patty) and the child is possibly as old as fourteen.  He absolutely looks like dad.

RIP Model Mia Amber Davis

With profound sorrow, at my sister Ida’s request, I am letting all of her friends know that her BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER MIA AMBER DAVIS passed away a short while ago!!! I know it’s unbelievable!!! We are all in shock!! Please keep my sister and our family in your prayer. ~ Carolyn Bishop Moore

Considered a favorite plus size model to many because of her stunning looks and genuine personality,  Mia Amber Davis’s death was announced today via the above message on her personal Facebook page.  Her birthday is listed as July 25, 1990 (but this cannot be correct).  No cause has yet been revealed. ***UPDATE: The cause is now thought to be related to knee surgery the model had the day before.  This was a common procedure and she was dealing with an old basketball injury from high school.  Mia experienced dizzyness and was taken to the hospital in Los Angeles by her cousin, where she died.  More updates as they happen.

Mia rose to fame as a 6′ tall plus size model, TV producer (Ricki Lake, The Next Food Network Star, Divorce Court), actress and editor for Plus Model Magazine, and often spoke to the “curvy” community on having positive self-esteem.  She was in Wisconsin last year in support of Strut Your Stuff.  She is survived by her husband.

Fans of Mia can leave a message on her Facebook Fan page

From Mia’s page:

Plus Model, Actor, Producer, Creative Editor for Plus Model Magazine.

Begining her career as an intern then production assistant for several television shows, such as “Ricki Lake”, “Showtime at the Apollo,” “Def Comedy Jam”, ” VH-1 Hard Rock Live” and many others, Mia soon became a producer at the nationally syndicated “Ricki Lake Show”. Mia also went on to produce several pilots and produce a dating show, “Change of Heart.” Most recently, Mia was the Senior Booking Producer for the Star Jones Show on Court TV.

While producing, an acting opportunity presented itself and Mia Amber burst onto the silver screen as “Rhonda” the full figured co-ed in the DreamWorks feature film “Road Trip”.

With the success of “Road Trip” Mia landed her first magazine cover (“Belle”) and Mia Amber realized that she wanted a coveted place in the world of plus sized modeling. Mia did her research, reinvented herself by losing 90 lbs. and was blessed with the opportunity to represent Ashley Stewart as a “Great Woman of Style.”

As a model Mia Amber has also worked with Richard Metzger, Monif C., Queen Latifah for Curvation, Abby Z., Lane Bryant and many many others. Mia has graced the covers and pages of numerous magazines and has appeared on countless television shows.

This past spring Mia was tapped to be the new Creative Editor-At-Large for Plus model magazine. Her first duty in her new role was to go toe to toe with the infamous Janice Dickinson on Oxygen’s, “Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.” Mia held her own knowing that she was standing up for the 62% of plus size women in the U.S.

Mia believes in stepping out on faith to realize her dreams and travels the country as a speaker at seminars for aspiring models.

Mia Amber is represented by the Goddess Division of Model Service Agency as well as the commercial division of Innovative Artists in New York.

She’s Got the Look: Katy Perry Wins People’s Choice Awards

Danilo created a beautiful classic body set on Katy, a style that “she always loves so much.” They decided on full waves to complement her strapless Betsey Johnson dress for a “sophisticated, cutie-pie” style for the evening.

Katy Perry wowed the audience, and clearly the people, winning two People’ Choice Awards (Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Online Sensation) and major style points in a dress by Betsey Johnson and hair styled by Pantene Celebrity Stylist Danilo.

Danilo shares the steps he used on Katy Perry with Solessence readers so you can duplicate at home:

  • Katy arrived on the scene with freshly washed, towel-dried hair so Danilo had a clean base for styling.
  • He first lightly misted her hair with the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Heat Protection & Shine Spray to wet and condition, then focused on prepping her roots for the voluminous style by spraying them with the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Root Lifter Spray Gel.
  •  Danilo then blew her hair out and, once dried, rubbed a small dollop of the Pantene Pro-V Restore Beautiful Lengths Smoothing Balm section-by-section before he applied heat from the curling iron.
  • He used a medium-sized curling iron to set each section and sprayed the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Professional Level Style Shaping Hairspray over the set before letting it cool for five minutes.
  • He then released her hair, brushed it gently, and “let her hair fall very full and wavy.”
  • He parted her hair to the side with lift in the front, and left her remaining curls big and loose for the final finish.

Linday Lohan: Ninety Day Nails

Lindsay Lohan sported some *expletive* nails in court, a big Eff U to the judge, or some absent-minded doodling perhaps?  An interesting contrast atop the pastel paint (Minx? Does anyone know?).   Whatever the reason, the judge handed her the same message back in the terms of a 90-day sentence.  Jail time for Mean Girls?  Kids, don’t let this happen to you.

Angelina Jolie – New Hair

cindycrawford_sydcurry copy

The revival of big blocks of chunky highlights (think young Cindy Crawford hair, ala Syd Curry) shown at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2010 has arrived early.

angelina-jolie-newhairAngelina Jolie was spotted with the new ‘do, but no confirmation on whether this is for a new movie role she is filming or to partake in trends.

What do you think of the new look? I just got foiled Tuesday.  For later this year, predictions are really bold colors, like bright yellow or pink.  That might be a good time to try the blue I’ve been coveting.

If this drastic change is intimidating for you (admittedly, it is often harder for brunettes to transition this look), a finger strand by the temple or nape of neck is a safe bet to start with.

WWPD? – Pop17’s Sarah Austin

The WWPD (What Would Pros Do) segment gets in your face to find out what is on the faces of people who are on-camera for their profession. If the makeup is good enough for them, it is good enough for us!

“Hot and Not” video –  Polished, fresh, capped off with perfect nails

sarah_austin_pop17

Let’s talk about those fabulous nails! Are they real?

They are real. I have natural thick, long and strong nails.

Do you do your own nails or go to a salon?  What is your typical routine?

I go to a salon. My typical manicure is french with glitter. I only get the soft rainbow glitter or soft pink glitter. I only get silver or gold glitter on top if I’m going to Las Vegas.

SarahAustin

What are your favorite products/colors?

I like OPI the most. Light pink and fire engine red.

What is the look in your “Hot and Not” video?

My hot and not video look is going for that natural roll out of bed look, but in reality it took me a couple hours to achieve. It’s neat and natural. My make up is done by an artist at Benefit and my hair is done by the best stylist, Brooke, at DiPierto Todd salon in Mill Valley, CA.

The secret to great nails?

The secret to great nails is always carrying a nail file in your purse and filing them every day.

Sarah Austin, second from right, recently featured in Vanity Fair. Hot Red Nails.

She’s Got The Look – Kate Mara at Sundance Film Festival

Hairstylist Stephen Lewis shares how Solessence readers can duplicate Kate Mara’s casual locks for Sundance using Leonor Greyl:

“Kate Mara wanted to wear a hat but I applied some Serum de Soie Sublimateur to her dry hair and worked it in. I then ran a blow dryer through her hair to give it volume and a tussled look. I finished the look with Eclat Natural on my fingertips and she was ready to go!”

She’s Got The Look – Catherine Keener at Sundance Film Festival

catherinekeener_sundance2010
Catherine Keener kept it loose and casual for her Friday arrival at Sundance. Hairstylist Stephen Lewis worked on her look for both day and night, and gives us the breakdown on how Solessence readers can achieve the same look:

1. Lightly spritz hair with water and apply Leonor Greyl Serum de Soie Sublimateur, working it in.
2. Dry hair and apply a small amount of Eclat Naturel on the ends.

For the evening look (not pictured):

“I applied Serum de Soie Sublimateaur to her wet hair and then blow-dried it with a large round brush. I then applied Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice to the crown of her head for volume. I finished the look with Eclat Naturel. A little goes a long way and makes the hair look very polished.”

It’s all about product, product, product. Leonor Greyl is the brand Madonna travels with on tour.

The Bachelor’s Melissa Rycroft Tyes the Knot

Melissa Rycroft, made famous on The Bachelor for getting the man, not getting the man, and now getting THE man, has tied the knot with former flame Tye Strickland,  also from Dallas.  Strickland and Rycroft dated three years ago but became serious after she became available again when her televised engagement was called off.

The former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader kissed her groom to Monday Night Football in Isla Mujeres.  While she was barefoot in her strapless corsetted Alfred Angelo gown, Rycroft surely glowed with her customized skin treatments performed by celebrity aesthetician Renee Rouleau.

Melissa started with a facial, quickly became hooked and trusted her big day to Renee.  I am a huge fan of the Vitamin C & E.  To find out which products are best for you, find out your skin type.  Happy day, Melissa and Tye!

Suicide Blonde? The Loss of Korean Model Daul Kim, age 20

Daul KimKorean supermodel Daul Kim was found dead yesterday, hanged in her Paris apartment.  At this time police believe it was a suicide.

This is the second high profile model suicide in a relatively short time.  Last June, Kazakh model Ruslana Korshunova was reported as jumping to her death from her high-rise apartment.  She was also 20 years old.

Ruslana Korshunova

Do you remember 20? The crazy/beautiful time when you and the world before you was just starting to bloom? Maybe for these girls life had fast forwarded too far due to rich and possibly rewarding experiences they were having. You can’t fast forward biology, self-esteem, wisdom and everything else that carries you through as you advance in age. At 20 years old, your mettle is still being tested, and you barely know what you are made of. There are seemingly insurmountable insecurities to overcome.  Without the ability to handle pressures and lacking a good support system, depression can make suicide seem like a reasonable option.

Daul Kim blondThe loss of Daul Kim is not only tragic for her family, but to anyone that enjoyed her work as a photogenic face and an interesting blog writer. Few Asians are prominent faces in modeling, with much in the past reserved for “quirky” and “weird”.  Kim fit a standard beauty while remaining exotic. She seemed to be a positive role model.

It would almost be easier to process if she was murdered.  The modeling industry can be especially brutal to those they use the most.  Her blog clearly stated some dissatisfaction.  Comments to catch are those where people thought she must be happy because she had it “all”.  What is your all? You need to define it to get it, and rarely do material possessions make the most critical on a list.  Most humans value true connections.

If this is ruled a suicide, how can agencies better protect the mental health of their clients?  First models are dying on the runway from eating disorders, and now suicide is en vogue? We need to start looking for ways to kill with kindness.  These are children.

Meeting Tim Gunn (yummy!)

One of the biggest highlights of BlogHer was meeting Tim Gunn of Project Runway. My intro to meeting him went something like this:

TG:That is a fabulous cardigan! (Fingering it) What’s the label?
S: (Crap! Who is it by? No offense Target, but I hope I’m not wearing Merona today) Thank you. I can’t remember.
TG: Do you mind if I look?
S: (breaking a sweat – I think I remember getting this at Macy*s. Boston Store?)
And with that he went to my side and stuck his hand down my back while he fished around for the tag.
TG: Laura Ashley!
S: Not a floral to be found on it.
TG: And that’s a good thing.

I think those commercials with Martha Stewart are influencing him.

But aside from being a total label wh0re, WYSIWYG. This impeccably dressed man is exactly as portrayed on TV. Tall & handsome, he almost looks like a work of art. He is so congenial too.

I asked him how he happened into the field of fashion, and he said,

“I actually thought I was going to be many other things when I grew up.”

He went through quite a list of jobs, but dreaming of being a pianist and architect came up multiple times. Isn’t it funny how life can bring us around to doing things we’d never dreamed of? He just seems so perfect as a spokesperson.

Yes, these are actually Tim Gunn trading cards this woman’s husband made for her. And Tim signed them.

Mr. Gunn’s appearance was made possible by Tide®, but the all® fairies (competition) took advantage and were spotted handing out samples of product and chocolate stars.
