Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week S 2014

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York kicked off yesterday with an extensive array of parties, runways and presentations. The fact that High Holidays is falling over the first have has caused a bit of consternation for those observing the Jewish Holiday, but it appears business as usual for the most part.

I was scheduled to head out tomorrow with a good lineup, but just got exciting personal news on this end and I’ll need to bump my trip until February.

No, I’m not pregnant.

Check back for reports on the trends as they head down the runway.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week begins tomorrow

Let the games begin

MBFW New York officially kicks off tomorrow with Fashion’s Night Out (happening nationwide – check your local area for special retail happenings)

Last season I had a tail busting 35+ shows.

This season, life gets in the way.

After years of being a four dog household, the canines went one by one to that doggy park in the sky.  It was sad, and my little boy was heartbroken.

So after declaring our house a pet-free zone, my husband naturally caved after 8 weeks and came home with a puppy.

Last week, she went bounding off to greet a neighbor and was hit on her way back.

Ouch, that smarts!

8 pins, a metal plate and lot of sedatives later, she’ll be just fine.

In two more months.

New York fashion week is out for me.  BUT, I am happy to say the (albeit scaled down) Solessence beat will be covered by the lovely handled via generous PR direct updates, so I look forward to getting you coverage for this exciting season.

NYFW Prabal Gurung ss 2012 – Frederic Fekkai Hair by Didier Malige

Prabal Gurung’s models were sporting a slightly futuristic and a very DIY, wash-and-comb set for his spring 2012 collection.  The intent was to show confidence and feminine toughness, as if wetting the hair by splashing the face after a workout.

The celebrity heavy show was treated to ultra feminine frocks in violets, blacks, blues and whites.  To get Didier Malige’s look for Fekkai at home, follow these easy steps:

  1. Start by blow-drying hair straight, use a flat iron if necessary
  2. Mist water throughout the top half of the head
  3. Apply Fekkai COIFFTM Strong Hold Volume Mousse to wet hair to provide extra hold
  4. Use a fine comb to create a center part and comb the mousse through the hair resulting in a slicked-back look
  5. Spray Fekkai Advanced BRILLANT GLOSSINGTM Sheer Shine Mist over the wet hair for additional shine
  6. Use the low setting on a hairdryer to set the look while maintaining the sleek, wet effect created in the front
  7. Leave the bottom portion of the hair dry and natural
  8. Secure the look with Fekkai COIFFTM Sheer Hold Hairspray

Nicki Minaj. Wonder if she’ll try the look?

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Begins s/s 2012 Coverage 9/8/2011

Lincoln Center gets a facelift with a sexy new facade

It’s that time again!  This year marks the one year anniversary that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week moved from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, as well as the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.  Many changes are underfoot as IMG continues to shape and mold the new space, the latest being a brilliant new face that will add a little pizazz to the more formal architecture of the existing structure, as well as allow for “flexibility…over the next couple of seasons to explore digital integration and other technology driven enhancements,” said Peter Levy, SVP Managing Director, IMG Fashion Worldwide.

There is a huge digital board inside that projects previous runways throughout the week and it is a bit of a thrill to relive a show, or catch a glimpse of one you weren’t privy to be in attendance.  I’m getting chills thinking of that happening in some form outside for the world to see.

Aside from a gratefully long list of shows to cover, both front and backstage, this season I’m also going to be working an event with CND (more on that later, but it does involve Shellac). Don’t forget to get your free mani’s on Fashion’s Night Out! (no, that isn’t it either)

You can check out some of my coverage from last year here and here and here and here and here.

Fashion’s Night Out NY 2010 – Get Your Tickets Here?

It’s open season during New York’s Fashion Week.

fno2010

New York is taking a page from reality and banking on massclusivity to help stimulate the economy.  This year, they’ll combine the couture allure of the invitation-only event of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and feature a runway show for Fashion’s Night Out.  With current season designs.  Say what?  That’s right. They’ll actually show Fall/Winter clothes during the appropriate season.  And,  also? You can buy tickets to the event.

Here’s how it works:

Fashion Week New York : September 9-16, 2010

The focus is always on the next season – fall shows feature spring/summer designs, winter shows feature spring/summer designs.  Designers get x number of invitations depending on the size of the show location they have rented, and designers extend invitations to the show.  This setup allows industry insiders to prepare for what is coming ahead, adjust for production, give magazines and other publications requiring long lead times a chance to get writeup the trends for subscribers.  Attendees, made up of media, buyers and starlets, are privy to the future looks of fashion. This is not a shopping model. The event is not open to the public.

Fashion’s Night Out:  September 10, 2010    Runway:  September 7, 2010

Last year’s effort focused on getting people back into the stores.  Launched by New York Mayor Bloomberg and Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour, the very public, shopping focused event was a welcomed, city-wide embrace of retailers courting the public.

This year, it will also be used to remind people to stay in the present.  1500 tickets will be made available at $25 a piece for attendees to view the trends projected at FW last February – trends filling the stores now.  The pieces, all selected by Vogue, were pulled to represent a cross-selection of trends to inspire shoppers’ wish lists for the main event on the 10th.  This event is open to the public.

As the world increasingly turns to Target for designer collections (even before the collapse of ’08), buries couture houses and kills off magazines in lieu of instant digital information, fashion needs more events like this to gain sure footing.  In the new media culture, a little inclusion goes a long way to creating loyalty.  A runway show based on the here and now of the fantasy world of fashion? Inspiring.

Sign up now for information on the worldwide event and be one of the first to get your tickets for the September 7th show. www.fashionsnightout.com
