Academy Awards 2015: Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson by Mark Townsend – Get The Look

“Working with Dakota has been such an incredible and inspiring experience. For the 2015 Oscars I wanted her hair to reflect her personality and style, and the Saint Laurent gown she chose to wear was very vibrant. We decided her hair should be off the dress, but not necessarily up, so I went for a young, cool ponytail. She has the most amazing fringe so we kept them down with some face framing layers to keep the style modern and perfectly imperfect.
•To create the look, I started by adding a few drops of Dove Youthful Vitality Silk Crème to her damp hair and blow dried with a Mason Pearson brush.
•For texture and grip, I liberally sprayed Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo throughout her hair, then gathered it just above the occipital bone, securing with a tight elastic.
•The key to dressing up a ponytail is in the details, so I pulled a small amount of hair from the ponytail, wrapped it around the base to hide the elastic, and secured with bobby pins.
•To create additional texture I sprayed Sally Hershberger Glam Waves spray in my hands and raked it through the ponytail.
•I finished by spraying Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray to add shine and keep her hair in place all night.”

Academy Awards 2015: Giuliana Rancic preps with Vidal Sassoon Salonist

The Look: Chic, Modern and Effortless “Make-Under”

After feeling inspired by the latest “make-under” trend sweeping the catwalk and the red carpet, Giuliana Rancic decided it was time to make a change for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. After being blonde for about 6 months, Giuliana decided to take it into her own hands, coloring her own hair with Vidal Sassoon Salonist Permanent At-Home Colour.

“Award Season is the busiest time of the year for me and I am constantly running around, so I needed a fresh, updated look that I also felt comfortable doing myself and maintaining.” Giuliana explained, “I’m a natural brunette, so by trading in my blonde hair, I didn’t have to worry about an obvious root line. Vidal Sassoon approached me to see if I wanted to try their new color kit, Salonist. To be honest, I was a bit nervous to try at-home color again because when I’ve colored my hair in the past, it’s always turned out dull and flat. However, with Salonist, I treated my roots & lengths separately, similar to what the pros do, so I felt like I was in good hands.” Giuliana explained that “one of my favorite things in the world is to experiment with hair color. I love switching my color every six months to give myself a fresh new look, so being able to make that switch myself but still get great results is huge!”

Giuliana Rancic colored her hair using Vidal Sassoon Salonist in Medium Gold Brown, transforming her hair color into a natural-looking, rich golden brown. This effortless yet rich brunette shade paired nicely with her red lipstick and Mireille Dagher dress, giving her a classic Hollywood glam look for the Oscars. Giuliana’s red dress and red lipstick made her dimensional hair color pop, and drew all eyes on her new hair look.

1. Prep: Mix Vidal Sassoon Salonist Colour Activating Lotion and Rich Colour Cream into the bowl using the expert brush until smooth and blended.

2. Apply Colour Cream to Roots: Be sure to identify the line on the bottom of the bowl, separating it into sections of ¾ and ¼. Using ¾ of the mix, brush the formula on the roots until covered, beginning with the center part and working your way around the hairline. Wait 20 minutes for the formula to set-in on the roots and hairline.

3. Transform Formula with Serum: Next, add the Vidal Sassoon Salonist Serum to the remaining ¼ of the formula, and mix contents together with the brush until smooth.

4. Apply Glaze to Lengths: Smooth it through the lengths of your hair as done in salons. Be sure to massage all of the hair including the roots to ensure optimal coverage. Wait 10 minutes for the formula to set-in, and then rinse out the colorant and shampoo hair.

5. Protect and Rinse: To finish, use the Vidal Sassoon Salonist Colour Preserving Conditioner and leave it on for 2 minutes. Continue to rinse and style as usual!

Academy Awards 2014: Jared Leto

Along with inspiring her Oscar winning son with advice to “dream and then…do the work”, Constance Leto passed on some fabulous follicular finesse with that head of hair. Chase Kusero, who styled Jared last night with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series, shares with Solessence readers how to get the look at home or salon, through the power of product.

The Look: Natural, Air Dried Waves

Chase and Jared were originally planning on creating a wet side-parted low bun, but then at the last minute, they decided to embrace Jared’s iconic wavy hair and have him wear his hair down. This undeniably cool, rocker hairstyle gives him the classic but edgy look that pairs perfectly with his white Saint Laurent jacket. Jared’s hair look was a two-day process – Chase used the Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Collection the night before and then freshened up Jared’s hairstyle the next day with the ColorFinity Dry Shampoo.

Here’s how Chase created Jared’s look:

1. First prep wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Primer Spray, applying it throughout the hair to enhance your natural wave.

2. Then apply Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Pomade to the length of the hair, providing a flexible hold and soft, glossy curl definition. Create the desired part and let hair air-dry.

3. The next day, spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Dry Shampoo in Rich Darks to the roots to refresh your second day hair while protecting hair color.

4. Then spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to the ends to protect hair from heat before straightening it. Take several sections of hair and straighten for a smooth look.

Jared looks good reaching for an award or for a slice of pie.  You will too!

Oscars 2013: Living Proof styles Natalie Portman

Living Proof Celebrity Hairstylist Chris McMillan was inspired to keep Natalie Portman’s hair chic and simple, channeling a Richard Avedon, 1960s feel for the Academy Awards. Clothing stylist Kate Young shared the maternity Dior dress the possibly pregnant Portman would be wearing, and it took off from there.

“Natalie said that from the front it looked like she’d cut her hair short, and then from the back you saw this beautiful French twist. She called it a fakeout short haircut, which she loved.”

Try this look at your salon or at home:

Apply Living Proof Prim Style Extender while hair is still damp
Blow dry with a round brush – (McMillan recommends YS Parks, a line of Japanese brushes he calls “just unbelievable”)
Create a classic French Twist using bobby pins and teasing to give a bit of cushion.
Tip: Place lower on head to create a beautiful shape from the back
Use Hold Firm Hairspray to smooth and create a chic and modern look

Oscars 2011 – Jewelry

Anne Hathaway wears the $10 million Lucida Tiffany necklace. An easy favorite.

The jewelry, earrings in particular, were big and chunky this year. However, it felt like there was a disconnect between the gowns and the gems. Like a Filene’s Basement Wedding Gown sale, it was as if a big pile of pretty was put on the floor and everyone scrambled, grabbed and wore the first thing they could claw. Most of the jewelry companies got the short end of the stick too, as, with a few exceptions, stars quickly muttered who/what they were wearing.

One thing is for certain: Emeralds were big. Prepping us all for the jewel-tone greens coming this fall, green stones were in number.

Reese Witherspoon

Amy Adams

Annette Benning

Remember that jewelry line Angelina Jolie collaborated on with Robert Procop? I haven’t seen a thing from it except the snake series, until now, and they showed up on Robert Downey Jr.’s wife.

You may have heard the moans and groans by now about Nicole Kidman, but I felt she was finally getting her groove back. Sure it was white, but it fit her beautifully, the jewelry was complimentary, and she had a kickin’ pair of brightly colored stilettos. I loved her necklace.

Although Paltrow looked great in Calvin Klein, I could not understand the wild seahorse (I initially thought they were parrots) earrings she was wearing.  Did not work with the outfit at all.   Contrary to popular belief, neutral doesn’t really mean anything goes with it!

Oscars 2011- Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo could have walked away with Best Looking Couple with his beautiful wife. She had a structural thing going on with the one sleeve. I would liked to have seen a bit more of the gold peep coming across the chest, but it was a different look.

Oscars 2010: Zoe Saldana

zoesaldana_oscars2010At best, this Givenchy dress reminds me that the Olympics and Carnivale (well, South America) are hand in hand for the first time, evah.

I don’t know what happened to the purple dress mojo – see Charlize – but it was missing this eve.

Zoe is practically perfection though, and felt confident enough to pull this off.

It seemed like actors were dressing for music awards this year, not film.

Oscars 2010: Vera Farmiga – Best Dressed – modern trend

verafarmiga_marchesa_oscar copyVera Farmiga stole the show, hands down, in this deep pink gown by Marchesa.  The ruffles were the mod touch for the night, and the gown absolutely flows over her body like a dream.  Her hair mirrored similar form with a slight wave, but was not overly controlled or ‘editorialized’ like most of the other ‘dos.

Makeup -check.

Nude nails – check.

This is how to do it.

Oscars 2010: Cameron Diaz – Best Dressed – traditional

camerondiaz_oscars2010A vision of loveliness.  Cameron Diaz brought the nude look via dress by Oscar de la Renta and carried the red on lips and nails, which was stunning.

Let’s not forget the lovely coif.  After a night of ‘editorial hair’ (mostly pinned back hair with flyaways), we have someone that looks like she has a clean head of hair that has been lovingly curled.

This is the look we’ve come to expect on the Red Carpet.  Flawless.

She’s Got the Look: Diane Kruger’s Updo

dianekruger_oscars2010Oscars 2010 was the year of editorialized hair, which meant a lot of slick backed looks with (read: frizz). Diane Krueger had one of the prettiest takes – somewhat intricate with braids and ponytails and rolls.

Danilo, Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, styled this look for Kruger and shares how you can recreate this at home:

  • Cleanse and condition hair with the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Mist a leave-in conditioner and the Pantene Pro-V Volume Root Lifter Spray Gel all over damp hair
  • Blow dry hair upside down to create a voluminous base for styling
  • Section hair into a side part, divide into three sections (sides and back)
  • Braid side sections of hair back away from the face in an upward direction creating tightness on the sides
  • Pull the back section of hair into a high ponytail leaving volume on top
  • Split ponytail into two sections and twist in a rope-like formation, incorporating side braids into two back twists
  • Continually twist hair while pinning it into place as the twist braid is knotted up around itself
  • Mist hair with the Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray to lock style in place
  • Finish the look with a pretty broche to dress up the look.  Diane wore a Chanel Camelia Nervure brooch to compliment her Chanel gown.

Oscars 2010: Sarah Jessica Parker aka SJP

sjp_oscars2010
Whenever I see rosettes, I always remember the episode of Project Runway where the Ohio fashion designer made little rosettes all over her ‘world traveler’ outfit, including butt pockets. She was laughed off of the show, but it only made me notice the little flowerettes popping up all over fashion.

This year the garden is coming mainstream. I have to admit I bought a very pretty blush top lined with rosettes – and was a little shocked to find them in force for the Oscars. SJP wore one of the more acceptable versions by Chanel Couture, in a soft yellow shade with chic gray/silver. However, the dress was ill-fitting and just not her normal knockout style. Baggy to no end, could she be hiding that fabulous figure because she’s knocked up? That’s one way to reason a stylist’s err of ways.

Oscars 2010: Jennifer Lopez

jenniferlopez_armaniprive_oscars2010
jlo_oscars22010JLo is another actress that is Pretty in Pink, but for someone who wasn’t even nominated, there was a whole lotta dress going on.  The sculptured/ruffled look was dominant and of course Lopez carried off one of the most extravagant of the evening.  Lovely to see how the concept (drawing) compares to the final product.  Designed by Armani Prive.
