Enchanted Doll – Expressions of Beauty

A while back I discussed the Enchanted Doll line, Lotus in particular. A creation of artist Marina Bychkova, Lotus is the symbol of the beauty found in feet binding. Aside from the stunning craftsmanship, detail and aesthetic beauty of these dolls, Lotus was a reminder to me of my great grandmother who was the last generation to have her feet bound. She had very small feet (under 4″) and “walked like she was dancing” so I’ve been told. She lived well over 100 years, met my father, had 4 personal servants to assist her throughout her life, and was revered for the lotus flower shape of her tiny feet.

While I don’t think anyone would wish this on their child today, I have always been fascinated that this practice touched someone in my family. Much like removing a rib to achieve a tiny waistline might intrigue someone from Western culture, it is incredible to think of what people, women in particular, go through in the name of beauty.

Russian born and Canadian based Bychkova can spend several hundred hours creating one doll. Each doll is fashioned as a visual narrative, and a story is told through details such as Indian mehndi, necrophilia (Sleeping Beauty), even Frankenstein’s Bride.
Bychkova also uses the ethereal dolls as a way to express an alternative side to fairy tales.

“What interests me most about fairy tales is the implicit and often explicit violence that lies just beneath the surface of the magic.”

Now, it is a great pleasure to announce Enchanted Dolls will be showing in Milwaukee at Villa Terrace, starting April 8th through June 7th.

Bychkova will reveal new pieces along with many that are on loan from private collections. Please take time to treat yourself to this unique collection that we are fortunate enough to have in Wisconsin.
A limited number of dolls will be available for purchase through arrangements with the artist.

This is a do not miss event at a beautiful location. Treat yourself to Enchanted Doll.

Basses Corn Maize: Live Aerial Preview Not Included

Every year for Halloween, Basse’s throws some major festivities including pony & hay rides, farmer goodies, kids games and what is considered the best corn maize in Wisconsin. This year it is Thomas the Train (er, Tommy). All of this fun doesn’t come cheap though – everything is ala carte, and each experience runs about $6 per person. My question is, how do we know the maize is really a train layout and not the result of some tractor sent on autopilot gone wild? Go forth and get lost.

Meet the Pets

I don’t have a daughter, so I always refer to our girl dogs as my ‘dogters’. Saatchi, a boxer at almost 9 years old, has been a little out of sorts lately. We go in for another round of tests, but it appears to be Cushings and/or a thyroid issue. She’s doing great, although we’ve got late nights, but just wanted to share a little sweetness before the weekend. Please feel free to share your fur faces too.

Update for Pfister Well Spa Lifestyle

(above video: new Lifestyle store to the left on opening shot)The doors are open…but it is a soft opening. The arrival of remaining furniture and wall racks will complete this new space. Sunday there was much unpacking of Solessence and more by the spa staff:

And spa director Mary showed off her new extensions! I wish I had a before photo of her, but I tried to capture the ‘highlights’ that were woven in. It was so artful and natural I thought she had changed her hair color. All done through Cinderella hair, a service offered at the Janice Salon in the Well Spa. A little background on Cinderella Hair:

According to Mary, the Cinderella system starts as “…virgin hair from India, rarely seeing sunlight because it is covered, washed in rainwater, and blessed during the marriage ceremony. During the wedding, the husband cuts off the ponytail, which is sold and goes to support the new family.” Not only is the background a beautiful story, but it was amazing what could be done without actually undergoing a dye process. Mary had 800 pieces to add length and color, but the beauty of the system is that you can add any number to get a small pop of color or subtle highlights. Luvs!

Keep on the lookout for more amazing changes at the Well Spa.

We’re Vegan, Never Freegan

I was just joking the other day that Wisconsin may not be into composting, but it takes the whole recycling effort to heart with ‘dumpster diving’. Massive yard sales and entire containers of good furniture, clothing, electronics, old cds, etc etc etc get tossed or put curbside for whoever wants to claim next. It was a concept I was unaware of before moving here.

Now, we move to a whole other level. Freegans. Dumpster Diving. For Food.

Go Pack Go

Two weeks ago, as my husband and I sat at the Milwaukee Public Market watching the football game with their 7 suspended flat screen tvs floating over the upstairs garden area, we brought up today’s match. “Would you go if you had a ticket?” I asked. We ended up both agreeing that there was no way given the temps being predicted.

Today at 11am he gets a call from his brother, asking if he wants to go to the game. He turned him down! Sure, I remember what was said, but the sun is shining, Pack is playing NY, Fleet Farm is giving away 30,000 hand warmers, and -19 below is feeling more like 20 degrees. “Yeah, but it won’t at 6pm”. Sigh. He is right, but sometimes I feel too practical.

I’m not a huge sport fan, but this game, especially with the frigid cold, will hopefully prove to be exciting. I have never seen a state so in love with their sport teams, and I practically grew up at Candlestick, ahem, Monster Park.

Give a shout out if you would bear the cold to see the game in person!

Update: Good thing my husband didn’t go. To brave 24 below and a 5 hour round trip doesn’t suck ONLY if your team wins. The Pack’s loss to NY would be crushing, save for the fact it was a MAGNIFICENT game. Although I would prefer green & gold against the Patriots, I have to give props and well wishes to the Giants. But Favre was robbed 🙂
