Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week S 2014

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York kicked off yesterday with an extensive array of parties, runways and presentations. The fact that High Holidays is falling over the first have has caused a bit of consternation for those observing the Jewish Holiday, but it appears business as usual for the most part.

I was scheduled to head out tomorrow with a good lineup, but just got exciting personal news on this end and I’ll need to bump my trip until February.

No, I’m not pregnant.

Check back for reports on the trends as they head down the runway.

Juicy Couture: s 2013 Fashion Week

For Spring 2013, Juicy Couture celebrates the modern Pin Up girl, putting an LA spin on the 1950’s color, styling and silhouettes. Threaded with bursts of pattern, print and graphic stripes, fresh takes on classic references and pretty wardrobe essentials, the collection explores the many facets of girlish and over-the-top femininity.

To introduce the line, Juicy Couture got the girls on film for a special presentation at Lincoln Center.  Those stripes look fabulous, and are everywhere this (upcoming) season.

Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman Created Natural Beauty for J Mendel: s2013 Fashion Week

Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, celebrated girlish, natural beauty with matte brown eyes and nude lips for J Mendel’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

“I wanted to create a look that is universally beautiful, that any girl would want to wear.” says Westman. “Because the collection has so many bold and bright colors and patterns, I kept it pretty simple and fresh. A warm flush of peach on the cheeks and a simple glossy lip rounded out the look.”

For a classic meets modern look, celebrity manicurist, Jin Soon Choi chose a timeless nude color for the hands and paired it with something more unexpected and fun on the toes. Choi used bright red, purple and pink on the toes, depending on the model.

Altuzarra: Hair by Fekkai/Paul Hanlon – Fashion Week s2013

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week begins tomorrow

Let the games begin

MBFW New York officially kicks off tomorrow with Fashion’s Night Out (happening nationwide – check your local area for special retail happenings)

Last season I had a tail busting 35+ shows.

This season, life gets in the way.

After years of being a four dog household, the canines went one by one to that doggy park in the sky.  It was sad, and my little boy was heartbroken.

So after declaring our house a pet-free zone, my husband naturally caved after 8 weeks and came home with a puppy.

Last week, she went bounding off to greet a neighbor and was hit on her way back.

Ouch, that smarts!

8 pins, a metal plate and lot of sedatives later, she’ll be just fine.

In two more months.

New York fashion week is out for me.  BUT, I am happy to say the (albeit scaled down) Solessence beat will be covered by the lovely handled via generous PR direct updates, so I look forward to getting you coverage for this exciting season.

Ruffian – MAC Cosmetics launch fashion week inspired press-on nails

Anyone that follows this site knows that the simple but exquisite Ruffian nail from Fashion Week 2010 is my favorite nail of all time. Created by CND, it’s a foil moon at the base of the nail, with either black or blue matte. Genius.

Indeed, Ruffian is a line CND has created some of the most arresting looks for on the catwalk, including this monogrammed moon manicure from Fashion Week also during 2010 (s/s 2011)

That’s why I’m both excited and perplexed that Ruffian has released a limited edition collection of these exact nail looks…via MAC?

Demilune

Spectator

Demoiselle

These limited edition nails run $25 a set of 24 and are available only at MAC online or in a MAC store.

I love seeing runway looks jump to real life (another was earlier in the year when Zooey Deschanel attempted the CND Ruffian tuxedo look).

What do you think about this press-on effort?  Will you be getting a set of the nails? If so, which one/s?

That mystery Fashion Week necklace has been identified!

If you were on my Facebook site around Fashion Week, you might remember me posting on this mystery necklace that was appearing seemingly EVERYWHERE.  I began to wonder if this gorgeous piece was getting handed out as party favors.  Alas, I finally found out that this is a Pegasus Necklace and it can be purchased here . The reason it was everywhere? Turns out it was pulled by Lucky Magazine and Vogue for editorial shoots, so I’m not the only one with good taste.  This is a show stopper and looks as well with a dressed up look as it does casual.  Go get yours now.

NYFW Prabal Gurung ss 2012 – Frederic Fekkai Hair by Didier Malige

Prabal Gurung’s models were sporting a slightly futuristic and a very DIY, wash-and-comb set for his spring 2012 collection.  The intent was to show confidence and feminine toughness, as if wetting the hair by splashing the face after a workout.

The celebrity heavy show was treated to ultra feminine frocks in violets, blacks, blues and whites.  To get Didier Malige’s look for Fekkai at home, follow these easy steps:

  1. Start by blow-drying hair straight, use a flat iron if necessary
  2. Mist water throughout the top half of the head
  3. Apply Fekkai COIFFTM Strong Hold Volume Mousse to wet hair to provide extra hold
  4. Use a fine comb to create a center part and comb the mousse through the hair resulting in a slicked-back look
  5. Spray Fekkai Advanced BRILLANT GLOSSINGTM Sheer Shine Mist over the wet hair for additional shine
  6. Use the low setting on a hairdryer to set the look while maintaining the sleek, wet effect created in the front
  7. Leave the bottom portion of the hair dry and natural
  8. Secure the look with Fekkai COIFFTM Sheer Hold Hairspray

Nicki Minaj. Wonder if she’ll try the look?

She’s Got the Look: Jin Soon for Sally Hansen at Prabal Gurung – MBFW ss 2012

No detail was left out to ensure Prabal Gurung’s showing was a cohesive collection.  Beautiful purples dominated from clothes to lips to nails.

Did you know Prabal Gurung collabs with Sally Hansen each season on a new color specific to his collection?  For ss 2012, he created a dark, nearly black yet glowing purple called “Loves-Me-Not” in the Complete Salon Manicure formula that is a stunner.  Celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi took it one step further and layered the dark over Sally Hansen’s Lacey Lilac Xtreme Wear base. You can see better detail on the sample nails in the photo below:

“Loves-Me-Not” becomes available on counters everywhere Sally Hansen is sold around April 2012.

For the runway, the manicures were applied on the spot.  Jin Soon shared with me how to get this look, and you can do it at home or salon as well.  It is similar to the CND Moon nail that was my favorite of all time so you know I am all over this look. Watch the video and see why Jin says the Sally Hansen brush is made for this type of art:

Like it?  Will you try it?

A look at Gurung’s collection gives you an idea of how perfectly this nail completed the look.

CND Pretty Poison nails at Jen Kao: MBFW

CND created some crazy beautiful nails at Jen Kao this, their 15th year at Fashion Week New York

Leah models the complete look – it was her birthday

The premise was partially based on a “bad girl” so the base was spray-painted black with strong colors faded to the tips.  While models wore one color, CND’s Jan Arnold donned different colored tips for a poisonous frog look.  I actually saw a poisonous frog exhibit earlier this year at MPM and the nails took me right back.  I’ve been obsessing.

You don’t need a spray paint machine to get this look at home or salon. Check out the gorgeous Wanda Ruiz as she shares for ways you can achieve this dramatic look. Here’s to another fabulous 15 years CND!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Begins s/s 2012 Coverage 9/8/2011

Lincoln Center gets a facelift with a sexy new facade

It’s that time again!  This year marks the one year anniversary that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week moved from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, as well as the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.  Many changes are underfoot as IMG continues to shape and mold the new space, the latest being a brilliant new face that will add a little pizazz to the more formal architecture of the existing structure, as well as allow for “flexibility…over the next couple of seasons to explore digital integration and other technology driven enhancements,” said Peter Levy, SVP Managing Director, IMG Fashion Worldwide.

There is a huge digital board inside that projects previous runways throughout the week and it is a bit of a thrill to relive a show, or catch a glimpse of one you weren’t privy to be in attendance.  I’m getting chills thinking of that happening in some form outside for the world to see.

Aside from a gratefully long list of shows to cover, both front and backstage, this season I’m also going to be working an event with CND (more on that later, but it does involve Shellac). Don’t forget to get your free mani’s on Fashion’s Night Out! (no, that isn’t it either)

Josie Natori – the highs & lows in fashion for 2011/2012

Josie Natori, the designer famed for her seductive designs in the lingere department, has struck a deal with Target to create a line that will launch around October 31st for the Christmas season and January for Valentine’s Day.  The line will create a middle ground for the luxury cuts and fabrics she’s built her empire on.

But what will you wear over it?  The Natori collection, of course.

Natori’s presentation during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was filled with metal metal metal.  It started off with a custom kimono (available for order only)

Most of the collection was in black or muted tones, but when there was color, it popped.

I am completely enamored with hammered metal. As a belt and forearm cuff? Die.

The guests were stylin’ as well. Her eyes matched her fur which matched her matcha. Her lips and nails dead on. This is a case where I loved matchy-matchy.

This outfit is so fantastically 80’s!  It featured a top piece that acted like an infinity scarf or cowl neck, which could be removed.

MAC’s Ruby Wu was the red lip of the day, with Old Gold pigment

Natori’s presentation centered around the Japanese Tea Ceremony

Of course I had to ask. Josie wore YSL nail lacquer.

and lous

TRESemme Works the Crowd at Fashion Week

Attending Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York? You’ve got one more day to treat your tresses by TRESemme. A sponsor of fashion week, they’ve taken over a huge corner with a two-story location where you can wait on white leather seating and get escorted upstairs to have your hair refreshed during the event.

Who will be working on your hair, you ask? This is way beyond beauty school trainee – a style team that includes the like of Jay Palaniuk, editorial hair stylist. Jay has worked on numerous covers and in-house events and will give you all the details to the science behind how the TRESemme products work to give your hair amazing style.

One of the mousse products contains special polymers that may eliminate the need for followup hairspray, depending on your style. You’ll get great shine and hold with less product (always a plus).

This is a perfect way to spend time between shows. This isn’t a popup but the waitlist has been long all week, and there is no mercy for the wanderer (your name will get erased and you’ve got to start at square one again). It’s okay, the Kefir people continually walk by with bottles, making sure you have enough sustinance for the wait.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion week through February 17th.

First Look: CND and Jason Wu Color Effects Collection

I first told you about the CND and Jason Wu collaboration here  but then it got even better. CND sent samples over of this limited edition collection which isn’t set to release in the US or Europe until May.  I’m actually going to Wu’s show tomorrow during Fashion Week where his models will be wearing debuting these new shades, and wanted to give you my impressions on the colors:

Miss Wu: This is must have – a stunning oyster with a pearlized matte finish.  Sound unusual?  It is.  Pearl is a big trend this season and Wu has captured it in what is also his signature color with Miss Wu.  The photo shows the color (dry) with the matte finish.  With a topcoat it gleams, but I like the unusual eggshell soft shine.

Brigette: This dusty rose applies much lighter than the final look. The photo isn’t picking up much of the pink but it is very pretty. As with the other colors, this is soft and muted.

Sophia: When this color first went on, the model said “It reminds me of pantyhose.” We had a good laugh, but as soon as it dried we were oohing and ahhing. Although greige is on it’s last leg (it is rumored) this is a beautiful mushroom. It was complimentary with many colors.

strong>Veronica: This red is gorgeous, but it took several coats to achieve the same look. With the other muted tones it is a bit of a shocker in the set.

Tweed: Remember the Ralph Lauren designer paints that were poplular in the 90’s? I ALWAYS wondered when they would come out with a polish set that would mimic the offerings. This set comes with a bottle that is said to texturize the polish to look like tweed. It is reminiscent of fiber strengtheners, and when put on the nail, I’m not sure it made much of a difference. It looked more like your nails were done before bed and your hair stuck to it. A bit of topcoat completely erased any effect, and left all colors in a beautiful high shine. It’s a decent distraction.

This set becomes available in May and is sold by nail professionals only. If you are looking for soothingly muted colors, you’ll be very pleased with this Jason Wu and CND collaboration.

When Worlds Collide: Jerseylicious Meets Elene Cassis

Jerseylicious and fashion – never the twain shall meet?  The Style Network is trying to change that with special guest appearances by designer Elene Cassis on the final two episodes of the season (January 23rd and January 30th).  Cassis is a recent Fashion Group International Women’s Ready-to-Wear finalist and will be showing again during Fashion Week in New York  this February.

No clue if Cassis is making everyone over, but there will be a large audience from all walks watching.  The day this popped in my box, one of my clients (picture CEO entrenched in a very corporate world) had raved on and on about how she had hooked her daughter onto watching Jerseylicious and now both seriously addicted to the craze.  She’s not alone – the show is sure to get renewed. Catch the final episodes starting this Sunday and chime in on Cassis’ looks.

St. Pucchi Bridal Runway – 25th Anniversary

It takes a lot to run a business in fashion, and Rani Totman has led the way for St. Pucchi bridal for 25 years.  This in-demand couture bridal line started on a whim to create a finale wedding dress for charity, and has grown to dress celebrities and multiple sport figures wives alike.  St. Pucchi gowns often make their way to the screen (remember “Friends” Phoebe getting married in one?) because they are statement dresses.

For the 25th anniversary, a tribute was setup before the show featuring Rani’s own selection of gowns to represent the decades.  Chilled waters and flutes of champagne were sipped as I spoke with Rani’s daughter about the daunting task of selecting the specific gowns to bring, and it was a great perspective.  Photographs highlighted other looks over the years, and Rani’s press photograph was framed to sign.  Want to see more?  Check this post to see a brief chat with Rani herself discussing the beauty aspect.

Then the show!

Oh the gowns – there are  many of them – and I have them all here for you to view.

Rani Totman makes use of feathers, beading, ribbons and anything else her heart fancies:

With a few mischevious touches (Yes, that is a peek-a-boo corset. Wait until you see the front):

[flagallery gid=10 name=”St Pucchi part 1″]

A bit of lace ( all nails by Zoya Nail Polish):

I think this model must be a fav or some sort of muse because she is pictured over the years in St. Pucchi gowns.  I love her!  Isn’t her look reminiscent of Paulina Porizkova?

Some intense beading:

The crowd went wild for this gown:

And flowers:

Of course, the main theme was butterflies, pulling in the original element from her first show in 1985.  This time, her runway opened and closed with butterflies seemingly flitting over an ivory, then lilac train, and butterflies also accessorized the hair and bouquets.

[flagallery gid=11 name=”Gallery”]

Want to see St. Pucchi in action?  YouTube has put a worldwide block on my videos because of the runway music (really YouTube?) but you can view them here:

Trunk shows are starting to book.  If you would like to view these wedding gowns, please contact St. Pucchi or your local bridal boutique to inquire about the line.

Zoya Nails at St. Pucchi 25th Anniversary Bridal Runway

The Look at St. Pucchi? Romance!

Zoya Nail Polish graced the hands at St. Pucchi’s 25th Anniversary Bridal Runway show.   Zoya’s manicurist Sunshine chose two different silvers (Trixie, left and Laney, right) to highlight the beauty of the dresses:

Trixie is described as ” Stunning light silver with a sparkling metallic foil finish. A chic and edgy shade that adds a spark to your look.”

Of Laney, Sunshine described the selection as this: “St Pucchi bridal gowns are very whimsical so Laney went extremely well because it also has that same type of pretty (silver metallic duochrome with hint of green). Some of the gowns also had a silver/lavender hue to them so when put together they were match made in heaven.”

I can attest that the nails were very eyecatching and the Laney often pulled other tones in.  Check out this quick video on the preview to the show with Rani Totman and her concept of St. Pucchi beauty.  The full collection will be up tomorrow.

Fashion Forward: Minkoff tries on CMO Saynt for Size

Saynt tweets his first day on the job

What a difference two years makes.  In February 2009, Daniel Saynt was telling Solessence BlogTalk Radio listeners his side of the story regarding the controversial rumors to his organizing a bumrush of fashion week tents.  Today, it was announced that fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff has tapped this pretty pony as Chief Marketing Officer for her beloved line.  According to Minkoff’s missive as released by The Cut, she sums up the decision this way:

“We feel bloggers and social media are playing a key role in the quickly changing industry, and we are shaping future marketing initiatives around these channels. Daniel’s experience will be an invaluable asset to Rebecca Minkoff moving forward. We plan to be a leader in the democratization of fashion, and Daniel will help guide us in that path.”

FashionIndie.com is known for edgier looks, reporting and attitude, and there is no question Saynt was brilliant running the game.   It will be an interesting journey to see Minkoff getting her money’s worth.

Here’s how it works:

Fashion Week New York : September 9-16, 2010

The focus is always on the next season – fall shows feature spring/summer designs, winter shows feature spring/summer designs.  Designers get x number of invitations depending on the size of the show location they have rented, and designers extend invitations to the show.  This setup allows industry insiders to prepare for what is coming ahead, adjust for production, give magazines and other publications requiring long lead times a chance to get writeup the trends for subscribers.  Attendees, made up of media, buyers and starlets, are privy to the future looks of fashion. This is not a shopping model. The event is not open to the public.

Fashion’s Night Out:  September 10, 2010    Runway:  September 7, 2010

Last year’s effort focused on getting people back into the stores.  Launched by New York Mayor Bloomberg and Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour, the very public, shopping focused event was a welcomed, city-wide embrace of retailers courting the public.

This year, it will also be used to remind people to stay in the present.  1500 tickets will be made available at $25 a piece for attendees to view the trends projected at FW last February – trends filling the stores now.  The pieces, all selected by Vogue, were pulled to represent a cross-selection of trends to inspire shoppers’ wish lists for the main event on the 10th.  This event is open to the public.

As the world increasingly turns to Target for designer collections (even before the collapse of ’08), buries couture houses and kills off magazines in lieu of instant digital information, fashion needs more events like this to gain sure footing.  In the new media culture, a little inclusion goes a long way to creating loyalty.  A runway show based on the here and now of the fantasy world of fashion? Inspiring.

Sign up now for information on the worldwide event and be one of the first to get your tickets for the September 7th show. www.fashionsnightout.com

MBFW – f/w 2010 – Ruffian

You’ve gotta forgive me, I’m a little slow on the draw right now.   Fashion Week is in full swing, last time at the tents.  Too many changes going on to attend, but there are some exciting bright spots.  The nails at Ruffian, by CND, were gorgeous!  Matte over blue over foil.

Modelruffian_gThose stockings are oh-so-familiar.  Love/Hate.
