TEEN VOGUE UNIVERSITY – the gift that keeps on giving

For my 13th birthday, I asked my dad if we could travel to South America to get a pet Ocelot. After letting that “No” slide off me like water on a duck, I followed up with a request for a Persian kitty. Decline xs 2.

When I turned 16, I thought I would go a little easier on him.  I asked my father for a subscription to Vogue.  I had been buying issues here and there, but I needed more.  Like on the monthly.  These dreams too went up in smoke when my father went to the store to preview a copy and saw – gasp – nekkid people in the fall issue!  At least that’s how he was ratted out by my sis when I opened up my present and found a subscription to the delightful but completely different direction of SEVENTEEN.  I was crushed, but this time I didn’t even had a backup plan.  Vogue was the holy grail, and I had to do without.

Oh, teens have it so much easier these days.  Not only is there a TEEN VOGUE magazine version for the young and fashion hungry, but TEEN VOGUE is the host to 525 lucky young women each year for TEEN VOGUE UNIVERSITY, a program for those aspiring to careers in the fashion industry.  Hopefuls apply to participate in the three day event, soaking in knowledge from industry veterans and experts providing all of the inside information that could possibly be dished in this intimate climate.

Is this your first time hearing about it, and you are finding it is SOLD OUT?  Pssst – here is your BACKUP PLAN:

You can still get in on the action for one of the most jam packed days of the event.  Via webinar, you can watch live or later – your choice.  PURCHASE BY OCTOBER 12TH.

  • View the sessions from a special Webinar – you can be privy to the information, even if you can’t be there in person.
  • Buy before October 13th and get a special registration price of 24.95, or after October 13 for $34.95 (you snooze, you lose ten bucks)
  • Check it here http://fora.tv/conference/teen_vogue_fashion_university_2012

Who’s on roll call?

Featuring:

· GRACE CODDINGTON: THE VISIONARY

One of America’s most prominent editors kicks off Fashion U. with a welcome address to share her journey within the fashion and magazine industry and to inspire the new generation of fashion royalty

· OLIVIER THEYSKENS: THE MODERN MARVEL

As a frontrunner and innovator in the fashion industry, Olivier Theyskens was awarded the title of Best International Designer by the CFDA and currently holds the position of Artistic Director of Theory as well as Head Designer of the Theyskens’ Theory collections. Theyskens will reveal the challenges and benefits of overseeing a variety of fashion brands as well as the valuable insights he has learned throughout his illustrious career.

· NICOLE RICHIE: the it girl

Nicole Richie wears multiple hats from Creative Director of Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960, working with The Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation, to writing a best-selling book called “The Truth about Diamonds.” Richie will share how she stays on the pulse with what she is known for and how she influences numerous industries and individuals through her many talents.

· Amy Astley & the TEEN VOGUE editors

Whether you’re interested in becoming a magazine editor and/or are an avid TEEN VOGUE fan, you’ll hear firsthand stories of what it takes to produce a top fashion magazine from our panel of editors, led by Editor in Chief Amy Astley.

Erin Fetherston: The Flower Child

Fetherston was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated from UC Berkeley before attending Parsons in Paris to study fashion design. She launched her line in 2004, showcasing feminine, romantic, ruffled designs that have since become her signature. The brand earned a devoted celebrity following, and after moving to New York City in 2007, Fetherston was a recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award and finalist for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. In 2009, she was inducted as a member of the CFDA. Last year, she debuted Erin, a new contemporary line, which is enjoying critical acclaim from retail and press. Fetherston will share what inspires her designs and her girly style aesthetic.

 PHILLIP LIM

Leading a pioneering force in the industry, Phillip Lim embodies youthful elegance and personal style. Lim will take you behind-the-scenes in what the day-to-day is like for this influential designer and his steps to success.

How does that even sound like a backup plan?  Sounds pretty front and center when you think about it.  If you are unsure about a future in fashion, TEEN VOGUE University is the perfect time to dip your toes in the information with a small but meaningful commitment.   Already have plans to attend?  I’d love to hear about it.   ~xo

Inspiration: Pamella Roland S 2013 Preview

Fashion Week is around the corner, and I love these little sneak peeks at the inspiration behind the upcoming runway looks for Spring 2013. Today’s focus is on Pamella Roland:

“For Spring 2013 the Pamella Roland collection is inspired by the iconic American artist Ellsworth Kelly. His stark black and white paintings are part of a body of work that resonate in particular because of their clean almost severe lines that speak to a harmony between the shapes that they create.”
– Pamella DeVos, designer of Pamella Roland

I love grey, yellow, black as a color combination and look forward to the sharp yet feminine, floaty promises.

Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations

I’ve long been a Schiaparelli fan, and who doesn’t like Prada?  So it was with great interest I read last fall about Impossible Conversations: Schiaparelli and Prada, an imaginary thread woven to link two that have made fashion history.  Schiaparelli, unfortunately, had her path shadowed by Coco Chanel, who was said to have taken much of Schiaparelli’s work and made it more mainstream.  Prada was said to have been disapproving of the way the exhibit, so I’m even more intrigued!  Open now through August 19th, it’s just another reason to get to New York before Fashion Week.

On View May 10–August 19, 2012

The Met’s Spring 2012 Costume Institute exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, explores the striking affinities between Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, two Italian designers from different eras. Inspired by Miguel Covarrubias’s “Impossible Interviews” for Vanity Fair in the 1930s, the exhibition features orchestrated conversations between these iconic women to suggest new readings of their most innovative work. Iconic ensembles are presented with videos of simulated conversations between Schiaparelli and Prada directed by Baz Luhrmann, focusing on how both women explore similar themes in their work through very different approaches.

The exhibition showcases approximately ninety designs and thirty accessories by Schiaparelli (1890–1973) from the late 1920s to the early 1950s and by Prada from the late 1980s to the present. Drawn from The Costume Institute’s collection and the Prada Archive, as well as other institutions and private collections, signature objects by both designers are arranged in seven themed galleries: “Waist Up/Waist Down,” “Ugly Chic,” “Hard Chic,” “Naïf Chic,” “The Classical Body,” “The Exotic Body,” and “The Surreal Body.”

Schiaparelli, who worked in Paris from the 1920s until her house closed in 1954, was closely associated with the Surrealist movement and created such iconic pieces as the “Tear” dress, the “Shoe” hat, and the “Bug” necklace. Prada, who holds a degree in political science, took over her family’s Milan-based business in 1978, and focuses on fashion that reflects the eclectic nature of Postmodernism.

Have you gone? What did you think?

My Schiaparelli Shocking perfume bottles (and Gaultier, which appears to have been inspired by)

Here’s the other reason, for the kid: Spiderman: Turn off the Dark (but I hear a spoof is coming soon too!)

CFDA “You Can’t Fake Fashion” Totes eBay Auction is LIVE

In the tents at Fashion Week last month there was a preview display of the bags created for CFDA’s   (Council of Fashion Designers of America) “You Can’t Fake Fashion” auction, held on eBay. The auction raises monies for various charities, scholarships and awards through the 400 members.  Last year the purses sold out, and they are aiming for another run.  I took this photo of a great bag by Robert Geller, one I was coveting.

The auction isn’t the easiest to find.  I’ve been waiting for launch day, today, so that I could bid on this beauty, only to find it had already been snapped up.  I am crushed! Each tote is customized by designer – which one is striking your fancy?

Paris Fashion Week – Air Chanel

Lagerfeld formed a new mile high club with Paris Couture Week and Air Chanel

And this is why I love the shows overseas just a wee bit more – they tend to go ballistic with creativity.

Karl Lagerfeld has been on a roll lately, what with the banquet runway and now this, Air Chanel.

This is a luxury liner, no question.  Numbered seats, Chanel logo carpeting, sky views and 62 couture outfits.

I love this little number.  It has ombre, a denim-ish look, and sparkles? Sold.

Jeanne Beker shared the amazing invitation

Love the drink cart!

Pockets were everywhere, but what I love?

Extending the sequins down the leggings.

Accessorize with your thighs.  FAB.

Sleek black number

Jason Wu for Target will be sold online and in stores with a collection of scarves and totes.  The designer is also knocking off his signature pet Miss Wu, an owl that graces many of his high end accessories.  In her place comes MiLu, a curious curled up cat.

While nothing is like the real deal, this Jason Wu line is definitely the look for less.  This 53 piece collection inspired by An American in Paris is sure to be a sellout like Missoni, so plan your shopping accordingly.

Event, Chicago: Chanel SS 2012 Trunk Show Today, Newly Designed Space

The Neiman Marcus redesigned Chanel shop on Magnificent Mile holds first trunk show for ss 2012 season

Today from 10am – 4pm, explore the new Chanel space inside Neiman Marcus and get first view of the SS 2012 collection.  Three months in the making, the new shop was designed by architect Peter Marino who designs for all Chanel locations worldwide.  The revamped space boasts a multi-panel video column which features current season runway video, gilded bamboo-like textured wallpaper, and crimson seating with gold accent pillows.

A  focal point that is unique to the Chicago location is the inclusion of a distinct arched window.  Wendy Krimins, vice president and general manager of Neiman Marcus said she knew that the windows overlooking the city were on the other side of the wall and was pleased when the decision was made to expose the view.  Tearing down the wall and fitting new glass panes was a challenge, but the end result is a dramatic backdrop to shop.

The new space also showcases select accessories such as jewelry, shoes and handbags.  Chanel is redesigning their handbag area on the first floor of the store with square footage equaling the boutique.  The new look should be completed by April.

Chanel SS 2012 trunk show will be held from 10am – 4pm,  Wednesday January 11

  • 737 North Michigan

Neiman Marcus Stores to Accept Visa and MasterCard Nationwide

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and Macy*s is not the only place he wants to shop

What’s Hot for November:

British jewelry designer Stephen Webster shows his new Murder She Wrote collection Wednesday, November 2 from 11am-4pm in Chicago.  He’s a favorite designer of Madonna, Rihanna, Katy Perry and many more artists for his wicked interpretations of themes and liberal use of jewels.  Daisy Lowe is the current face for the campaign.

Impulse buying at Neiman Marcus will never be the same, and for good reason. After all, because NM has declined to accept Visa and Mastercard instore over the years, most shoppers had adjusted to the ATM Sprint. At least on North Michigan it went something like this:

  • Spot something own-worthy
  • Realize that cash or Amex, you’ve left home without it
  • Bust through the double doors and down the street to the ATM
  • Withdraw dangerous amounts of cash in very public places
  • Hand over stacks of bills to pay for items (the stories are legendary)

Or,  you know, just leave.

Leave no more, as Neiman Marcus begins accepting Visa/MC officially on November 1st.

Citing customer desires for “flexibility in their payment choices,” the in-store shopping experience is now catching up with online ease.  I had a chance to try this out a little earlier in the week while I was in Bellevue.  The customer service was wonderful as usual, and as I handed over my card there was only the slightest of hesitations.  “Yes, it’s Visa” I heard one say to another, and a quick, tentative swipe completed the transactions.  Holiday shopping kicks into gear this month, and Neiman Marcus makes it easier for all to spread a little more cheer by accepting charge cards.

Norma Kamali takes the catwalk to new dimensions with 3D show and shopping site – MBFW

Just as she broke ground by being one of the first in fashion to have an online presence, fashion designer Norma Kamali is doing it again by going 3D with her spring 2012 collection.  She had a private presentation during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week launching the line and website going live:

Attendees were given a pair of trademark Kamali look 3D glasses to view the 67 piece collection via a film screening, and a preview of the website before it went live:

What do you think of the NormaKamali3d.com site? Are we steps away from a Total Recall experience, where ads call out to you? I personally love that Kamali is truly moving fashion forward in this sense. The footage is particularly animated, but I think even a catwalk or natural scenes would work. In this medium you have a chance to see how the fabric looks, how the piece moves. Pretty interesting, but a lot to take in. You get a chance to see a little humor too, as with Look 29:

iframe>

If the video isn’t showing I apologize, I’ve tried multiple ways to get it to load.  Go to NormaKamali3d.com to view the entire collection in 2d or 3d.  You can also request your own set of 3d paper cateye glasses there or on Norma Kamali’s Facebook page.  Over 17,000 have been requested to date.

Nautica : Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week ss 2012 NY

Fabulous color, except where there were no shirts. That was fabulous too.

Nautica held their private presentation for SS 2012 Fashion Week on the double deck rooftop of the fabulous Empire Hotel.

Who needed surf with the sun, spins from a DJ, spring fashions and drinks flowing?  Perfect day for Nautica.

Love the denim boat shoes and bermuda shorts

A touch of pink looks good with denim blue (a hot trend for Spring)

I’m originally a California girl and these jackets take me right back to that lifestyle feel.  Jackets are lightweight, weatherproof, look good.  LOVE.  The murse I imagine gets passed off to the girlfriend.

Ladies go crazy for a sharp dressed man

Flashback: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Jason Wu

Jason Wu’s show was such an interesting number.  The classic clothing with a bit of a Black Swan theme going had gilded hair, lids, heels and nails.  And although this was for fall, the gorgeous black on white numbers have been appearing on starlets like Reese Witherspoon all summer. Behold:

One of my favorite details of this show was the bleaching station. Here, models had their eyebrows bleached as if they were shaved off. After the show, they had to return to have them colored back on. What is done in the name of beauty!

The fabrics carried the metallic theme forward:

Find out how to get the CND gilded nail here:

For hair, gold was painted onto the hair in a leaf shape:

Christian Louboutin – Fall 2011: Knockoffs you can live with

Not  your Whistler’s Mother’s shoe?

Louboutin’s Fall 2011 Ad Campaign is creating a revival of sorts that art teachers and historians would envy – getting people in droves to notice the masters.

Reportedly shot by Peter Lippmann, the new Look Book features recreations from famous paintings, updated with a little Lou.  The resulting photos are beautiful, with a little “Where’s Waldo?” thrown in.  Although a similar feel pops up now an again (the old “models with ballgowns and lions is back – I still have my 2005 Vogue with Drew Barrymore) this is the first time in memory art is imitating, um, art so specifically. To see originals and the rest of the campaign, click the gallery. Do you have a favorite?

Note: Although many are saying the ‘shoe in the lap portrait’ is Francois Clouet’s “Elizabeth of Austria” ( a headshot) I feel the recreation is closer to Petrus-Paulus Rubens portrait d’Elisabeth de Bourbon (Anne d’Autriche)

Nokia & ELLE: search for The Next Style Correspondent

 I need your help!  I am off today in a pretty cool location which I will be disclosing shortly. I’ll be able to do so by uploading photos and video to you straight from the 12 megaPINKxle Nokia N8 sent to me for the Nokia & ELLE correspondent search.

What’s this about?

Nokia is searching for 8 lucky representatives to cover Fashion Week front row – and I’d love to be one of them. They’ve asked for a submission of our most fashionable photos. My entry is from Fashion Week last February, backstage at Diego Binetti. I love this bit of an action shot. The model is beautifully dressed and in such a lovely pose as everyone has descended upon her, working to finish up the intricate hair pieces. Her make up is being worked on, she’s getting eyelashes, the gorgeous CND nails are front and center, and you can even see the patterned stocking trend. It’s a photo that captures what it takes to make it runway.

I would love if you could LIKE this photo in support

Simply go to the Nokia Elle Facebook page
http://nokia.ly/iL8Q0i

If you don’t see my photo on the front page, you can search by date uploaded

Click on the photo and Like.  That’s it!

This first round ends Tuesday, June 21st.  YOU can also enter if you like.  You should.

Check back later as I bring you great coverage using the Nokia N8.  It’s pink! It’s powerful!  It’s beauty and brains.

QVC fashion powerhouse Jeanne Bice dies: 1939-2011

Wisconsinite-turned-Floridian Jeanne Bice of the Quacker Factory has died. Last month it was disclosed she had cancer.  She laughed all the way to the bank by building a $50M company out of those crazy holiday sweaters that became a year round favorite to followers.  She was as famous for her easy conversation as she was for rocking a colorful, signature headband.

Bice welcoming Isaac Mizrahi to the QVC family

She often talked about not achieving her dreams until later in life (60) but it was a celebration of reaching, not all of the lost years. No word on what will happen to the line that keeps QVC quite happy.

She started wearing the headbands as a way for people to remember her other than “the fat one” (as she put it).  It worked.  She remarked that when she moved to Florida, it served dual purpose in keeping her hair out of the way with the humidity.

July 20, 1939-June 10, 2011
A Life of Love

Jeanne Bice loved life. From her childhood in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin-taking care of her baby brother Dick, all through her married years to her adoring Butch in Ripon, Wisconsin, raising her beloved Tim and Lee, Jeanne was surrounded by love. Everyone loved to be at Jeanne’s house. That’s where the party was-everyday.

In the Rubber Duck Principle, Jeanne wrote this about Angels:

‘Sometimes we feel that we are all alone, as life brings us challenges to overcome and hardships to bear. But when we least expect it, help can appear. It may be a kind word from a stranger or a phone call at just the right time, and suddenly we are surrounded by the loving grace of God. Miracles happen everyday because angels are everywhere.’

Today, June 10, 2011, Jeanne joined the Angels who will make miracles happen forever.

God Bless Jeanne Bice. May she rest in Peace.

United Nude: Architectural Shoes for 2011

 Exclusive by Design, Not by Price

 Structure and detail was on the runway for 2011, and United Nude shoe design concepts fit perfectly into play here.

Architect Rem D Koolhaas and shoemaker Galahad Clark created United Nude, and the line has shot off. New flagship stores are being created in Amsterdam, New York, Shanghai and London. The growth is due to the exciting blend of design and shapes, new constructions and materials “pushing boundaries of what is possible.”

In addition to the existing line, new styles and a mensline have been introduced.

The United Nude Hollow is in the classical style dress shoe with leather moulded outsole and hollowed carbon fibre heel.  Gorgeous look that keeps it classical without going generic.

I wish I could show you them all here.

Some of my favorites include the Pin Buckle, Haiku, Abstract, Tangle Sandal, Ultra Loop and Mobius Slide.  try Endless.com for purchasing.

RIP Model Mia Amber Davis

With profound sorrow, at my sister Ida’s request, I am letting all of her friends know that her BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER MIA AMBER DAVIS passed away a short while ago!!! I know it’s unbelievable!!! We are all in shock!! Please keep my sister and our family in your prayer. ~ Carolyn Bishop Moore

Considered a favorite plus size model to many because of her stunning looks and genuine personality,  Mia Amber Davis’s death was announced today via the above message on her personal Facebook page.  Her birthday is listed as July 25, 1990 (but this cannot be correct).  No cause has yet been revealed. ***UPDATE: The cause is now thought to be related to knee surgery the model had the day before.  This was a common procedure and she was dealing with an old basketball injury from high school.  Mia experienced dizzyness and was taken to the hospital in Los Angeles by her cousin, where she died.  More updates as they happen.

Mia rose to fame as a 6′ tall plus size model, TV producer (Ricki Lake, The Next Food Network Star, Divorce Court), actress and editor for Plus Model Magazine, and often spoke to the “curvy” community on having positive self-esteem.  She was in Wisconsin last year in support of Strut Your Stuff.  She is survived by her husband.

Fans of Mia can leave a message on her Facebook Fan page

From Mia’s page:

Plus Model, Actor, Producer, Creative Editor for Plus Model Magazine.

Begining her career as an intern then production assistant for several television shows, such as “Ricki Lake”, “Showtime at the Apollo,” “Def Comedy Jam”, ” VH-1 Hard Rock Live” and many others, Mia soon became a producer at the nationally syndicated “Ricki Lake Show”. Mia also went on to produce several pilots and produce a dating show, “Change of Heart.” Most recently, Mia was the Senior Booking Producer for the Star Jones Show on Court TV.

While producing, an acting opportunity presented itself and Mia Amber burst onto the silver screen as “Rhonda” the full figured co-ed in the DreamWorks feature film “Road Trip”.

With the success of “Road Trip” Mia landed her first magazine cover (“Belle”) and Mia Amber realized that she wanted a coveted place in the world of plus sized modeling. Mia did her research, reinvented herself by losing 90 lbs. and was blessed with the opportunity to represent Ashley Stewart as a “Great Woman of Style.”

As a model Mia Amber has also worked with Richard Metzger, Monif C., Queen Latifah for Curvation, Abby Z., Lane Bryant and many many others. Mia has graced the covers and pages of numerous magazines and has appeared on countless television shows.

This past spring Mia was tapped to be the new Creative Editor-At-Large for Plus model magazine. Her first duty in her new role was to go toe to toe with the infamous Janice Dickinson on Oxygen’s, “Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.” Mia held her own knowing that she was standing up for the 62% of plus size women in the U.S.

Mia believes in stepping out on faith to realize her dreams and travels the country as a speaker at seminars for aspiring models.

 Mia Amber is represented by the Goddess Division of Model Service Agency as well as the commercial division of Innovative Artists in New York.

Events, Milwaukee: Donald J. Pliner at Boston Store Bayshore

Chicago-born Donald J. Pliner, that designer of footwear that is sexy but of wearable proportions, will be at Bayshore Boston Store tomorrow, May 7th, from 10am-3pm.  He’ll be showing his collection and providing consultations, discussing trends and – if you bring in your shoes or purchase a pair – will be signing.

This gives me impetus to dig out my gorgeous hot pink kitten heels with the butterfly string (it has just been too cold to wear them).

Mr. Pliner is also selling a logo shirt for $25 at this event where proceeds will benefit Donald Pliner’s Peace for Children Foundation.

See you in the shoe section!

Kate Middleton’s First Foray into Fashion Sells for $125k

Sometimes you have to show a little skin. This reminds boys of being naked, and then they think of sex. ~ Cher, Clueless

Sweet Kate Middleton, circa 2002.  It’s unclear if she was working this mantra for Prince William, who was sitting front row at the fashion show she was walking at St. Andrews where they were both attending.  Rumor has it she was dating someone else at the time, but this fiesty number caused the Prince to crane his neck and get a better look at the lovely.  Cher knows best!

A few days ago the student designer of this slip of a dress, Charlotte Todd, said she would never part with it – unless it was for an invitation to the wedding.  Turns out Cash is King as Todd put the dress up for auction where it sold for $125,871.

Todd, who has already experienced more success as a designer than most that try to pursue the profession, currently works at an aquarium.  She’ll no doubt enjoy her windfall, but I can’t help wondering why she didn’t wait until after the April 29th nuptials.  This piece is a unique bit of history to How I Met Your Princess.

Prada at TJMaxx

Apocalypse Now

Yep, that was me picking my jaw off the floor after I spotted these on my way out.  There were only three styles on display.  Is this a special line for TJMaxx?  Even I have limits. No, not my credit card (well yes, but) it’s just that that level of brand should stay on one of the internet auction house sites, IMO.  Does it bother you in the least?

Shane & Shawn Introduce City Smart Laptop Bags

Those twins have done it again. After successfully introducing the world to impossibly comfortable but fashionable shoes, Shane & Shawn broke out with a small handbag collection, mentioned during my interview with the brothers in 2009. They loved the process of expanding their line in a new direction, so when they were asked to created a series of laptop bags for Best Buy they enthusiastically went to work.

The Shane & Shawn ‘City Smart’ collection has launched exclusively at Best Buy in Soho (622 Broadway, NYC) and features four, full-grain leather bags designed for 15″-17″ laptops.  Eight different colors (black, brown, pink, red, silver, tan white and powder blue) and metal rivets fancy up the exterior with a soft felt inner lining.

If you are in New York you can pop on over to the Soho store or order by phone at 212-673-4067 or visit Shane & Shawn online.

Tom Ford: ss 2011

Finally, video of Tom Ford’s ss 2011 show. It’s a beautiful and edgy piece with super amped up Annie Hall outfits (think insanely sexy) and a bevy of celebrities strutting Ford’s stuff. Anything in particular you are coveting?

Stocking Stuffers: Ring Bling

Target has some amazing rockstar rings for work and for play.  Great detail, mirrors, and colors all just for $9.99 – but wait, there’s more!  They come prepackaged in little blue round boxes that can be hung from the stocking with care.  It isn’t Tiffany’s but it is fun.

Fashion’s Night Out NY 2010 – Get Your Tickets Here?

It’s open season during New York’s Fashion Week.

fno2010

New York is taking a page from reality and banking on massclusivity to help stimulate the economy.  This year, they’ll combine the couture allure of the invitation-only event of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and feature a runway show for Fashion’s Night Out.  With current season designs.  Say what?  That’s right. They’ll actually show Fall/Winter clothes during the appropriate season.  And,  also? You can buy tickets to the event.

Here’s how it works:

Fashion Week New York : September 9-16, 2010

The focus is always on the next season – fall shows feature spring/summer designs, winter shows feature spring/summer designs.  Designers get x number of invitations depending on the size of the show location they have rented, and designers extend invitations to the show.  This setup allows industry insiders to prepare for what is coming ahead, adjust for production, give magazines and other publications requiring long lead times a chance to get writeup the trends for subscribers.  Attendees, made up of media, buyers and starlets, are privy to the future looks of fashion. This is not a shopping model. The event is not open to the public.

Fashion’s Night Out:  September 10, 2010    Runway:  September 7, 2010

Last year’s effort focused on getting people back into the stores.  Launched by New York Mayor Bloomberg and Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour, the very public, shopping focused event was a welcomed, city-wide embrace of retailers courting the public.

This year, it will also be used to remind people to stay in the present.  1500 tickets will be made available at $25 a piece for attendees to view the trends projected at FW last February – trends filling the stores now.  The pieces, all selected by Vogue, were pulled to represent a cross-selection of trends to inspire shoppers’ wish lists for the main event on the 10th.  This event is open to the public.

As the world increasingly turns to Target for designer collections (even before the collapse of ’08), buries couture houses and kills off magazines in lieu of instant digital information, fashion needs more events like this to gain sure footing.  In the new media culture, a little inclusion goes a long way to creating loyalty.  A runway show based on the here and now of the fantasy world of fashion? Inspiring.

Sign up now for information on the worldwide event and be one of the first to get your tickets for the September 7th show. www.fashionsnightout.com

Philip Treacy Runway – Chicago

YouTube has extended their video time limit to 15 minutes so I am finally able to post this exclusive video of Philip Treacy’s invitation only show at Neiman Marcus in Chicago.  This is only his second time in Chicago.  Enjoy the show.

:I love so many of these designs!: Celebrity couture hat designer, Philip Treacy held an invitation only runway show at Neiman Marcus Chicago. Solessence was in attendance and brings you exclusive footage of the show that served as a kickoff for the Parkways Foundations 8th Annual Garden Party Luncheon. One of a kind hats were brought over from the UK by Treacy, and RTW styles were brought in from Neiman Marcus locations around the US.

My aunt’s father was a milliner and I’ve always been fascinated by the trade.

Chicago Events, Neiman Marcus: Celebrity Couture Milliner Philip Treacy

I’m still compiling info and video from the event, but check out the Interview section and, the file was too large for the site. Also, click to see the full Philip Treacy runway show at Neiman Marcus here.

Hat by Philip Treacy, Makeup by Billy B
philiptreacy_ladygaga

I’ve been invited to interview Philip Treacy, renown couture hat designer, during his visit to Chicago from the UK.  Breathless!

Mr. Treacy has created his sculptural works of art for Lady Gaga (whom just applied for an internship with him) as well as Sarah Jessica Parker, Madonna, Cher, Goldie Hawn  and British Royalty.  His handmade pieces are visually astonishing, and collaborations have been sought after by top design houses, including Donna Karan, Chanel, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Valentino and Helmut Lang.

Save the Dates – Must Attend!

Why is Philip Treacy in Chicago?  He’s participating in the kickoff launch party for the Parkways Foundation annual Garden Party hat luncheon taking place on September 16 in Grant Park.  More on that later.

Neiman Marcus is also bringing Philip in for a two-hour window where he will be signing his creations for anyone that has purchased from his collection.  He has also brought with him a limited number of one-of-a-kind designs will also be available.  This is tomorrow, May 20:

Gen Art Shuts Doors Due to Financial Strain

gen
genartIt doesn’t bode well for emerging fashion that this group loses sources of funding after 16 years of inspiration.
RIP.

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we are are posting this. After struggling for the past 18 months since the economic crisis, Gen Art has finally succumbed to the recession.

During this challenging time we did everything in our power to adjust our business to these new business realities by cutting costs and seeking out alternative funding solutions. However when a major, new, corporate partnership unexpectedly collapsed a few weeks ago, we found ourselves without sufficient resources or time to overcome this sudden and substantial loss of revenue. Their decision had the unintended effect of pushing Gen Art over the edge. We have now halted all operations, have let go all of our amazing staff, and shuttered the business that we hope was in some small way was as close to your heart – as it was ours.

We will be forever grateful for the support of so many individuals and corporate partners over the last 16 years who have believed in the vision and mission of this business. Whatever we have accomplished has been made possible through the hard work and dedication of the incredible Gen Art staff, interns and legions of volunteers who have given so much of themselves, their passion and their talents to the common causes of discovering and showcasing the new generation of talent.

It has been an incredible journey and experience.

We will always remember the good times and proudly think back on the opportunities created for so many emerging artists through the thousands of fashion shows, film screenings and festivals, live music performance, art fairs and competitions we have produced across the country since 1994.

We hope that where we have left off, others will step up to help fill the void.

Sincerely,
Ian & Stefan Gerard
Gen Art Founders

One of my fav girl crushes is the fun and fashionable jewelry designer, Wendy Brandes.  One day I will own something from her fabulous collection.  She’s got a great eye, works in lovely materials and has an interesting blog to boot.  Now she’s got some big screen love!

Look where her Nile earrings swing from:

Dove’s “Real Women Get Red Carpet Ready” Party

rcrA couple of weeks ago I hosted a “Real Women Get Red Carpet Ready” party, sponsored by Dove to get word out about the new Ultimate Visibly Smooth.  It was a blast!  There was a beautiful spread of Mediterranean foods, sushi and salmon, fruits, sparkling waters, sodas.

solessence_doveredcarpet_1And by me, I mean we, the amazing women I work with.  Peggy and the stylists that stayed to show their stuff rocked the night.

A second big shout out goes to the women that attended.  Real women.  Beautiful women.  Busy moms by day, they also share a passion for – oh, I won’t spoil it – you’ll have to watch the video.  But a great time was had by all.  The girls got their hair and nails did, the swag supplied was useful and loved (you’ll see).

The festivities were all captured on Flip supplied by Dove.

How real can you get?  These women were not afraid to be on camera sans makeup and hair done.  Comfortable beauty.

Thank you ladies and thank you Dove!

Oscars 2010: Sarah Jessica Parker aka SJP

sjp_oscars2010
Whenever I see rosettes, I always remember the episode of Project Runway where the Ohio fashion designer made little rosettes all over her ‘world traveler’ outfit, including butt pockets. She was laughed off of the show, but it only made me notice the little flowerettes popping up all over fashion.

This year the garden is coming mainstream. I have to admit I bought a very pretty blush top lined with rosettes – and was a little shocked to find them in force for the Oscars. SJP wore one of the more acceptable versions by Chanel Couture, in a soft yellow shade with chic gray/silver. However, the dress was ill-fitting and just not her normal knockout style. Baggy to no end, could she be hiding that fabulous figure because she’s knocked up? That’s one way to reason a stylist’s err of ways.

She’s Got the Look: Wella WOWS at Cynthia Rowley and DKNY

Bold pops of color were part of Fashion Week F/W 2010 runway hair designs at Cynthia Rowley and DKNY, courtesy of Wella.  Lead colorist Eva Scrivo shares how you too can get these looks come September:

CYNTHIA ROWLEY
The Look: A sleek, natural ponytail accented with the striking contrast of an artificial colored hair extension placed off center for an added tuft of textured fringe.
wella_rowley_mbfwff2010CynthiaRowleyRW661loresThe Hair Color: Wella Professionals Koleston Perfect Special Mix shades were used to completely saturate the natural hair extensions with rich, vibrant, jewel-toned shades of the collection. The sophisticated nuances of the Special Mix collection allow for creativity without limits – turning any color fantasy into a reality on the runway or in real life. The multi-dimensional tones and layers reveal sensuous colors in a range of shades, while embedded with an element of surprise.

The Products:

  • System Professional Ultimation: Strong-hold hairspray with long-lasting hold and maximum shine

cynthia_rowley_extensions12

Step-by-Step Styling

  1. 1. Section hair off and working from back of the head to the front, prepare hair with System Professional Ultimation hair spray for added texture and shine.
  2. 2. Create texture within each section by using a combination of a curling iron and crimping iron for non-uniform waviness.
  3. 3. Place Wella colored hair pieces that have been crimped within sections of the natural hair so that the extensions blend in seamlessly.
  4. 4. Pull the hair back into a soft ponytail at the nape of the neck with the ends flowing naturally, while allowing the streaks of color to show through for added dimension.

DKNY

The Look: A refined side-swept ponytail projects a sexy equestrian vibe with a subtly strong, yet not too masculine look.

wella_fw2010

The Hair Color: Using Wella Professionals’ new Blondor collection to achieve the palest of blondes, and both the Koleston Perfect permanent and Color Touch demi-permanent collections to create a gorgeous palette of naturals, handpainted extensions were created within the natural color palette of the models’ hair. The range reflects beautiful dimension in a variety of hues – from medium brown to a beautiful spectrum of blonde shades.

DKNYpalletteThe Products:

  • System Professional Volumagic: Natural hold styling foam for long-lasting volume
  • System Professional Hypercurl: Provides texture and definition to curl patterns

Step-by-Step Styling

  1. 1. Prepare damp hair with System Professional Volumagic and blow dry with a large round brush, creating a soft wave and giving direction for the side part.
  2. 2. Rake hands through hair to loosen the waves, pulling to the side of the part and fasten the low side ponytail.
  3. 3. Leave hair on the opposite side of the ponytail loose around the face to balance the asymmetry of the look.
  4. 4. Lightly smooth System Professional Hypercurl on the length of the ponytail for separation and added texture.

WWPD? – Pop17’s Sarah Austin

The WWPD (What Would Pros Do) segment gets in your face to find out what is on the faces of people who are on-camera for their profession. If the makeup is good enough for them, it is good enough for us!

“Hot and Not” video –  Polished, fresh, capped off with perfect nails

sarah_austin_pop17

Let’s talk about those fabulous nails! Are they real?

They are real. I have natural thick, long and strong nails.

Do you do your own nails or go to a salon?  What is your typical routine?

I go to a salon. My typical manicure is french with glitter. I only get the soft rainbow glitter or soft pink glitter. I only get silver or gold glitter on top if I’m going to Las Vegas.

SarahAustin

What are your favorite products/colors?

I like OPI the most. Light pink and fire engine red.

What is the look in your “Hot and Not” video?

My hot and not video look is going for that natural roll out of bed look, but in reality it took me a couple hours to achieve. It’s neat and natural. My make up is done by an artist at Benefit and my hair is done by the best stylist, Brooke, at DiPierto Todd salon in Mill Valley, CA.

The secret to great nails?

The secret to great nails is always carrying a nail file in your purse and filing them every day.

Kim Kardashian’s Shoe Dazzle

kimkardashian_shoedazzleAnd so it begins.  It is brilliant actually.  A shoe purchasing plan that gives to pumpophiles what Bag Borrow and Steal did for luxury handbag rental.  Except you get to own.

Kim Kardashian has found a way to address all of the shoe hungry women in the world by creating shoedazzle, a site that, for $40 a month, provides you with your own personal shoe stylist and a pair of shoes into yesteryear.  Here’s how it works:

  • Take a survey to determine your shoe type
  • A stylist will pick out five (5) pair for you
  • Select your first pair, you are charged and the ‘monthly membership society’ begins

Exchanges are free, and if you are quick enough on the trigger you can skip a purchase on the months you don’t want shoes.

There are definite pluses to this, but my main question is quality.  The shoes pictured looked very Payless.  There is nothing wrong with that, except you could probably get them for half the price in store.

shoedazzle_shoes_kardashian

I don’t fault KK for tapping into women’s desires for great footwear and, dare I say, the feeling of luxury in a time when people are scrimping and saving left and right.  But where the quality of luxury handbags was without question in the rental program, ShoeDazzle seems to be showing a lot of obvious pleather. For $40 I would probably enjoy the thrill of the hunt at Marshalls or TJMaxx where I could see the workmanship and try everything on for size.

What do you think of this program?  Have you purchased any of the shoes?

How Dior Decks the Halls by John Galliano

What does a Dior decked Christmas tree look like? A combination of icy & tropical scenes is made complete with leopard. The 20 foot Dior tree was created by John Galliano and launched with a cocktail party featuring 20 handpicked dresses from Dior’s archives. The tree will be on display in the Claridge Hotel lobby until January 6th. Behold:

galliano_diortree

I am thrilled that Dior is collaborating with Claridge’s this Christmas. I love to visit Claridge’s when I am in London, particularly at this time of the year – and I hope to bring a twist to the traditional tree. I want to combine the festive with the innovative, the spirit of Dior with the beauty of Claridge’s, and create something spectacular that will inspire the perfect start to the season!

Christian Lacroix Haute Couture House Folds

ChristianLacroix_2008

One of a handful of true haute couture houses left in the world, Christian Lacroix has been ordered today to close its custom dressmaking business in a restructuring plan.  After 22 years of high profile business, an icon of the fashion world, the label was still unable to turn a profit.  In 2008 the company rang up $45 million in sales, but lost $13.6 million.  The company is now stripped down to 11 employees.

It is a sad time for the fashion industry, but one we could see coming.  Gilles Montezin trained at the house of Lacroix and we discussed the imminent demise of haute couture this summer. Please click here to read the thoughts of this immensely talented artist and his views on where couture fashion is headed.

Lacroix will still operate licensed lines.

It was a beautiful time, and it was your time Mr. Lacroix!  Do not let this keep you down for long.

Baby’s Got Back – Rear End Enhancements

crownfoundations_fannyliftbriefWendy, 30, fills out her Apple Bottom jeans quite nicely, but not of her own device. “I use butt pads. Two of them!” she said giddily, as we all gaped at her backside. There were two big & beautiful cheeks, but how could this be?  She’s African-American, a heritage that is usually blessed in that department. Wendy insists she’s flat as a board without help. Ok, so she looks good with her clothes on, but does it interfere with the dating?

Sol: What happens when someone realizes your lovely lady lumps are not your own? Have you ever had any surprises?
W: I just tell him, “You want me to look good, don’t you?”

Wendy sources her build-a-butts from JC Penny and swears by them.  Foam inserts sewn into a girdle, she claims they fill her out as promised, are very comfortable to wear and are easy to clean.  She actually took orders for two and returned with the goods.  Here is a before & after shot of one of the girls modeling:

AFTER:

Due to some technical difficulties this file is sideways

Wanting to find yourself as the subject of a Sir Mix-A-Lot song?  Check out JC Penny ‘s Shapeware section for at least three different types to find the one for your build.

My Life In Pictures: 10 year Anniversary

antiguakiss_web The 8th celebrates 10 years of marriage for me and my long-suffering husband.  I can’t believe how fast it has gone by, and feel so blessed with our son.

Sorry, we aren’t supermodels!  I wanted to share this photo from that day.  With the turn of the century, gray was starting to come back into force (and remains strong 10 years later) and I wanted something different.  I was able to find some beautiful hand painted French silk  for the fishtail train and then hand sewn in crystal centers. It made for a lovely evening gown afterward.  Shockingly, I was able to find  matching shoes (which I am not wearing in the sand).

Did you design your own dress? I’d love to see your photos.  It was wonderful and a tear free-for-all at the same time.

My favorite detail about this photo is the cloud in the upper right.  I often ponder whether God was giving us the sign things would be A-Ok, or jokingly forming rabbit fingers.

Go out and love someone this weekend!

Exclusive Video: Gilles Montezin Bridal

gillesmontezinbridal
The women, the men, the dresses – there is too much eye candy in this video!  Nando was on the scene for Solessence at the Gilles Montezin Bridal showing.  If you remember from an earlier interview, Gilles mentioned his fabrics were “like frosting” and you will see how true and flowing and buttery the pieces are. Stunning workmanship. I need to get married again to wear a Montezin gown. Which one caught your eye? I love the fans and the back waterfall.

Gilles has another hit on his hands with Ugly Betty, creating a dress for their new season promos. His designs will be featured in Brides, The Knot, and Premiere Bride in 2010.

From Asia With Love – Converting a Kimono for a Modern Day Wedding

Bridal Fashion Week started on Sweetest Day, October 17th.

…when she suggested cutting every embroidered piece out and sewing them on, all I could think of was my old Girl Scout sash.

gretchenbourg_kimono
When Gretchen Bourg became engaged, she knew she would not be walking down the aisle in a plain white dress. Active with the Madison Ballet, her life as a dancer led her toward the dramatic. Her first choice? Something red. But when she stumbled upon an Osaka website for a business that converts traditional Japanese kimonos into modern formalwear, the idea for her wedding dress was born.
~~~
Gretchen, this all starts off when you were proposed to – Yay!
GB: Yay!
Normally someone would run to David’s Bridal, or any number of boutiques in town, but you did something different. You converted a vintage kimono into your wedding dress.
Uchikake_front
GB: As a dancer, I am naturally inclined to costumes and a more theatrical style. My husband is half Japanese and I’ve always really enjoyed the Asian esthetic. I threw out the idea of a traditional wedding gown and started to think about red, or other colors that inspired me. I happened upon a website as I was searching for Japanese customs, a company in Japan that takes kimonos and transforms them into formal wear. I took that idea to a seamstress locally and asked if she could do something like that for me. She had costume experience, and she was game, she was excited about it.
Can you discuss the importance of the kimono and the significance in using that for your wedding?
GB: The kimono I chose is called an Uchikake. It’s a kimono that is worn over another kimono, more like an outside robe or an obi. They date back thousands of years, but the kimono I ended up with is from the mid-Shōwa period. I had only received a vague description of the age of the kimono, so it’s probably somewhere between the 1920s to 1950-1960. I think the Shōwa period actually goes all the way to 1989. These very elaborately embroidered kimonos are used on the outside, a dressing robe for the bride. They were just so gorgeous and had so many colors and patterns that were so inspiring, I thought it would be a really nice way to combine our marriage. An East meets West feeling in my wedding dress.
Did you have a long search to find the piece?
GB: The Japanese company had a lot of information on the website, and a number of styles of gowns. I figured I would pick the colors I liked and have the seamstress help me out. I was ordering it from a company in Osaka, over Ebay, there are tons of them on Ebay. It was really inexpensive. It was about $78 and about the same for shipping, and I got a kimono in the mail a week later. There were a few stains, but it was beautiful. As soon as I got it I thought it was perfect, exactly the colors I wanted. The background I hadn’t anticipated, it was white. I was still aiming for a red dress but I loved it immediately.
Uchikake_back
I think that is actually more fitting to transform that into a Western style. White is unusual. How is that feeling to finally see it, and then the thought of having to convert that into a dress?
GB: It was a slight panic. A sort of, “What was I thinking?”, “Did I really have this happen?”, “Would people think I was crazy?”. I wasn’t too concerned about the latter, because it was my wedding dress. But I was a little concerned. The company I got the dress from is Ichiroya, and they sell tons and tons of kimonos. They had detailed the stains, but actually getting this huge kimono, I thought it was so gorgeous, but it was only the beginning of nervousness in how to deal with it. I had to bring it to the seamstress and we had a lot of speedbumps in trying to get this into a dress. We really couldn’t go with Plan A or B, we had to go with Plan C.
You mean with the final style?
gretchenbourg_kimonowedding
GB: Yes. On the site I had seen, many of the gowns were fitted, so they didn’t require a lot of fabric. I didn’t really think of that when I envisioned my dress, which was a fitted bodice and a very full ball gown. My seamstress took one look at it and said, “We don’t have enough fabric.” Being a great, ingenious seamstress, she said we could try to add fabrics into the kimono and piece it together. Ultimately she made a silk gown out of fabric I purchased and she appliquéd every single piece from the kimono onto the gown. It ended up being a happy accident, because we were able to place the elaborate pieces where we wanted. There are branches and flowers and pagodas on the original, and by adding them on we were able to highlight favorites and avoid some potentially awkward placements by some flowers and things.
It was definitely a leap of faith. I had this wonderful seamstress that I felt completely comfortable in her hands. But when she suggested cutting every embroidered piece out and sewing them on, all I could think of was my old Girl Scout sash. I was really concerned it would look very homemade, or quilted, or something. She just did an outstanding job. You would never know it wasn’t the original fabric.
gretchenbourg_kimonoback
How long did the process take?
GB: We started around May, maybe April, and the wedding was at the end of August, so it took a few months. There was quite a bit of embroidery and appliqué that she had to do on the backend of things that she didn’t anticipate, but to be working on this type of project, I think she thought it was worth it.
How did your husband feel about all of the effort?
GB: He was absolutely stunned and pleased. He knew not to expect a white gown from me, but I never let on. My Japanese mother-in-law was very flattered.
Was she in on the secret?
modern_kanzashiGB: No, she wasn’t. I tried to keep it a secret even from my friends. I thought it would be fun to surprise everyone by not wearing a traditional gown. This was also fun; I worked on my own headpiece. It was inspired by a Geisha’s headpiece, called a Kanzashi, and almost fabric origami. They are either hairsticks or combs. I made my own version, and it was fun to play with that modern day Geisha experience.
Would you recommend this experience then?
GB: I would if you have a great seamstress. This was definitely a two way street, and we talked a lot about what I wanted, and she talked about what she needed. The afternoon we did the appliqué it was about three hours worth just to place the pieces. But it was really fun designing my own wedding dress and having something so original and unique. I would encourage anyone to think outside of the box. Wedding dresses don’t need to be boring.
Claiborne to Move Collections to JC Penny, QVC Exclusive
What has happened to JC Penny? The company is on a fast track to makeoverville. First, the casual installation that started a few years ago of adding Sephora centers within select stores to offer upscale cosmetic centers. The latest news? They are getting the exclusive on Liz Claiborne & Claiborne brands for Unites States and Puerto Rico distribution.
Isaac Mizrahi for Liz Claiborne
These brands that once graced the aisles of Macy’s and the like will be a higher end line at JC Penny but still within their “better/best pricing” category. JC Penny will be picking up approximately 30 merchandise categories, which includes men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, shoes and home, and have an option to own the licensed trademarks after the end of the ten (10) year run.
Myron E. (Mike) Ullman, III, chairman and chief executive officer of JCPenney said: “Liz Claiborne is one of the most recognized brands in the history of American apparel retailing with a deeply loyal following, and our research shows that it is among the most desired by the JCPenney customer. In capitalizing on each of our strengths, this agreement brings huge benefits to both companies by giving our customers a substantially expanded Liz Claiborne offering at a more accessible price point than ever before.”
The Dana Buchman and Axcess brands will continue to be sold exclusively at Kohl’s (headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin).
Higher end label Liz Claiborne New York is also making a change to take advantage of distribution through QVC. The line, designed by Isaac Mizrahi, will have one last Holiday 2009 collection in department stores.
Isaac Mizrahi said: “The opportunities for the Liz Claiborne New York brand inherent in this new distribution strategy with QVC are thrilling for me. It affords us the ability to elevate the brand and effectively balance the collection so that we are able to maximize its sales potential. It is exciting for me to link my relationship with Liz Claiborne and my relationship with QVC, together we will revolutionize the way a brand builds and provides a direct voice to the customer.”
As the economy changes the world of fashion and beauty, these partnerships are likely to become more common. Kudos to those on board at JCP and Claiborne for actively seeking ways to survive, even improve their brand experience for consumers in this economy. Due to the strategic agreement, Liz Claiborne Inc is expected to move away from an adjusted operating loss for 2009 to targeted adjusted operating profit in 2010. Survival is the name of the game.
I admit, I hadn’t been in JC Pennys for years until the opening of a Sephora a year or two ago. I was pleasantly surprised at how updated the styles were. Recently I picked up a necklace that has quickly become a a favorite. While I paid $11 for it, there is apparently an expensive Lia Sophia twin that it is mistaken for. Are you a big JC Penny or Claiborne fan? What do you think of the current changes?
Someday my Shoes will Come: Champagne Louboutins Oct 26
Is there a woman alive that can resist this combination?
heel_louboutin
Christian Louboutin and Piper-Heidsieck join forces to release a special Louboutin branded Champagne. Why? Because the holiday season is coming. Is the shoe actually wearable or just for drinking out of? No word, but while I am instantly in love, I hope this doesn’t mean they start going down the “brand everything that moves, and brand it anyway if it doesn’t” Ed Hardy route. Keep it Klassy, Christian!
Coveting a pair? They become available on October 26 via French site Colette.
Simply Vera Wang Steel Grey Towel hits Kohls
simplyverawang_towels(color not shown)
Vera Wang is finally getting her way.
After a three year discussion with Kohls, the department store she collaborates with on her Simply Vera Wang line, Ms. Wang will finally be introducing the Steel Grey towel line she has desired for so long.
No word on why Kohls was hesitant.  However, the release comes at a time where grey is the hottest color of the season, and it will continue to carry through spring.
Grey towels add a touch of luxury to cool colored bathroom decor and work well for both sexes.  Grey does have a tendency to go violet over time, but using a color guard in your detergent will help maintain the beauty in the dyes of all of your fabrics. It is a good practice to get into for all of your laundry.
The Steel Grey Towel Simply Vera Wang line is hitting stores now. Call ahead to make sure it has arrived in the location near you.
This isn’t the only towel project that has been close to Vera Wang’s heart.  Coming up, another multi-year project is green lighted – but we can’t divulge on that yet. You’ll be the first to know when we can share.
Clinton Kelly: From Fashion Editor to Fashion Police
clintonk
I’m all about the experience. ~ Clinton Kelly
From Fashion Editor to Fashion Police, stylist Clinton Kelly has seen it all – and his eyes are burning! He sits down to discuss the current state of fashion, his Make Over America tour and the search for Worst Dressed American.
Is it you?
clinton_cover
Where does fashion currently rule & why: New York or LA?
Having just returned from a week in LA, I can tell you with absolute certainty that NY rules, fashionwise. The vast majority of American designers use NYC as their home base, and fashionable New Yorkers tend to take more chances than their LA counterparts. That’s not to say that there’s a style deficiency in LA; it’s just that I found most people in the Hollywood scene to be lacking a little in creativity. Still a lot of bleached blondes with fake boobs and hair extensions. And if I saw another guy in an Ed Hardy T-shirt, I thought I would puke. Downtown LA seems to be where it’s at as far as fashion goes.
You are about 1/2 way through to your Make Over America tour with Macys. How are things going?
You have no idea how much I’m loving this tour across America, which resumes shortly. In each city I make over 15 women — all different ages and shapes and sizes — and use them as models in a fashion show. There is nothing quite like watching a woman who came to me looking like a frump-a-dump on Friday strut her gorgeous stuff in front of a thousand cheering people on Saturday. And it looks like we’ll be extending the tour through 2010. We’re working on a list of cities for that now. In the meantime, you can go to macys.com/makeoveramerica to stay informed.
You’ve been a very positive spokesperson for Macys. How did that relationship come about?
Back when I was a magazine editor, I had made many contacts in the PR world. One day about four years ago, one of those contacts called me about hosting some style seminars for Macy’s in what are called “special sizes” in the industry, meaning pluses and petites. I jumped at the chance because I believe very strongly that every woman can look and feel beautiful with the right amount of information and a little inspiration. The Macy’s customer has obviously responded to this because I’m going on my fifth year of working with the company. I love it so much, I hope it never ends.
How did you get into this field, and on television? Was it an end goal?
Six years ago (or so) TLC was re-casting the male lead of WNTW and a casting agent named Barbara Barna contacted me. I think she had contacted every man working in the fashion industry. I was working as the executive editor of a very highly regarded men’s fashion trade magazine called DNR at the time. It has since been folded into Women’s Wear Daily. I decided to go on the audition because I figured I had nothing to lose by doing so. When it was over I thought, “Wow, I just bombed that.” But I really didn’t care because I already had a good job. The next day, they called me back for a second audition, where I met Stacy and we had chemistry from the first instant. A week later, I had quit my job and was signed on to do 45 episodes. Crazy! Was doing TV an end goal? Good question. Not really. I’m all about the experience. I wanted to try something new, so I did. Every job I ever accepted, I did so because I thought it would either be fun or I would learn a new skill. With WNTW, both have been true.
The wildly popular What Not to Wear is coming up on 250th episode. Let’s talk about the “Worst Dressed American” you are hunting down.
Well, it’s not so much that I’m hunting her down. It’s the producers really. I can’t even imagine someone who dresses worse than the people we’ve already had on the show. I feel like I’ve re-styled the worst dressed American about a hundred times already. But if you know someone, you can go to TLC.com and nominate them or yourself. It’s such an honor that the American public — and people from other countries for that matter — have embraced WNTW so wholeheartedly. It’s fun to be me! When I walk down the street, people tell me they love me or love my work. It’s hilarious. Sure, they also ask me what I think of their outfits, and believe me, if you ask, you’re gonna get the truth!
Do you ever get tired of the hot mess, or does it only motivate your mission?
I do get a little tired of the frumpy mom look, only because there are polished alternatives that are just as easy. Instead of sweatshirts and hoodies, wear a cotton jacket. Instead of faded, tapered jeans, get a dark wash trouser jean. Instead of T-shirts, wear a blouse. And instead of sneakers, wear a sandal, ballet flat or boot. This is not rocket science. I feel sometimes like I’ll be giving this advice until I’m 103.
Looking at the stunning array of 15 styles, I asked Amy Snyder Hackbart if she would provide a few tips for getting swimsuit sexy. Amy came back with something even better – a “Love Yourself” guide, a reminder that being fit by being healthy is the sexiest look of all.
Styles, L to RIsabelle, Murango, Parker
Love Yourself Enough to Embrace Your Assets
  • No one loves everything about their body. It’s true. Whether young, old, famous, infamous, thin, not-so-thin – EVERY woman has something about themselves they don’t like. Accept that this is okay and that you are not alone in your dissatisfaction about whatever body part it is, and you’ll feel better about yourself – truly you will.
  • Find one part of yourself you are satisfied with. Once you’ve made peace with your imperfections, it is kind of nice to also find at least one thing about yourself you like. It could be your toes, or your hair, or your waist or your shoulders, but find something and then focus on it. Lavish praise upon this part you like– and maybe slowly you can become friends with the other parts that aren’t your favorites.
  • Enhance the parts you like. Learn to dress to enhance the part or parts you like best. This is true at work, play, at the beach or in the snow. There are SO many designs and styles of apparel available, there is certain to be a dress, shirt, skirt or swim suit style that helps you enhance the parts you like so you feel better about yourself as you are today. Once you gain the confidence that comes from showing off what you like about yourself, deciding to take care of the rest of you seems only natural.
Styles, L to RJayne, Hope, Sophia
Love Yourself Enough to Eat Right
  • Give up Fast Food. Period. There is no such thing as healthy fast food. It is as empty a calorie as cookies and chips only with tons of fats, preservatives and fillers. You deserve better, so eat that way!! Shower yourself with fresh fruits, nuts, lean meats, fish, veggies, cheese (yes cheese!) and you won’t miss that nutritionally deficient fast food filler.
  • Clean out your cupboards. Like cleaning out your closet of clothes you no longer wear, cleaning out your cupboard of chips, cookies, cakes, pies, pretzels etc. will help you stay on track. Instead replace these nutritionally empty snack foods with better choices. Since no one is perfect, if you do get the urge to splurge, try to limit your intake of these types of foods to ‘special occasion’ single serving sizes – and try to eat just one.
  • c. Drink water or tea instead of juice, soda or alcohol. By keeping your body well-hydrated, you are allowing it to operate with maximum efficiency allowing you to burn more calories and digest foods more efficiently. Hydration is crucial, but what you use to keep hydrated is just as important – fruit juices, alcohol and even soda are full of sugars that your body metabolizes as FAT. Diet soda is just as bad – it is all chemicals that still cause your body to read the artificial sweeteners as sugar that create FAT. Get bored of water and tea? Buy naturally flavored sparkling water, or buy plain and flavor it yourself with lemons, limes, berries, apples and other fruits.
    Styles, L to RCalient, Serena, Shine
    • Eat more foods that are plant-based. Fruits, vegetables and nuts, should be a big part of your daily menu. They taste best when they are freshest (even frozen is okay, just not canned – too many preservatives and sugary syrups). They make you full faster and help your skin, hair and nails look better.
    • Had enough on food changes? Not sure you can make them all? That’s okay, just do your best each day, keep track of what you eat and make sure each of your three meals (skipping meals equals a slow metabolism) include fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein and no fast food or snack foods!
    Love Yourself Enough to Exercise
    • Exercise 30 minutes a day 3 times a week. Even 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week can make a big difference in how you look and feel. Maintaining a healthy pace as you walk, jog or ride your bike will get your heart rate up and blood flowing.
    • Add some weight. No, not put on weight, but ADD weights to your workout routine. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so ideally you want to build as much muscle as possible to turn your body into a top notch calorie burner. Small hand weights of 3-5 pounds used regularly whether for bicep curls, lunges or squats make you work harder and help you build muscle as you burn calories. It’s a proven, powerful combination that really helps get you results.
    • Park as far away as possible. This is the easiest way to get exercise I know. Parking far from the entrance of where you work or shop gives you the opportunity to squeeze in some extra exercise! It helps you get the extra steps that add up to the 30 minutes of exercise you need 3 times a week. Walk at a brisk pace, and you’ll be boosting your metabolism as you burn more calories. Plus, there are always parking spots!
    Styles, L to RCabana, Mirage, Madiera
    • Take the stairs wherever and whenever possible. This is the second easiest way to get exercise! Waiting in line for the escalator or elevator isn’t nearly as fun as trying to beat everyone up or down using the stairs. The added bonus is it is a great lower body (hips/thighs/butt) work out.
    • At work, or when studying, get up and walk around. Lots of us have jobs that require us to sit behind a desk for 8+ hours a day. By taking little breaks and walking around for a few minutes (like to the bathroom because you’ve been drinking water throughout the day) helps you feel more awake and feel better.
    Styles, L to RAztec, Twiggy, Chile
    • Hate the idea of a ‘work out’? Get bored at the thought of the gym or weights? The key to exercise is to move your body for at least 30 minutes. Dance, swim, bike, hike, skateboard, roller skate, volleyball, tennis – the list of options is endless. Try them all till you find one or two you like and, as Nike says, ‘just do it!’ You’ll look and feel better in no time!
Say Yes to this Dress – Couture Designer Gilles Montezin for Kleinfeld Bridal
Don’t miss the exclusive video of Gilles’ bridal launch here
gillesmontezin_dress
“Every little stitch that I do, every pleat that I make…I am always thinking of ways to make someone’s dream dress…”
– Gilles Montezin
This interview is transcribed from Solessence Radio.
Today we have couture designer Gilles Montezin. In this new phase to his career, he leaves behind a trail of couture clothing from movies Sex and the City & Confessions of a Shopaholic to design couture bridal for Kleinfeld. His trademark ‘Le Cinch’ corset helps brides take up to 4″ off of their waistline for the happy day. Let’s bring him on the line to find out how it all started.
When did you first get the idea you wanted to be a designer?
I asked my mother when I was a teenager to do a jacket for me. She started, and I finished it. She was very, very proud of me, and I felt it was very rewarding. I thought it was fun, so I started doing clothes for my friends, and they liked it.
You had no prior training at all?
I have a technical mind, and I guess I have the facility to understand what to do, so it was kind of easy.
So then as time progressed, you obviously decided to go to school for this. What helped you select where you going to go?
I get bored easily, let’s say, so I started to do fashion designing, and I worked a lot with fashion industry and theatre and opera. After a while I wanted to do more, and I moved to Paris to study haute couture, which is the highest level of craftsmanship for making clothes. I started working for Christian Lacroix, who is a very, very nice man, and that was it. I was ready to do whatever I wanted to do; I had all the tools that I wanted.
Did it seem like this was it? It just all clicked. It was going to happen?
It was kind of a dream, you know? The school I went to, they only take 10 students a year, and they’re coming from all over, from everywhere around the planet. It is extremely hard to get in. So it is kind of a dream that you are moving closer and closer, and after a while you are there, and it just happens. But it still is a dreamy experience all the way through.
During your time training there, I’m sure they had really creative and fantastic projects to keep you stimulated. Was there one thing in particular that had an impact for you?
One thing I always wanted to do was achieve three-dimensional projects on a mannequin. I was trained to do more designing and more ready-to-wear, which you create with pattern, paper flat on a table. In haute couture I was trained to do clothes on a mannequin, so you have the results right there on the spot, and you can correct it and you can create all of that volume that you cannot do just by doing a pattern. That, to me, was a big, big, big achievement. I was finally able to do something other than everyday clothes – and that was very, very exciting.
So then you are done with school, you have the tools you need. What was your next step?
When I was in school I was working for the opera, Opera de Bastille, and it was fantastic working on all of those costumes, and learning the techniques of previous centuries that you still apply in doing the costumes for the singers. After, when I finished school, I was hoping to go and work for some haute couture houses, whether it was Dior or Gaultier or Lacroix. Lacroix was my favorite, so I was really, really aiming to get to that, the chance to work with him.
What are your feelings on the state of the industry today? It seems many of the houses, there are few that are true couture houses, the number is very small, I think five. But with the economy the way it is, if they are not closing up they certainly have to change business model. You were in at a great time to experience it.
Haute couture, I am very sorry to say this, and I hope I am wrong, but haute couture will probably die the same way as it was born. That is, slowly and slowly, and growing up and it will die just the same way. It is an extremely high level to make clothes. It is very experimental, it is very, very demanding work and craftsmanship and the creation of a dress/coat/suit, whatever it is, is extremely demanding. Not everyone can afford to work, and not everybody can afford to buy haute couture, of course. So it’s the state of art, of making clothes, that is probably very temporary. I wish I am wrong, I wish it is going to last, because it is a very exuberant way of making clothes, very experimental. And you don’t see that anywhere else. You don’t see that in shops, or a regular store, that quality of clothing. It is always enjoyable to look and feel the haute couture clothing.
The skills you acquired then, going back to your life track, at what point did you decide to branch off on your own?
Once again it was when I felt I had tools that I can work with, and in Paris I thought it was time to see if I can start something on my own, and that was it.
You just jumped. You moved to New York. Sometimes that’s the best way to do it or it doesn’t happen.
Yes, I think you’re right (laughs).
So you did move to New York, and were discovered in a sense. Pat Field had seen your creations and pulled pieces for Sex and the City and Confessions of a Shopaholic movies. That’s pretty huge. What was it like to be involved in that process?
Oh it is fantastic, another dream come true. Pat Field has tremendous talent in styling and creating looks for the girls and even the crew. It is a fantastic experience – a big machine, and people were very professional. They are appreciative and it was very rewarding to see how they put clothes together – where they use it, and for who. It’s really a big surprise and a big game and fun.
Now you’re transitioning. You have two big movies behind you, and your future is leading into bridal.
Yes! (laughs)
It actually seems perfect for you because of these beautiful, grand designs that you make. How did that come about?
I think you are right, it is perfect for me because I like to create volume, and I like to keep clothes at a beauty level as much as I can. I think it suites me perfectly, I adore doing it very much. Apparently it is pleasing too, so let’s go for it.
Just a little background, Kleinfeld Bridal is a very famous shop in New York City. People come from all over the world to shop here, designers come from all over the world to design for Kleinfeld, to try and get in. This is the shop featured on Say Yes to the Dress show on TLC. Had you done bridal prior to Kleinfeld?
No, what happened, my open door to them, was they came to my workshop one time and selected gowns for their evening department. After a while I said, “Listen, I would like to explore the possibility of doing wedding gowns.” Mara Urshel, owner, took me into her office, and we had a very long conversation. She is the most adorable person on earth, she is fantastic. She gave me all of the ropes of the trade. She told me everything to do and everything not to do, what the brides are expecting, what they don’t like. I felt like I was taught the whole world of bridal at that very special moment. I went back to my workshop and started drawing dresses, and they selected (three). So that is how it started. They are responsible for me doing bridal now.
It seems like such a natural transition.
Well I was brought up to that point, and I was really well cared for. She really wanted me to have all the best information on bridal gowns. She was very, very generous on her knowledge.
They’ve selected three. Discuss the initial designs. Were these the three you would have picked?
You know, I was more interested on getting the “why” of the styles they picked, because they selected thinking of what the bride would look like in them.
The photos are beautiful of the gowns. Can you describe them?
One is in taffeta with a voluminous skirt. It has pleating that creates long lines on the body that goes down to the skirt. Another has pleated lace, which is a little bit see-through, reminiscent of lingerie. You can see a bit of a bustier, and it is very flattering, very sexy too, but it remains elegant. The third one is more Grecian. It is flowing chiffon, falling from one shoulder to the hip.
Let’s discuss Le Cinch. Is this built into every dress? This is something new you are introducing.
Yes, that is the result, once again, of the interview I had with Mara Urshel. We came up with the idea of cinching the waist a little more in bridal gowns so the silhouette is more define. Since I worked with Lacroix and I was doing all of the bustiers under the dresses and I was working at the Opera in Paris, and I made all of those fantastic corsets. I’m very knowledgeable about making them. So I came up with the idea of making a very mini-corset that you can put under the dresses. It would remain very comfortable, and it would help to cinch the waist, giving it a little oomph, that a bridal gown needs to take it to the next level.
Yes, that’s what the girls like!
Yes, that’s what the girls like, that is what I was told! That is what Mara told me. When she realized what I was doing she was, “I think you are onto something now.” That was very, very rewarding for me.
It is built into the dress. Is that removable at all?
It is removable. You can wear it or decide not to wear it or remove it to wear with your favorite dress after.
That’s another bonus. A very unique concept.
It is. And it remains very comfortable because it is a short bustier, it doesn’t compress the ribcage, which makes you very uncomfortable. Unable to breath, you have all of those bad feelings when your ribcage is compressed. Le Cinch, the corset I put in, does not do that. It is very localized on the waist, and for most of the people, the waist is very flexible. You just put your hands on the waist, on each side, push in and it is just like you are wearing my corset.
I want to talk about sizing, because Le Cinch is a boon for skinny girls as well as larger sizes, because everyone wants to look as thin as they can on their wedding day. At a time when other designers are pulling out from plus sizing, you are offering up to size 18.
It goes to size 18, and for larger sizes we just need to make sure we have the figure down, to make sure we build up the dress accordingly.
Is that standard in the shop to accommodate?
I just feel confident this is something flattering and adaptable to every silhouette, every size. Corsets have been around for 400 years, it is not a novelty. It is just a question of how to build it, and once you know how to build it, it can be adapted to everybody.
Women will be thrilled with that.
I hope so.
What about materials? Can you give us a little insight into fabrics you are using?
I’m very lucky I have found fantastic fabrics. I do work with very traditional fabrics; silk taffeta and silk satin. But I found fantastic organza and silk chiffon that has a satin face. They are just so generous; you want to bite in it. It is like whipped cream. It is fantastic to work with. I count myself very lucky.
What would you say is your overall design philosophy for this bridal line? What is your goal to make the bride look and feel like?
I think you’ve touched the very core of my questioning doing wedding gowns. I think it is almost an obsession, every little stitch that I do, every little pleat that I make, I am asking myself, “Is this going to be somebody’s bridal dress? Is this going to be a dress that someone will say – ‘This is my dream dress’?” I am always thinking of ways to make someone’s dream dress, and it is very exciting and very nerve-wracking at the same time. You want to do something that is beautiful, but since you personally don’t know the customers it is a little bit hard to touch right in the middle of the target. It is a very fun game of making things that are going to please and guessing what is going to please at the same time.
When & where can we see the line?
We are negotiating possibility of showing in a professional showroom. The deal is pretty much done but we are finalizing the contract. Also we are showing at my workshop, by appointment only, of course. I also hope Kleinfeld will come and want to work with the rest of the collection. We also have the collection online at www.gillesmontezin.com (please use contact page on website for inquiries).
How many dresses total will you showing?
We expect to be showing between 15-18 designs.
Have you stopped your ready to wear?
No, I still have clients ordering the rtw collection. It is just on standby for now, because each is so demanding. I am focusing on the bridal launch.
Diamond Nexus Labs: Making History with 2009 Miss Universe
peacecrown “He (Donald Trump) actually chose us…” ~Diamond Nexus Labs
Today’s guest is Brianne Smith, representing Diamond Nexus Labs in Franklin, Wisconsin.
Let’s talk about the crowns. Diamond Nexus Labs created the crowns for Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and now Miss Universe.
Yes we did. Miss USA and Miss Teen USA have already passed, but we did make the crowns for those two pageants. And we’re very excited about the Miss Universe pageant.
Can you start in the beginning and tell us how you got involved with that?
We are based in Franklin (WI) and started around 5 or 6 years ago. We are the world leader in lab created precious gemstones, so pretty much you are getting the same look as a mined diamond. You’re just not getting a blood diamond, and you’re not hurting the environment. We’re trying to save the environment and we’re going green and eco-friendly. There are a lot of good benefits to what we do. We also save (the consumer) a ton of money, which is always good.
Mikimoto, a huge name in jewelry, had designed the previous crowns.
Mikimoto, even Tiffany, has done the crown. One of our customers is part of the Donald Trump organization. He has bought our products before, he loves our products and what we stand for, and he took it to Donald Trump himself. Donald Trump said, “You know? Why not.” So he actually chose us, and we are the first eco-friendly company in history to design the crown for the Miss Universe organization. It is a huge honor for us, especially being from small town Wisconsin.
You did something unique for the Miss Universe crown. You allowed people from all over the world to vote on three different designs. How did that decision come about.
It’s called Choose the Crown, (www.choosethecrown.com) and you can vote for your favorite design. The crown will be revealed Sunday.
So all three models have been completed and the winning crown will be revealed with the winner of the pageant. Will anyone from Diamond Nexus be on location?
The CEO is there, and our Director of Marketing. The Miss Universe pageant is in the Bahamas and they’ll be on location representing Diamond Nexus Labs.
You have a video on your site that shows the progression of the designs. How did your designers feel working on this project?
Well it’s a huge honor for them. They were a little overwhelmed with the Miss USA crown, and then to do the Miss Universe crown, which reaches the entire world – it is a huge, huge honor just to have designed one crown.
Do you have future plans to expand product line or future stores?
Sure, we do plan to expand next year and will be popping up around the country.
Let’s talk about styles that are really popular now. We’re easing into fall. How do styles change, what are you focusing on now?
Part of what we do is engagement rings and bridal sets. That’s still number one in the store. A lot of people are now moving on to the lab created, based on the ethical reasons behind it, going green, saving the environment. Now with the economy, saving money is huge. We have a lot of couples coming in and buying the sets. Right now I would say the vintage/antique style is very popular, which we have a large collection in the store.
In terms of settings, and do you also do the antique cuts like Cushion cut?
Sure, we have all cuts. The Asher cut is also very popular with the vintage style. It brings back that classic look, that antique look, and that’s very popular.
What’s one of your favorite pieces?
I actually wear a ring called the Athala, and it is part of that antique/vintage style. That’s personally one of my favorites, that’s why I wear it.
Can you tell me a little bit about your experience getting into Diamond Nexus Labs? Were you in jewelry before?
I worked for a natural-mined jewelry store before I moved over to Diamond Nexus. I managed a store and Diamond Nexus started to branch out into the retail world. I believe whole-heartedly in what they do and stand behind what they do, and thought it would be a good move for me. I manage the retail store, and the store has been open almost a year now. I have been with the company for a year and managing ever since.
It’s been an exciting time for you.
Yes it has, it has been a very exciting year. Very exciting.
We should mention the store is located in Mayfair Mall.
Yes, down from Panera (in the main, center entrance). Or you can shop www.diamondnexuslabs.com online. And we are renovating the site and our store, going for a more green, eco friendly look.
Congratulations to Diamond Nexus Labs for the winning Peace design, and to Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez.
Meeting Tim Gunn (yummy!)
One of the biggest highlights of BlogHer was meeting Tim Gunn of Project Runway. My intro to meeting him went something like this:
TG:That is a fabulous cardigan! (Fingering it) What’s the label?
S: (Crap! Who is it by? No offense Target, but I hope I’m not wearing Merona today) Thank you. I can’t remember.
TG: Do you mind if I look?
S: (breaking a sweat – I think I remember getting this at Macy*s. Boston Store?)
And with that he went to my side and stuck his hand down my back while he fished around for the tag.
TG: Laura Ashley!
S: Not a floral to be found on it.
TG: And that’s a good thing.
I think those commercials with Martha Stewart are influencing him.
But aside from being a total label wh0re, WYSIWYG. This impeccably dressed man is exactly as portrayed on TV. Tall & handsome, he almost looks like a work of art. He is so congenial too.
I asked him how he happened into the field of fashion, and he said,
“I actually thought I was going to be many other things when I grew up.”
He went through quite a list of jobs, but dreaming of being a pianist and architect came up multiple times. Isn’t it funny how life can bring us around to doing things we’d never dreamed of? He just seems so perfect as a spokesperson.
Yes, these are actually Tim Gunn trading cards this woman’s husband made for her. And Tim signed them.
Mr. Gunn’s appearance was made possible by Tide®, but the all® fairies (competition) took advantage and were spotted handing out samples of product and chocolate stars.
A Good Read: Schiaparelli Shocking – the original Gaultier bottle
When John Paul Gaultier first came out with his line of “corset” perfumes, they looked all too familiar. That’s because two Elsa Schiaparelli bottles have sat on my dressing table since high school, passed on to me by my incredibly fashionable aunt.
As someone interested in design, I instantly fell in love with the dress forms the bottles were mimicking. If you look closely at the smaller bottle, there is actually a measuring tape, and seal underneath. The large bottle had been full of the signature scent Shocking. During a move, it opened, corroding the flowers and ruining the tape. Ah well, it is still lovely.
I love everything about these bottles. The beauty of the forms. The glass and enamel leaves and flowers. The embossed lace design. The velvet lining. The smaller bottle still has the stand, it is just not attached in the photo. The underside is shocking pink. They’ve got some wear because they were used, but they represent a time when beautiful detailing was crucial to packaging, not a project cost killer. Oh the thrill to touch the throat with the golden, glass stopper. This is part of the experience a simple spritz cannot match.
Schiaparelli was Coco Chanel’s biggest competitor, and was known for bringing fashion to the masses. After the war, her perfumes sold particularly well, but the downfall to her line was that it was easily copied. I don’t know if this is the case, but I’ll give Gaultier the benefit of the doubt and cast his line as a tribute.
If you’d like a good read, check out this designer who pushed the creative envelope for fashion. If you’re a fan, give Schiaparelli a shout out!
Crocs about to go extinct
Free falling from a 2007 fiscal year profit of $168.2 million to 2008 loss of $185.1 million, Crocs are nearing extinction.
In a classic example of too much, too fast, the company expanded in multiple locations worldwide to meet sales demands – 100 million pairs in 6 short years. In a waning economy, and perhaps total market saturation, sales have plummeted. Factories and shipping locations that were shoring up now stand empty.
John Duerden replaced Ron Snyder as CEO this year, and believes Crocs have a revival in niche markets for medical, catering and people with troubled soles. It is rumored George Clooney will be on board to rep the shoes.
Does the company really stand a chance? Growing too fast is almost more deadly than no growth.
The image overhaul may not help. One reason Crocs went where others did not is that they were able to entice men and children to buy. I’ve seen this new style on and have to admit, they were pretty attractive. But decidedly feminine.
By fall, Crocs, with the popularity of Beanie Babies, could just be another chapter of plastic shoe history to add to Jellies. Do you wear them? Would you miss them?
Blinded by the Light: Anti-Paparazzi Clutch Bag
Designer Adam Harvey is releasing a limited edition clutch bag that could be the end all for Harvey Levine meal tickets.
The Anti-Paparazzi Clutch contains a patent pending device that sends a flash of light when detecting another camera flash. The user can use the purse to shield the face and effectively wipe out any possible photos.
Of course, this only works at night, you have to have a quick hand, you don’t want to grab the wrong clutch when you are needing to have a quick pic, say at the Ivy or Chow (however, the device can be controlled with on/off switch or by the way it is held). Pretty cool all the same. It will be available in 2010.
Lack of Fashion to Prevent Victims: Air New Zealand
Everything is a little more relaxed down under, but even so, fashion, or lack thereof, is used to make a statement. In this case, Air New Zealand bares all but body paint to get passengers to do a double take and watch the safety videos.
The actors, all ANZ employees, sport an array of uniform types while hiding sensitive bits behind strategically placed lap belts, doors and inflatable life preservers. It’s a great example of a company using a humorous bit of shock value to get the tongues wagging and keep eyeballs glued to the screen.
Spotlight: Teecyle Tim of Teecyle.com & his SXSW Pepsi Win
This is a transcript from the interview with Tim Cigelske. Photo at left by Troy Freund
~~~

Welcome Back to Solessence BlogTalkRadio, and right now we’re going to have a little Spotlight. We’re going to be talking with Teecycle Tim (of recycled t-shirt biz, Teecycle) and discuss his winning Pepsi’s 60 Second Pitch grant.

Why don’t you give us a little background on your company?

TT: Sure. Well, Teecycle started a little over a year ago, and it’s kind of a hobby that evolved into a little bit more. It’s still a side business. I don’t know if I should call it a hobby, or a part-time business or what, but my full time job is at Marquette University, and this is growing bigger and bigger by the day. But the background is, it is just a used t-shirt website. It started off with the idea that I just like vintage, old t-shirts, and I couldn’t believe no one was selling them online in a centralized spot, so I just started with the website and it’s kind of picked up steam ever since.

So did you initially do this to boost your own inventory? Or really was it the intent to resell?

TT: It was a good excuse to get as many used shirts as I could in my house, with the rationale, to my wife, that I would get rid of them someday. And I made a deal with myself that I wouldn’t really keep any shirts that I found through this. You know, there are previous shirts in my closet that I wouldn’t get rid of anytime soon. But if I started keeping some of the shirts I gained from this, it would just be game over for our house, because there have been quite a few that have come through the doors, and gone out now, all over the country, all over the world. But the nice perk of it is, I do get to sample the shirts, I do get to wear them, get to model them, get my friends to model them, so it’s a nice little side perk of it.

I think that is one of the fun things about your site, is that you – for people who haven’t visited – you’re putting on these shirts, and you put people in funny modeling situations, then you go all over. How did you come up with that?

TT: Well, when I first started the site I just had shirts on the floor that I took pictures of…

That’s a pretty common format you see (on ebay, etsy)

TT: Right, yeah, pictures of the shirts themselves, and it is really boring. Not just someone visiting the site, but for myself. I’m like “I’m going to get really bored of the business if all I’m doing is taking pictures of shirts on my living room floor.” And I think I first convinced my wife to put them on and go in the backyard. And she had no clue (embarrassed laugh) that her photos would end up all over the Internet. There have been some articles written about Teecycle and they’ve pulled her photo, and it kind of evolved from there. I realized its kind of fun to model tee-shirts all over the city, in all different kinds of situations, and since then we’ve done photo shoots everywhere from Lake Michigan to the Washington Monument to the National Mall in Washington DC to when we go hiking. Just wherever we can just to add an element of fun when you throw in a silly photo shoot with it.

So you’re saying it’s a hobby, but even as a hobby you’ve got a lot of things to do to get it all into an action. Did you have this name beforehand? Was it a nickname into a business, or has the business handle become the nickname?

TT: Oh the Teecycle? The origin of the name, I had some lame name to start with, like The Tee Shirt Recyclery or Shirtcycle or something, and my wife Jess is like, “That’s not going to appeal to many people if you call it that.” I don’t know where it came from exactly, Teecycle. It became my online entity. Merged into one where Teecycle Tim became a way to market Teecycle.

It seems to have all flowed so easily for you. Have you had any real challenges up to this point? You’re getting press, selling shirts.

TT: I guess you hear this from most people who start projects that grow more than they expected it to, but it is more work than I thought. I’ve now kind of reinvented the format a few times. It started out as, well, it was going to be a website first and I thought that was just going to be too hard, so it became a blog. And I’ve changed it from Blogger to WordPress, and now I have my own software, so I’ve migrated it to that. Just some of the format changes and how I have just had to deal with certain things that came up – like shipping overseas. That came up pretty early on. I was thinking, you know, this is a small potatoes sort of thing, and right after I got started it got picked up by a t-shirt blog in San Francisco. I immediately started getting orders from England and I’ve had orders in Australia and Malaysia and, it’s little things like that you didn’t plan or expect in the beginning that you learn to deal with along the way.

Who knew? Now, do you have any outside help at this point, or is your wife working with you (other than in the “unsuspecting model” position)?

TT: (laughs) Yeah, I think we trade me doing household chores for convincing her to model as much as possible. We definitely bartered – you do the dishes and I’ll model for you now. She’s definitely now doing more of the business side of things that I don’t necessarily have expertise with. She has a background in management so it works well with that. But it’s been primarily me, and then an outpouring of support from people who have like-minded environmental ideals on the Internet, and a lot of local business and local organizations have helped us out when they can. It’s pretty encouraging.

Do you have an idea of how many shirts you’ve shipped worldwide?

TT: I don’t know how many I’ve shipped worldwide. I think about 329 total. I keep a running tally on the site, so I don’t know globally, but Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, so a couple more continents to go, but we’re getting there.

You’ll probably hit them, especially after the news of this award. Now, Pepsi thought your simple idea was pretty impressive, and gave your a $4500 grant. Congratulations.

TT: Thank you.

There was a lot of competition for that – why don’t you give us a little background.

TT: Sure. It was kind of just a whim I entered that contest. There was a “60 Second What’s Your Pitch” contest. All you did was call a number and say in 60 seconds or less why you have a business idea that’s both viable from the business side, and has a positive impact on the community. When I got the first email from them I was expecting it to say “You didn’t qualify.” Instead it said “You are a finalist,” in this nationwide contest, and a couple of weeks later I got an email that I again was not expecting that said “You’re the winner”. So I ended up getting a $4500 grant, which is kind of overwhelming for a company whose only revenue has come from selling $7 used t-shirts and donating a dollar of that to a local non-profit. Now, suddenly having a budget. So we have to be smart about what we’re going to use it for and plan on the long term, hopefully, and not just “Oh we have this money now, what should we do with it.”

Will Pepsi offer you any guidance on it or are they just cutting you a check?

TT: No, they are just handing it over, just mailing a check. Fortunately in Milwaukee there is a pretty good budding entrepreneur business organization named BizStarts. I have not been very active with them and I hope to be more active in the future. And because I work at Marquette, it is kind of a nice deal that they are starting a certificate of Entrepreneurship this fall and it’s good timing. I’ve enrolled in that, so during the Fall I might get more business savvy, more business sense to go along with this crazy idea.

You’ve got a real life lesson for the class.

TT: Exactly.

Now, you also mentioned the dollar donation. That’s pretty cool. You are doing green in two different ways: 1) recycle t-shirts, which would normally end up in landfills and 2)donations. Let’s talk about the donations you are making.

TT: When I first started this, a couple of things: I had done river cleanups, we live right by the river, and I wanted to help a non-profit. I’d also read, right around the time I’d started, a great book I recommend to everyone called “Let My People Go Surfing” by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. It’s a really quick read, but he lays out his business and environmental philosophy and what they’ve done to be as green as possible, an eco-friendly company. And in their goals, they don’t even have to make a profit, they just have to take care of the environment as best as they can, and profits will take care of themselves after that. So I figured if I am using these shirts in one way to be environmentally friendly, I can also give back. So early on I formed a partnership with the River Revitalization Program and donate a buck to help rivers and trails. To date it’s been over $300, and it’s kind of nice.

I read once, I can’t remember who said it, but someone made a comment that you were one company that did so much with so little, and it is true. You said it’s such a little idea, but it has made a lot of people happy, contributing a lot to the area, and, obviously you are getting rewarded back already, so congratulations.

TT: Well I really appreciate it, thanks for the kind words about that.

Visit the site, Teecycle.org, to check out current inventory or donate a gently used shirt.

Dream Stamina, Pt. 1: Shane &Shawn Shoes

Transcript from the Solessence BlogTalkRadio interview with Shane & Shawn Ward of Shane & Shawn Shoes and Boardroom Rock Stars.

~~~
Hello and welcome to Solessence Radio. Today we (are talking about entrepreneurial) Dream Stamina, and featuring Shane and Shawn Ward of Shane&Shawn shoes. The second guest is Marc Paez of ManGlaze Nail Polish. But first up we’ve got Shane & Shawn. Let’s get them on the air.
S&S: Thanks for having us.
Thanks for being on today, how are things
S&S: Really good, just making things happen in NYC and happy to be on the radio
Excellent, well I know you’ve got some big news here to share, but first let’s give people an idea on your background. You started off with DETNY, correct?
S&S: Absolutely. My brother and I are originally from Detroit. We went to the University of Michigan, and right out of college (this is Shane by the way)> I started designing shoes for Adidas, for four years, and then Shawn was working at Chrysler. After four years we decided to move to New York to design our own shoe collection, and we decided to call it DETNY, which is a combination of Detroit – New York. The whole concept behind all of our shoes is that we’re taking our expertise and designing functional, super comfortable, athletic shoes in the athletic shoe industry and combining it with our sense of style – which is really hip, cool stylin’, so people out there who don’t think that really hip, beautiful fashion can be comfortable, then they’re mistaken, as you can find out with our brand.
Patented Memory Foam Comfort System
Right and that’s a really interesting combo to put together. You guys really do have some very sexy shoes, and they’ve been seen all over – red carpet, premieres – you’ve really hit the celebrity circuit. From there, you went on to Shane & Shawn Shoes, and, is that a departure from DETNY?
S&S: DETNY was our sport shoe, and all of the ladies told us “you have to design some really cool, sexy heels that are also comfortable,” so when we started making dressier shoes we called them Shane & Shawn. After having DETNY and SS together for about a year, we decided to make everything together to make it seamless and easier and started to brand ourselves. So everything is now SS, whether it is a sport shoe or stilettos.
Why don’t you name some locations where SS can be purchased?
S&S: Right now you can go online at ShaneandShawn.com, Macys NY. We also sell at Zappos.com, Shoes.com, Amazon.com
That’s a pretty good lineup. You know, even though you’ve got the background with design, and the experience, it is still a huge thing to launch your own company. What gave you the guts to do it?
S&S: That’s a great question, because, you know, a lot of people do see my brother and I on TV, in magazines, hear us on the radio – and they only see the glamorous part of it. But actually, starting your own venture, whether it’s in fashion, or whether you want to start your own restaurant or consultancy, it’s actually pretty difficult. You need to make sure all of your ducks are in a row, and I think what really gave us the faith was the fact that we’re both extremely young, we were confident that we would be successful, and we always felt that if we did fail, we could always go back and get a 9-to-5. But without family and a whole lot of responsibility, we felt like it was going to be a great time for us to do that.
So, you had factored in the failure portion as well – and it was still worth it?
S&S: Yeah, definitely. I mean, if you don’t try, you don’t know whether you’ll succeed or fail, and we had enough nerve in us, or were naive enough, to say “Go ahead, let’s go after it”, and it has been great so far. We’ve been full time entrepreneurs, right now, for 6 years, and we’re very, very happy. We tell this joke that if we do fail, we can always go back and live with our mom and she would be the happiest person on the earth if that happened.
Now you mentioned your mom, and you guys are pretty active on Twitter. She has joined you now.
S&S: Yeah, my mom, she’s retired and looking for cool things to do, and we actually set up the account for her and she’s just been hard core in love with Twitter. It has just opened up a new world for her and it’s really doing a cool thing connecting her with a younger generation. The whole idea came about, being her sons, we always received her words of wisdom through text messages, and her cooking tips, and we felt instead of her having to email all of us individually, this would allow her a greater audience and allow others to get some of that uplift that we get on a daily basis. And other people have definitely gravitated towards her, so it’s been fun for her and fun for us as well.
Well she’s really warm, and that comes across. It’s amazing how tight knit of a family you are. Do you have other members working in your company as well?
S&S: Right now we have a cousin so we do have some family, which is really great, but we did have our sister and one of our brothers really active when we first launched the collection.
Now jumping back a bit, you are primarily in the US?
S&S: Now we’re primarily sold in the US, but we do have a couple of accounts in Columbia. That’s really great for us. We do see ourselves as an international brand, and we are in the process of talking to several distributors in Europe.
And as far as your line, who is the contact if someone is interested in checking it out, picking it up for his or her store?
S&S: If someone is interested they should check out www.shaneandshawn.com and also if they want to email they can email at info@shaneandshawn.com
And guys, I feel like we’re sort of racing over the shoes, but can you tell me what’s coming for your Fall line?
Sneak peek Fall ’09 – Aqua Marine Mary Janes with Ruffled Satin Trim
S&S: Absolutely. This fall collection is one we’re really excited about. The whole theme is to go more natural, and when I say more natural I mean kinda quieting down the whole bling aspect of the collection and brining in more natural leathers so that the pieces and all of the ornaments and leathers and suedes can be used with multiple outfits, so it is not so specific to the shoe. We have a few booties in the collection that are going to be marvelous. We actually, in our women’s collection, named a shoe after Sherrie Shepard. We found out she’s a big fan and it is a really beautiful bootie that is suede all over with a really cute textile collar. And in the men’s shoes, we have some rock ‘n roll boots that are going to debut and we def think catch everyone off guard. It’s combining really rugged details you’d find in a workman’s boot, but in a sleek European shape.
That’s really interesting [thinking of times I’d worn Caterpillar boots as a statement, but wishing they could be tough and less construction].
S&S: And also keep in mind, stay tuned, because we launched a very small collection of handbags this past spring, but this fall, in August, we are launching the full line of handbags. So watch out, they’ll be really hot.
So they’ll be available in August?
S&S: Yes.
Are you showing anywhere?
S&S:Yes, we’ll be showing at the WSA show in Las Vegas, July 31-August 2.
That’ll be great, I have heard about those bags. That’s pretty exciting; you are expanding, going new directions. But the biggest thing is that you have just launched this huge, consulting portion of your business – Boardroom Rock Stars.
S&S: (laughs) Yes, this is great. We are really, really excited. It’s a cool name. We basically saw a need out there because there were so many people, whether they were students, or 30 something, or 60 something, they were contacting us asking “How did you guys get started?” , “How did you write your business plan?’, “I want to start a business.” Then, when the whole recession hit, there were so many people who were left without jobs, who really started thinking, “I need to not rely on a 9-5 anymore” and they started to contact us. So it was kinda like great timing, because we’d been getting all of these requests, and we found out there was really no where out there where people could go to learn about entrepreneurship and still relate to the people that were presenting to them in a cool, you know, fun way. So we just launched Boardroom Rock Stars, and it is basically where aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs can come and learn how to launch different companies. And Shane and I are not going to be the only ones having courses on our site; we’ll be having many, many other experts coming on, doing online courses, we’ll have different academies, we’ll have 24 hour entrepreneur packages where people can come and email us any time, day or night and they’ll get a response within 24 hours. We’re really, really excited and check us out at www.boardroomrockstars.com
You’re also not necessarily worried about competition; you’re actually offering a course for people who want to start their own footwear line.
Sketching out ideas for 2010
S&S: Yeah! The thing is there is room for everybody. When we first started our own footwear line five years ago, we had two mentors who had shoe companies who helped us day and night. You know, they gave us detailed contacts, they gave us their PR firms, they gave us everything they knew, and we feel the same way about the next generation of shoe designers. It’s that, there is room for them – they may end up being competition, but there is room. And if you have good product, quality product, and you market yourself right, you’ll be successful no matter how much competition is out there, so we embrace it and we want to share the knowledge.
Where do you recommend people start on the Boardroom Rock Stars, as you have different ‘academies’ as you are calling them.
S&S: Yeah, there are different packages, and I think a really good way is to search the courses section and see if there’s something there that is actually in the field you’d like to know about. But we’re going to be adding two new courses every week. If there is nothing there, I would definitely recommend signing up for 24 hour entrepreneur, which will allow them, that’s a monthly package they can purchase, they can email us anytime and we also get on the phone every now and then with them. And the cool thing is we’re doing student discounts, so if someone is in undergrad or grad school and they really want to get a head start on the competition, we give them a nice discount on the subscription. So I would say check out the courses page and check out 24-hour entrepreneur as startup packages.
Do you see people joining up in NY to meet you or keeping it all online?
S&S: Oh absolutely. We not only have people in NY reaching out to us since we launched today, but there are people on the east coast in general, some in DC, that want to meet up with us in person and take on that whole Shane and Shawn academy. So we’re seeing it all today, the feedback coming in at a great rate.
I think that’s actually valuable. We touched briefly on your background, but one amazing thing to note is that you hit your $1 million mark in your third year, so you really do have a good track record behind you. You see a lot of people just starting up consulting services, but you do have the experience there.
Shawn and Dean of University of Michigan Engineering – Alumni Awards – Top 5 in the US
S&S: Thanks. You know, we weren’t born with a silver spoon, we’ve built our company from scratch, and I think that’s what we’ll be able to relate to everyone. If someone is out there thinking maybe they can’t accomplish or get to a million dollar business because maybe they didn’t have a silver spoon, we tell them that’s not necessary. We tell them if you have hard work, a great business plan and great mentors, you can make it happen. And even if you do have a silver spoon and you do have a lot of funding, you still want to be as frugal and efficient as possible. You just don’t want to start throwing money around. No matter what background you’re from, we’ll be able to give you the right tips and right information to be successful.
Do you have any additional news you wanted to share about what’s coming up?
S&S: Shawn and I are working on a collaboration with another footwear company so that we can basically offer the styling and the function that you get with the Shane and Shawn collection but at a more affordable price for the masses. That’s something that people on Facebook and Twitter can definitely be in the know, over the next couple of months, or when we launch.
Do you have a name for the line yet?
S&S: We haven’t worked up a name yet, that’s something we don’t want to say now
I wanted to talk about your MADE episode for MTV
S&S: Yeah that was a lot of fun
You guys look sharp – always.
S&S: Thank you.
You were a good choice. How did that happen?
S&S: Well, someone from MTV productions contacted our publicist and asked if we were interested in making over a young guy in Phoenix, Arizona into a ladies man. Not making him over just psychologically, but with his fashion sense. They thought it would be great, and they brought us out there, it was a 5-week process and we had a lot of fun. I mean this guy, he wasn’t the most fashionable guy in the school, he froze up around the ladies, we def worked on his confidence, and we put him through like a boot camp basically, of being ready to talk to the ladies at anytime. We gave him a nice makeover, hair, eyebrows, he lost 20 pounds because he was overweight and we got him into a nice workout regiment. It was so much fun and I think the episode couldn’t have come off better.
Shane and Shawn with Lydia Hearst
Well now how did you guys get so smooth?
S&S: (laughter) You know what, I think it’s a matter of my brother and I; we grew up in a big family. We have two older sisters, tons of cousins, our mom is really special in our life, and I think that has a lot to do with being confident and being able to express yourself.
You’re so good. Like I said, you’re really inspiring and, it’s nice to have good role models around, you know?
S&S: Absolutely.
Well thanks again, loved having you on and good luck to you guys.
S&S: Thank you so much for having us, and keep in touch. Let’s do it again.
You can add them at Facebook, and follow Shane and Shawn and Boardroom RockStars on Twitter. If you’d like to chat with mom and read words of inspiration, follow her here.
Woody Allen wins $5M from American Apparel
That’s a whole lotta hot water AA keeps pouring on themselves. Sometimes the public just needs to be shocked by good products, service and marketing.
In the spring of 2007, my company American Apparel put up two billboards depicting an image of Woody Allen dressed as a Hasidic Jew, from the movie “Annie Hall,” one in New York City and the other in Los Angeles. They were up for less than a week, and when Mr. Allen’s representatives asked that we take them down, we did so immediately. Nonetheless, Mr. Allen subsequently filed a lawsuit against American Apparel, demanding $10 million for the unauthorized use of his image.
GokeyFest – Get Your T-Shirts Here: BrewCityBrand
Danny Gokey returns to Milwaukee tomorrow for American Idol ‘Danny Gokey Day’. A reward for coming in as one of the top three finalists, Gokey will spend the day pressing the flesh with public and press for a montage that will air on AI in coming weeks.
Need a list of festivities? Click on the map. Gokey starts at 7am at Fox6 news stations on Green Bay and will be taking the stage at Summerfest grounds at 4:15pm. While Summerfest is the biggest music festival in the US, it flies under the radar for most people. Gokey is undoubtedly the best thing that has ever happened to their marketing department.
Locals Brew City Brand are also promoting the city and Gokey with a limited edition run of Milwaukee Idol shirts. Only 100 or so are printed, so order yours now.
What is all of the hubbub about Danny? Most women will tell you that while Adam is probably the Idol shoe-in, Danny expresses “passion” every time he sings, and draws them in. He also has quintessential Midwestern Milwaukee (good)looks, and the touching story of losing his wife has only helped to win people to his side and his cause. Does he have the combo that will enable him to take it all? Whatever the case, Milwaukee is ready to party tomorrow. Welcome home, Danny!
CafePress -ing shopkeepers for profits
Cafepress , one of the largest online design & sell shops, has suddenly changed selling tactics. Along with establishing the price points in their own marketplace (creating a conflict with their own merchants), the final payout for shopkeepers will be a mere 10% commission.
With shops like Zazzle around, why would associates stay with CafePress? Do you think they are cutting their own throat or really looking out for everyone? Please chime in if you are currently selling, and whether you are staying or going.
—————————-
Dear Shopkeeper,
The CafePress Marketplace launched four years ago as a way to showcase Shopkeeper designs to a broader online retail audience. Since then our catalogue has grown to over 300 million products, and each month over 11 million shoppers visit CafePress to find unique and expressive products.
While our Marketplace growth has benefitted many Shopkeepers, others have seen commissions flatten or decline as the Marketplace becomes more saturated with redundant content. It is clear to us that to continue growing our Marketplace, we need to deliver a higher-quality shopping experience to customers, continue to invest in customer acquisition, and maximize conversion.
To do this we’re making two key changes:
Beginning today: We’ll be making changes in our search platform and algorithm to ensure we’re better delivering the designs and merchandise shoppers are looking for. This includes bringing the best designs to the front, and reducing redundant designs.
Beginning June 1st: We’ll start setting prices in the Marketplace, and Shopkeepers will receive a 10% commission off the final retail prices from all Marketplace sales. This change provides our shoppers with consistent pricing that’s competitive with other online retail stores. It also allows us to better invest in a quality retail experience and continued growth.
These changes DO NOT impact the pricing, markup, or sales you are driving in your own shops. By separating our Marketplace pricing from the prices you set in your shops, we’re able to preserve shop base pricing and continue to support Shopkeepers who drive their own sales.
We recognize that the implications of this strategic shift are significant and will affect Shopkeepers who sell designs in the Marketplace in different ways. The purpose of this email is to inform you of changes, and to help you understand how this will improve the overall retail customer experience at CafePress and help us ensure continued growth.
How these changes may impact you:
As with any decision that impacts our Shopkeepers, these changes were made only after careful consideration.
For some Shopkeepers, the impact will be on the upside as their designs receive more premium placement due to algorithm changes. Others may see no change or a decline in their commissions due to the new set pricing and commission structure. The first check you’ll see based on the new 10% commission structure will arrive in August (for June sales).
We’ve posted complete details and a list of FAQs of these changes.
On June 1, 2009 the current Shopkeeper Agreement, Shop Services, and Pricing Policy will change to reflect the new changes to the CafePress Marketplace. The major changes are to the Shop Services and Pricing Policy. You can review the new Seller Services (currently Shop Services) and Shop Pricing Policy (currently Pricing Policy).
If you have questions, please email us at marketplacequestions@cafepress.com. Depending on the questions, we’ll either answer them directly or publicly at the Shopkeepers News & Announcements page.
Sincerely,
CafePress
Cedar You in My Dreams
It is Spring Cleaning season, and I thought I’d share a bit of closet envy.
We all know about people with entire bedrooms devoted to their wardrobes, or Carrie’s dream shoe closet (or the above male wet dream according to Heineken). Me? It wasn’t so much the space but the type of space. Personally, I’ve always dreamed of a cedar closet.
I’m not sure why I had such a fascination with cedar. Growing up on the west coast everyone was familiar with the Lane cedar chest (do girls still wish for hope chests?). I’d never really had a problem with moths – not like we do in Wisconsin. But I also detested the moth balls used to keeps wools safe, and longed for the chemical free use of cedar. It just seemed like such a useful, little luxury.
In our digs, I first laughed at the little slip of a door in the hallway:
Then I opened the door: Holy bananas!
This tiny little space is floor to ceiling cedar, including the door. There are two rails allowing for double hanging. And the shelf is adjustable.
What is the purpose of the cedar closet?
Protection from predators
If you live in Wisconsin and have wool, chances are you’ve seen this little bugger. I brought two wool rugs with me from California, and one disintegrated before I realized the problem. The other is hanging onto dear life. The natural oils in cedar help repel insects. For added protection, it is still recommended to “bag and ball” (did I just coin a phrase?).
How does it work and what keeps it working?
This floor-to-ceiling cedar closet is ideal because it is the natural oils in cedar that give the distinct aroma that drives bugs away. It is the destructive larvae that eat through tasty fabrics, and adult moths won’t lay eggs in such a pungent smelling environment.
The oils don’t last forever though. Cedar should be refreshed with a light sanding to revive the wood. Too much contact with air, dirt and simply time turns the cedar from a nice red to a brownish tone. This color change or lack of scent is a sign to perform maintenance or risk creatures getting cozy in your goods. Sanding once a year is a common recommendation, with a light application of cedar oil as an option. Maintenance is so easy, even Spiderman can do it!
How do I get my own closet?
If you don’t already have a built-in and are looking to convert or build, there are two ways:
1) Use Eastern Red Cedar. This is the original cedar harvested primarily from the southern Appalachian Mountains. These planks produce the strong cedar scent. This is the more expensive route but will provide a beautiful finish.
2) Cedar flakeboard. This was my backup in college, and I have pulled those boards and taken them with me everywhere I’ve gone. You simply nail them in and you’re done.
If you share the same dream I’ve always had, don’t despair. Seems dreams really do come true!
Pierce Mattie’s Forecast of The Top 10 Consumer Trends for Summer
Consumers beat the heat by stocking up on sunscreen, burning off calories at their favorite cardio class, putting their birth control to good use and enjoying an economic night about town with their favorite speed-rack vodka.
04.20.2009 – With the economy in a state of flux, retailers, vacation hot spots and consumer goods’ manufacturers have been anxiously waiting to find out about the consumer trends for summer. This year, due to the extended winter season, summer has been the last thing on people’s minds. While shorts, flip-flops and bright colors usually can be seen on Broadway right after Easter, this year people are still wearing their winter coats.
Here’s what made Pierce Mattie’s hot list this year:
1. Expensive airbrushing is out and self-tanning is in. Summer skin will be muted with self-tanners showing a softer side of bronze this year. Consumers who spent upwards of $70.00 a session to keep that glow for one week last summer, will find themselves at their local pharmacy getting a tube of sunless tanner from DHA, Hawaiian Tropic or Jergens for under $10.00
2. Understated highlights will replace Versace vixen
, foregoing the bold and demarcated styles of seasons past. Consumers will opt for the affordability of a subtle style’s longer lifespan versus the high upkeep of brighter looks. Teens are expected to look into classic favorites like Sun-In, with parents following the do-it-yourself trend.
3. Costume jewelry will continue to be the rage
with semi-precious stones being outside of most consumers’ price range. Look for jewelry made of acrylics and plated metals to see a growth in sales. Brands like Ben-Amun by Isaac Manevitz and pieces like Kate Spade’s “Mariposa Fleur” Butterfly Bangle will gain popularity. This jewelry trend is expected to last through the holiday season of 2010.
4. Coupons and value-added shopping will forefront in consumers’ minds
, with sales reaching record peaks during the summer season. It will be one red, white and blue sale after another. Consumers who favor gifts with purchase at the cosmetics counter will be in luck—rumor has it that those leftover goodie bags from this winter will reappear on the selling floor before June.
5. With massive layoffs and cutbacks, it will be no surprise to see some executives taking an extended summer off working on their resumes while sunning at the beach. This translates into higher sales for sunscreen brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat and La Roche-Posay.
6. Exercise is one of the best stress relievers and right now everyone needs to decompress. This summer, more and more people will be hitting the gym to burn off steam. Rather than stay solo on the cardio machine, don’t be surprised to see health club members heading to the classroom for a dose of group exercise. This summer people want to feel like they are part of a group and belong, more so now than ever before. A 60 minute spin class at your neighborhood gym can be just the trick to get your psyche back into the right gear.
7. The best stress buster next to reading a trashy romance novel is making love. That’s right—birth control brands such as Trojan, Durex and Lifestyles will see an increase in sales as love making will help to ease mounting financial tensions. And for the unemployed, what better way is there to spend excess free time? Playful lubricants and sex accessories from brands such as Booty Parlor, I.D. Lube and Astroglide will also see an increase in sales.
8. Vodka goes with just about everything from that Bloody Mary at brunch to the Cosmo at sunset. Spirit companies can expect to see an increase in purchases of their low to mid-tier brands like Svedka, Absolut and Smirnoff.
9. Many people reach for comfort foods in stressful times and this recession will not be an exception. Expect to see an increase this summer in the adverse Atkins suggestions: bread, candy, chocolate and spaghetti. Inexpensive, familiar, and bringing with them pleasant memories of childhood, comfort foods help consumers feel safe in an unsure world.
10. The economy has driven comfort to the forefront and you’ll find consumers being drawn to distressed denim and boyfriend jeans as their fashion statement of choice. This hot style has re-emerged from the 80s in brands like True Religion Brand Jeans and Levi’s.
Consumers’ purchases are becoming increasingly reflective of their moods and psychological state. Affordable brands that create a sense of stability and safety, that are at the same time fun, engaging and offer an escape from the challenges of the world, will win in this economy.
