I first found out about Gel II from the Nails Magazine Next Top Nail Artist competition. As a participant I was sent a package of goodies that included their Polish II. I really loved the colors and super smooth application of the lacquer.
I recently had a chance to get to know the Gel II and Gel II Reaction line a little more and I have to say, I was pretty impressed. The things that really stood out for me about the line:
No solvents – less drying on nails
No base coat needed – base coat is built into the color formula
Close to 200 colors!
Super shiny top coat
Matte is a big trend this fall, and since many of the colors dry matte you can wear the trend pretty easily without additional buffing or another topcoat.
It’s LED curable – 30 seconds per layer makes for a super fast service. Can cure by traditional UV if you don’t have LED lamp.
The cool things is that there is also a complimentary Polish II line that matches all of the the Gel II (except for the Gel II Reaction), and it is also a base coat free formula. It also has an optional base coat if clients have ridges, or if you want a smoother application with some of the chunky glitters.
I ran out and bought a slew of colors to play with, but even so I’ve barely got 1/8th of the collection. Still, I think you an idea of the fun range available with this line. Available at select distributors and online at GelTwo.com Try your hand at the Halloween art work contest while you are at it.
Gel II Reaction – Just like the mood rings, the polish reacts to temperature. The main color changes when exposed to warmth. In most of these shots you can see the free edge is the original color. I love this stuff!
Despite the terrible weather, the party was popping last night at Victoria’s Secret in Woodfield Mall. VS held a nationwide event and I had the chance to be on hand providing polish changes using the just released nail polishes:
There were 18 colors available ( rumor has it there are 24 total) plus a new pump bottle of Polish Remover and a combination base/top coat. The colors were rich, and the formulation very creamy. The top choice of the night was the color “Classified”, a pink with rose or raspberry undertone. It somewhat matched the darker shade on the tablecloth.
The Sign-up sheet was filled in minutes! This was the first time VS has had a manicurist on-site, and it was a hit.
Next in line was a dark red called “LushWorthy” that had a gorgeous foil look to it. It was a classic red, with a twist.
Shhhh..she was in 6th grade and had come in with full nail polish art she had applied. Had to add hearts on the new Victoria’ s Secret polish on her fingers.
“Bitten” is the lightest color, and is what is used on all VS models for their shoots. One coat gave a clean look, and three gave a nice, opaque white/pink.
With raffles, mini waters, chocolates, discounts and double points, it was a fun night for everyone. Thanks for stopping by. If you pick up a bottle of the new Victoria’s Secret nail polish, let me know what color you selected!
Come down to see me at Victoria’s Secret at Woodfield Mall for savings, sexy chocolates, triple points on purchases, and a polish change with their NEW Victoria’s Secret Lacquer line tonight. 6-8pm Now where did I put that Swarovski bra…

These Six new CND Shellac colors to hit shelves March 2012
Behold, the 6 new colors from CND Shellac: Dark Lava, Rubble, Cityscape, Silver Chrome, Silver VIP Status, Gold VIP Status These are all indoor swatches I took just to get you the scoop. I’ll be getting outdoor shots too. What do you think of them? The colors are going on sale in March so get your PRE-ORDERS to your distributors now!
Dark Lava
Gorgeous, jewel-toned black wine
Rubble
Cityscape
Dove Gray
Silver Chrome
The Effects – Silver VIP Status & Gold VIP Status
Ok, so it technically isn’t an Effect (that’s reserved for the lacquer line) but it serves in the same vein. These lovelies give a wash of glimmer over color.
Silver VIP Status
Silver VIP Status over Cityscape
I NEED to get a better photo of this one. When we were asked for fantasy Shellac colors, one of mine was the spectacular gray called Miss Wu from the Jason Wu collection done with CND. It’s this cool and dreamy gray with a chic pearlization to it. By applying Silver VIP Status over Cityscape, you can achieve a very similar look. Without, you get a great cream. It’s fabulous to have options.
Gold VIP Status over Rubble
Again, a sleek wash that just give a perk to the color. Can be used all over or in art. Try it in art!
That’s it for now. I’ll be getting more photos together for you. Any other questions or requests on the product ask away.
Fashion Week is coming up and I’ll be detailing looks for you. For on-the-go reporting I’d love if you would “Like” my Solessence Facebook page to keep up while I’m away! Detailed how-tos will be posted to the blog after my return (and also closer to actual season as is my norm).
What nude polish did Rachel Zoe’s pair with her ss 2012 launch during Fashion Week? Amanda by Zoya was the select shade. Watch Sunshine Outing apply this beautiful shade.
CND is phasing out nearly 70 items – now is the time to get them before they are gone. But don’t be sad! New and exciting ones are around the corner. Catch these before they are gone from your supplier:
A new year is 365 days of new opportunities, and I have something that can help you through that time. The beauty mavens over at Julep are offering an exclusive discount and giveaway for you!
Julep is a boutique nail salon that carries their own line of polishes and products. There are four locations in the Pacific Northwest – Seattle area, to be specific. While each location offers unique membership pampering packages in addition to appointment/walk-in services, living in the area is only a plus. Through the Julep Maven program, you can experience Julep by getting a sneak peek to the sets sent out to top beauty editors across the US every month. You’ll be sent first looks at color, plus sample top products.
Quick Review:
Julep sent me a Maven bag to test drive and of the items I received in my Maven bag is the Julep Glycolic Hand Scrub – a full 3 ounce bottle. I love this product because it does double duty as a cleanser and left a silky, exfoliated feel to my hands. It is a great size for travel, and you can even use this for your face. Shake this puppy up very well so that the ingredients are mixed before you try to squeeze any out. Proper exfoliation leads to better absorption of your beauty products that benefit your skin, so it is an important step.
Julep’s nail polishes come in a very unique bottle reminiscent of Tom Ford’s Black Orchid . Pretty and tapered, there are loads of colors to choose from in this collection. Would you like to try a few of them? The Maven program ensures you’ll get 12 months of Julep nail products for only $19.99 a month.
Julep is offering Solessence readers two additional ways to experience the brand!
1. Get Your Own Maven Box: Go to Julep.com, order your own Maven Box and type in Solessence at checkout. You’ll get your first box for only $5! The Maven boxes are valued at $40 and available for a subscription price of $19.99 a month. As a Solessence reader you’re saving almost $15 off the the already discounted subscription price. Go for it!
2. Win Your Own 3 month Maven Subscription: Julep is generously offering Solessence readers a chance to win and 3 months of Maven Boxes (product value $120, subscription value ~ $60)! Here is how you can kickoff 2012 as a Julep Maven –
Go to Julep.com and take the style quiz. This is the same quiz beauty editors across the US have taken to find out what Julep colors and hues they will most likely swoon over. You need to know, you know?
Come back here to this post on Solessence.com and in the comments, post your style. It will be fun to see the trends!
I’m on a little hiatus, so in two weeks I’ll be back to pull a winner at random and announce it. Don’t worry, I’ll be checking in check out your styles. You must include your real name and a working email.

No detail was left out to ensure Prabal Gurung’s showing was a cohesive collection. Beautiful purples dominated from clothes to lips to nails.
Did you know Prabal Gurung collabs with Sally Hansen each season on a new color specific to his collection? For ss 2012, he created a dark, nearly black yet glowing purple called “Loves-Me-Not” in the Complete Salon Manicure formula that is a stunner. Celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi took it one step further and layered the dark over Sally Hansen’s Lacey Lilac Xtreme Wear base. You can see better detail on the sample nails in the photo below:
“Loves-Me-Not” becomes available on counters everywhere Sally Hansen is sold around April 2012.
For the runway, the manicures were applied on the spot. Jin Soon shared with me how to get this look, and you can do it at home or salon as well. It is similar to the CND Moon nail that was my favorite of all time so you know I am all over this look. Watch the video and see why Jin says the Sally Hansen brush is made for this type of art:
Like it? Will you try it?
A look at Gurung’s collection gives you an idea of how perfectly this nail completed the look.
Hi Everyone, I know you’ve been patiently waiting for Shellac swatches and I want to say Thank You. I have been swamped at work but started them thanks to a little help from friends (Hi Ingrid!). Look for back on this post in the next few days. In the meantime, here is a bit of a teaser:
Studio White: This soft white makes for the most natural French ever! It is also very easy to work with compared to Cream Puff. I just got it in and have done 5 french so far. Very pretty.
Zillionaire (over pinky nail): glitter with red, blue and gold flecks.
Asphalt: Just like the CND Asphalt polish. I recommend stocking up on retail if you are a nail tech, because your clients can buy a bottle for toes or for extending wear. This is a hothothot color for fall/winter!
Hotski to Tschoske*: Oy, I think I spelled that wrong. But it is a very bright teal. *hotski to tchotchke
Moonlight & Roses: This is like Beau on steroids. Same white frost bits but with red/pink sheen. It really makes a glow to the nails and looks fab with studio white (see above too).
Purple Purple: Photographed blue here, but a gorgeous dark purple. I liked it much more than I thought I would.
Check back for swatches.

There are changes to the packaging front & one side this fall 2011.
FRONT CND SHELLAC
I always tell my clients that the term Shellac is now used for a 2 week manicure in the way Kleenex is to tissues or Xerox is to copying. It’s treated as a catchall! If it isn’t CND, it isn’t the patent pending Shellac. Looky what’s on the cover of the boxes now!
The miniscule color identifier is on the bottom of the front. The sales clerk and I didn’t realize it was there.
SIDE CND SHELLAC
The other change is to the side of the box. They’ve removed the fantastic large print stating the color. It was so easy to confirm you had picked up the right color, and it was probably easier to stock. Life goes on.
August babes – make sure you purchase Peridot. There used to be a time when I found the yellow green color of my birth month disappointing (why couldn’t it be diamond? or pink? or pearl? or or or) but over time I have grown to love this interesting stone, and I’m loving it as a Chanel polish. Peridot is true to name and utterly fantastic on the nails, although I would probably have this more in the vicinity of toes. This lineup is a handclapper.
Graphite is also a stunner. It is sometimes silvery, sometimes leadish. Oddly, it sometimes has a green cast. It takes normal silver or grey and pushes it into something mesmerizing.
Missing swatch #3 but it was the odd duck out. A pretty tan with a hint of green/blues, it was a dull version of OPI holo Design.
The Chanel formulation for Peridot and Graphite is easy, smooth, and it is even possible to get away with just one coat. Enjoy these summer sparklers!
CND has a pretty fabulous line of lacquers called Colours & Effects. Quick to dry (these are the same nail polishes used at Fashion Week) the colors are strong. The best part about this system is the ease it gives the nail artist.
PRIMARIES
Bicycle Yellow
Relay Red
Anchor Blue
Did you know that color is proprietary? When mixing paints or polishes, companies have their Pantone combinations registered. Now, take that same combo and move it a digit or two. Voila! Legally, you have a new color. This is why there are so many near dupes/repeats on the market.
SECONDARIES
Electric Orange
Green Scene
Eclectic Purple
CND’s Colours & Effects creates a new game by providing 50 creme shades (Colours) and 15 accents (Effects) of shimmer, pearl and sparkle that can be paired to create nearly 900 colors. The only extra sets to come out are special partnerships, like the Jason Wu collection, or one hot trend per season. The Limited Editions are made as must-haves.
CHROMES
Gold Chrome
Copper Chrome
Silver Chrome
I’ve swatched the first main categories of Primaries, Secondaries and Chromes. If you haven’t tried this brand out you don’t know what you are missing! Check back for the complete swatch set of 50 cremes and 15 effects.
The OPI Burlesque collection will ship end of October 2010. Nail Pros must pre-order by September 25th. Grab this gorgeous collection!
OPI’s Burlesque collection for Holiday 2010 takes on the bling that is a huge nail trend for now and into 2011. Comprised of six full glitters and six metallics/shimmers, this set can easily glam up any mani/pedi in a way that isn’t glaringly ho-hum holiday. For the salon, this is my pick for the season.
Gearing up for Fashion’s Night Out? Along with the fashion options, beauty opps will abound. One highly anticipated launch is Chanel’s new limited edition collection by Peter Philips. Chanel has always been on the forefront of nail fashion, and these khaki polishes are destined to be hauled. Khaki Vert, Khaki Brun and Khaki Rose (L-R) will be available in Chanel in New York only during FNO, and complimentary manicures will be given.

A quick trip into the life cycles of Shellac. See for yourself how the nail beds look after 27 days.
Client Carly responded immediately to the announcement of Shellac and changed out her color at day 14, even though it was perfect, to mix it up for her vacation. She ended up breaking a nail and bending others in a luggage mishap, but was so blown away that the polish still looked great, and held together other nails that bent, that she sent a photo right from the plane. “I think it would have been much worse if I hadn’t had the the Shellac on.” Luvs!
Another thing – Carly is a salon owner, so her hands take a beating with dye and water daily. Her manicure remained beautiful.
At day 13 she came in to trim back the broken nails and selected another Shellac color. She’s hooked, and so are we!
While breezing through Target the other day, I mused on the ever expanding line of “exclusive” and “prestige” items going mainstream. That this is a sore subject for salons and spas, and a source of confusion created by massclusivity should be another post. Those two items rotated through my head though, as I spied Essie lacquers on the shelves.
Some of you may be asking – Essie who? On one hand, my heart breaks that you have not experienced this lush, long lasting brand that made light pink iconic (Ballet Slippers, anyone?) as well as a more beautiful version of Chanel’s Particuliere, Mink Muffs, of which I could take gallons and gallons of the stuff. On the other, think of the joy you will soon experience at discovering a great brand. For years, Essie has been an East Coast favorite for stylists. As little known as the brand seemed to be beyond those borders, Essie pulled in $28 million dollars in net sales over the last 12 months. Not shabby for finger paints. Long lasting, chip resistant, beautifully colored polishes.
Established in 1981, Astoria based Essie moved beyond the easily accessible Duane Reade in New York to Trade Secrets in cities like Milwaukee. But an appearance in Target in middle America? All of that was explained away with the announcement L’Oreal had snapped up this boutique-ish brand to go manicure mainstream. Essie will bring to L’Oreal a very serious and cult favorite brand, giving them a lead in the drugstore market. What are the chances the formulations will change? The sale is to finalize in the next 60-90 days. Only time will only tell.
Are you a salon/spa carrying Essie? Does this impact whether you will use the line in your services? OPI is a brand that has survived having sales channels in supermarkets and is still considered a top line. If it is sitting next to Clearsil and still in demand, is the though of salon only old school? Does being salon exclusive matter anymore?
Got word on Friday from Chicago’s matte nail designer, Marc Paez of Manglaze, of their latest release.
Franken Steins (aka Franken Juggs) are a wide mouth jar used to mix and blend custom nail polish colors. The wide mouth makes it easy to add, and there is a brush attached to the cap. I think this could also work for mixing custom glitter colors and gel or acrylics.
These are the same jars he used to mix the custom colors for Gareth Pugh’s Paris Fashion Week show. You know, the guy they suggested might reign supreme after Alexander McQueen’s untimely departure? Kind of a big deal.
As per their style, the bottles are adorned with fantastical artwork, this by Tegan Coddington. Whether it is your style or not, it is hard to deny that talent.

Wondering if a 14-day no chip mani w/10 minute removal is right for you?
CND unleashed one of the big industry buzzes at America’s Beauty Show in Chicago. Shellac, what CND calls their “hybrid nail color” brushes on like a polish, wears chip free for two weeks like a gel and comes off in 10 minutes.
As always, CND packaging is slick. At first glance a few common questions are asked:
How does this differ from OPI Axxium?
How does this differ from a soak-able gel?
Shellac is brush on, and comes packaged just like nail polish. The product is only promoted to have a 2 week wear time, surely to account for nail growth. It doesn’t require bonder or buffing of the nail. In this way, it doesn’t seem too different from Axxium or a gel like Bio-Sculpture or Calgel. And because it is a hybrid, it has the flexibility of a gel but does not provide additional strength, like a polish.
The soak off procedure seems to be the biggest deal. Whereas most brands have a between the lines “10 minutes for every layer applied” CND promises Shellac is a 10 minute soak off in their special nail jackets, with any remaining polish flaked off via orangewood stick. Not bad. Customers were finding themselves in Acetone bowls for 20 – 45 minutes, sometimes having had the first layers of their colors drilled off to speed times. That is gone with this brand.
Here is what to expect during service:
Apply one layer of Shellac base coat to each nail/extension and cure under UV lamp
Apply two layers of Shellac UV Color Coat, cure under UV lamp
Nail Professionals: CND offers a very competitive package, with decals announcing the salon is a Shellac service provider. Demand has been very high since release, and CND reports sales have been 3 to 4 times initial production. You should contact your local distributor to find out their order status and see if there is a wait list you can get placed on.
Consumers interested in the Shellac manicure should talk to their salons!
There are currently 12 shades available and the line is hypo-allergenic without formaldehyde, toluene or DBP.
It’s official – We’ll be offering Shellac from the first wave of shipments. Make your appointment now for this 14-day manicure online
L to R: Thanks So Muchness; Mad As A Hatter; Absolutely Alice; Off With Her Red
I didn’t have my camera set to a high enough resolution, BUT you can see these are pretty amazing. Both reds could be replaced, but Thanks is gorgeous to the point of looking like racing car paint. Off With Her Red is a creme we have seen a million times before and can be skipped completely . However, Mad As A Hatter and Absolutely Alice are brilliant glitters. AA is not a solid blue, it is sprinkled with round silvers.
OPI’s Alice In Wonderland releases everywhere in January.

Introducing a teen to the world of beauty? Looking to gift a woman who needs a little TLC for nails? A kit is the perfect answer, and Zoya has the perfect kit for nails.
The Color Lock System provides everything the at home manicurist needs for a perfect polish. Included in the totes cute tote (oh yes, I went there) is the following:
REMOVE: Zoya’s nail polish remover comes in a big spill proof container with a flip top. Just like the pros use. It is flat out one of the best things in the kit. A gentle pump action is used to prime the pump, and the formula of the remover is gentle but effective.
This is also available in larger sizes for refills. Highly recommend.
.
Anchor & Armor: Anchor basecoat provides protection against polish staining the nails, and provides a better base for color to cling. Armor topcoat has been mentioned as one of the ‘best topcoats of all time’ in the UK Telegraph.
(Alternate to Anchor base) GET EVEN: This is another favorite of mine. Get Even is Zoya’s ridge filler. This option is for someone with a less than perfect nail plate. If you are going through a chipping phase, have ridges, or any other issues that could cause your polish to be anything less than mirror smooth, a ridge filler is key to perfection. Get Even is nice because it seems to apply smoothly and dry quickly. Ridge fillers often stay tacky to the touch and require more drying time.
HURRY UP: Nail polish sets through evaporation, and a minimum of 2 hours is needed to truly get things dry. However, there are times when you need to speed things up and get out the door. Drying drops harden a thin bit of the surface providing a bit of protection. Nail drops are a must have in the arsenal.
RENEW: This item is for maintenance of your 3 free polishes. Nail polishes harden through evaporation, on your nails and from the bottle. This is why your polish gets thick and clumpy over time! Instead of using your nail polish remover to thin (which can actually ruin your polish), RENEW is designed to work with Zoya’s formulations.

All of Zoya’s products are toluene, formaldehyde and DBP free for an eco and body friendly treatment. It can’t get any more perfect than that.
