Describe your NAHA Collection in 1 word.

Glass

Where were you when you found out you were chosen as a NAHA Finalist? Describe that moment in 3 words.

Computer Face Plant

Any advice for nail artists looking to take their artistry to the next level?

Keep reaching for varied inspiration; use every little thing that slightly sticks! What doesn’t work will fall away, so don’t sweat it. Experiment and stay educated.

Why Nails?

I’m a fan of the little canvases that adorn our digits. As fashion designer Prabal Gurung once stated, nail polish is the full stop -the final period – to a collection.

Matte finish or shiny?

You’ll find a combination of the two in many of my designs

What’s your party trick?

The elegantly artful nail and glittering with discretion

Tell us your go-to Nailstyle. Color, shape, etc.

Nothing beats a beautiful Almond or Oval shaped nude / neutral with just a bit of micro-glitter or pigment or crystals.

We’re going to Vegas! Where will we find you? Poolside, dancing the night away at the clubs, gambling, or relaxing and taking advantage of restaurants and room service?

When I’m not at PBA Beauty Week? If it’s Vegas, it’s showtime! JLo? Let’s go. Celine Dion? Bring it on.

Academy Awards 2015: Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson by Mark Townsend – Get The Look

“Working with Dakota has been such an incredible and inspiring experience. For the 2015 Oscars I wanted her hair to reflect her personality and style, and the Saint Laurent gown she chose to wear was very vibrant. We decided her hair should be off the dress, but not necessarily up, so I went for a young, cool ponytail. She has the most amazing fringe so we kept them down with some face framing layers to keep the style modern and perfectly imperfect.
•To create the look, I started by adding a few drops of Dove Youthful Vitality Silk Crème to her damp hair and blow dried with a Mason Pearson brush.
•For texture and grip, I liberally sprayed Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo throughout her hair, then gathered it just above the occipital bone, securing with a tight elastic.
•The key to dressing up a ponytail is in the details, so I pulled a small amount of hair from the ponytail, wrapped it around the base to hide the elastic, and secured with bobby pins.
•To create additional texture I sprayed Sally Hershberger Glam Waves spray in my hands and raked it through the ponytail.
•I finished by spraying Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray to add shine and keep her hair in place all night.”

Academy Awards 2015: Giuliana Rancic preps with Vidal Sassoon Salonist

The Look: Chic, Modern and Effortless “Make-Under”

After feeling inspired by the latest “make-under” trend sweeping the catwalk and the red carpet, Giuliana Rancic decided it was time to make a change for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. After being blonde for about 6 months, Giuliana decided to take it into her own hands, coloring her own hair with Vidal Sassoon Salonist Permanent At-Home Colour.

“Award Season is the busiest time of the year for me and I am constantly running around, so I needed a fresh, updated look that I also felt comfortable doing myself and maintaining.” Giuliana explained, “I’m a natural brunette, so by trading in my blonde hair, I didn’t have to worry about an obvious root line. Vidal Sassoon approached me to see if I wanted to try their new color kit, Salonist. To be honest, I was a bit nervous to try at-home color again because when I’ve colored my hair in the past, it’s always turned out dull and flat. However, with Salonist, I treated my roots & lengths separately, similar to what the pros do, so I felt like I was in good hands.” Giuliana explained that “one of my favorite things in the world is to experiment with hair color. I love switching my color every six months to give myself a fresh new look, so being able to make that switch myself but still get great results is huge!”

Giuliana Rancic colored her hair using Vidal Sassoon Salonist in Medium Gold Brown, transforming her hair color into a natural-looking, rich golden brown. This effortless yet rich brunette shade paired nicely with her red lipstick and Mireille Dagher dress, giving her a classic Hollywood glam look for the Oscars. Giuliana’s red dress and red lipstick made her dimensional hair color pop, and drew all eyes on her new hair look.

1. Prep: Mix Vidal Sassoon Salonist Colour Activating Lotion and Rich Colour Cream into the bowl using the expert brush until smooth and blended.

2. Apply Colour Cream to Roots: Be sure to identify the line on the bottom of the bowl, separating it into sections of ¾ and ¼. Using ¾ of the mix, brush the formula on the roots until covered, beginning with the center part and working your way around the hairline. Wait 20 minutes for the formula to set-in on the roots and hairline.

3. Transform Formula with Serum: Next, add the Vidal Sassoon Salonist Serum to the remaining ¼ of the formula, and mix contents together with the brush until smooth.

4. Apply Glaze to Lengths: Smooth it through the lengths of your hair as done in salons. Be sure to massage all of the hair including the roots to ensure optimal coverage. Wait 10 minutes for the formula to set-in, and then rinse out the colorant and shampoo hair.

5. Protect and Rinse: To finish, use the Vidal Sassoon Salonist Colour Preserving Conditioner and leave it on for 2 minutes. Continue to rinse and style as usual!

Emmys 2014: Claire Danes

Celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler created the look for Claire Danes for tonight’s Emmys Awards using Leonor Greyl products and breaks down for us how to get the look at home:

“Claire is wearing a red, Givenchy dress tonight that it a bit low in the front with crystal dragonfly jewels around the neckline. It is such a focal point that we wanted the hair up, and since there is something romantic about the dress , I wanted to do a braid. We did a soft, low side-part, with her hair away from the face and left pieces framing her face and covering her ears.

I started with her hair damp and ran the Leonor Greyl Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice all through her hair and then blow dried it up and away from her face using a large, round brush. To give more volume and direction to the roots, I went back in with the Voluforme and sprayed it around the face and hairline while blowing it out.

Next, I pulled her hair into a low ponytail using a bungee elastic with hooks on the end to secure it in place. Then, I created a fishtail braid and pulled it out to make it a bit wider and sprayed it with a generous amount of Leonor Greyl Laque Souple to give it texture while still keeping it structured.

I pinned the fishtail braid into a low chignon which I redid three times, but the third time was the charm! I fit it until it was situated just right to exhibit the texture of the braid as strongly as possible. I made sure she was standing while I pinned the braid into place to get a better idea of what it would look like throughout the night.“

Undergoing Chemo: Hair today, gone tomorrow – Eyebrows & Lashes

Earlier this year it was confirmed I had Ovarian cancer, stage 1. Even with this optimistic diagnosis (it’s always better to find earlier than later), Ovarian cancer at early stage needs to be treated as stage 3. I began chemotherapy six weeks after surgery. I’m putting this blog to work to occasionally post tips and tricks for the beauty challenges that face those undergoing treatment.

Today’s focus is on the challenge of hair loss, specifically eyebrows and lashes.

Pre-diagnosis, I was on a mission to be as groomed as possible for my surgery. Sorry, but people were going into parts unknown, and I wanted it to be decent looking. Legs, Brazilian, armpits (yes, you can do those), brows, mustache and facial…and I’m part Asian. Traditionally we don’t have that much hair! It felt great to be smooth as a baby’s bottom though, with nary a grooming care in the world.

At Jason Wu NYFW in 2011, when models had the appearance of their eyebrow bleached off for the show, only to return and have them colored back on afterwards

Fast forward to the impending hair loss from chemotherapy, and it’s a different story. Long strands I can practically braid hang in patches on my calves. It’s like I can’t let go of what I’ve got. The hair on my head is long gone, but that was easily solved with a wig, and that’s another story. Where I got nervous was when I thought about brow and lash loss. I have really great lashes for, again, someone part Asian. They curl up easily, and while they aren’t the mythical creature length bestowed on my father, husband and son, they are pretty long, and can look fake with mascara. Ok, so fake eyelashes maybe? But how do you address eyebrow loss?

I turned to Ramy Gafni, the Brow King of New York for expert answers. Ramy has a huge list of celebrity clientele that trust him with their brows, and a full line of products available at his spa, and in upscale Duane Reed and Walgreens beauty boutiques across the nation. Not only that, but he is a 15 year Lymphoma survivor, knowing firsthand what’s it’s like to be in the beauty industry and dealing with chemo treatment beauty issues. With all of that, he was kind and generous in his recommendations for dealing with brow and lash loss.

What is the first step one should take when seeing changes in brow/lashes? Should pre-shaping occur? Will any eyebrow pencil do?

If your brows become sparse, or disappear altogether during treatment, here’s what to do:

· Do not remove any hair during treatment, unless its an errant hair, like in the center of your forehead.
· Fill in your brows with a wax based product (powder will not adhere well to bare skin or sparse brow areas. I recommend my Perfect Brow Wand, which comes in one universal neutral shade and has a built in highlighter.

  • Draw the brow filler along your brow bone. It doesn’t have to be perfect match to your eyebrows before treatment. We are striving to create the illusion of good brows, not an exact copy of your pre-treatment brows.
  • Brush through the brow filler lightly to soften the line.
  • Then draw the highlighter along underside of brows and blend in using your finger. The contrast of highlighter and brow filler will make the brows look even more substantial.

What if most of the brow is missing? How do we avoid a drag queen look?

· If you’ve lost most or all of your brows and the brow filler looks too much like makeup, then pat some translucent powder directly on the brows. This will make the brow filler look more like real hair.

Great tip! For eyelashes, do you recommend using false lashes to fill in?

If your eyelashes have thinned or disappeared:

· Do NOT use false lashes as a solution because when you’re in treatment you’re more susceptible to infection from the adhesive. False lashes are fine to wear for special occasions during treatment, but not every day. They can also be cumbersome and uncomfortable if you’re not used to them.

· Opt instead for eyeliner to fill in your lash line and create the illusion of a fuller lash line. Choose an eyeliner in either cake or pen or pencil. I find that liquid eyeliner tends to look like dried paint, especially when your lashes are sparse.

· Draw liner as close to roots of eyelashes and then smudge the liner with a cotton swab, your fingertip or a brush. A smudged liner will be softer and look more like real lashes than a hard line.

· Opt for a neutral liner like brown/black or mahogany. Black can be too harsh, brown too soft, so something in between is ideal.

· If you have enough eyelashes, apply mascara to upper lash line. Do not use water-proof mascara as it’s difficult to remove and you may pull out existing lashes when you remove it. Use standard mascara and very important to remove the mascara before bedtime every day. Leaving the mascara on can also damage or dry existing lashes.

I appreciate how Rami breaks the instructions down to simple steps we can all achieve, so that when we leave a room no one will ever imagine we said this:

Met Ball 2014: Diane Krueger

The Look: Sophisticated, Glamorous Hollywood

Miki and Diane went for a modern day take on a 40’s style hair look to complement Diane’s chic Jason Wu for Hugo Boss floor length gown. Inspired by the 40’s, Miki wanted to create a sophisticated yet sleek and glamorous look that falls right above the neckline.

Here’s how Miki created Diane’s look:

  • First prep clean hair with a tennis ball sized Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying it section by section throughout the hair for touchable volume, shine and texture.
  • On naturally dry hair, spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray throughout, to protect hair from heat styling, while adding shine. Then, blow dry for a soft look and feel.
  • With a middle part, begin to pull the hair back tightly starting at the nape of the neck, and secure it into a low ponytail.
  • To create texture, tease the ends of the ponytail and spritz with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray. After hairspray has been added, brush out the hair for touchable texture.
  • Wrap the low ponytail around a cylinder foam roll, until the ends meet, and it forms a circular, almost sculpture-like chignon just above the neckline. Fan out the bottom of the shape, and secure with pins underneath.
  • To finish, secure the chignon with elastic, and spray with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray for a polished and shiny end look.

Academy Awards 2014: Jared Leto

Along with inspiring her Oscar winning son with advice to “dream and then…do the work”, Constance Leto passed on some fabulous follicular finesse with that head of hair. Chase Kusero, who styled Jared last night with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series, shares with Solessence readers how to get the look at home or salon, through the power of product.

The Look: Natural, Air Dried Waves

Chase and Jared were originally planning on creating a wet side-parted low bun, but then at the last minute, they decided to embrace Jared’s iconic wavy hair and have him wear his hair down. This undeniably cool, rocker hairstyle gives him the classic but edgy look that pairs perfectly with his white Saint Laurent jacket. Jared’s hair look was a two-day process – Chase used the Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Collection the night before and then freshened up Jared’s hairstyle the next day with the ColorFinity Dry Shampoo.

Here’s how Chase created Jared’s look:

1. First prep wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Primer Spray, applying it throughout the hair to enhance your natural wave.

2. Then apply Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Pomade to the length of the hair, providing a flexible hold and soft, glossy curl definition. Create the desired part and let hair air-dry.

3. The next day, spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Dry Shampoo in Rich Darks to the roots to refresh your second day hair while protecting hair color.

4. Then spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to the ends to protect hair from heat before straightening it. Take several sections of hair and straighten for a smooth look.

Jared looks good reaching for an award or for a slice of pie.  You will too!

5.     When you begin flat ironing hair, work in small horizontal sections. This will give you more control over the sophisticated style.

6.     Using a 1Ž2 inch flat iron, straighten hair from the root to the middle of the shaft.

7.     Using 1 1Ž2 inch flat iron, straighten hair from the middle of the shaft through the ends to achieve a super sleek look.

8.     Once hair has been fully ironed, apply the Pantene Pro-V Stylers Flexible Hold Hairspray to the entire head. This will control the hair without disturbing the touchable, moveable style.

9.     To complete the look, work a nickel size amount of the Pantene Pro-V Stylers All In One Styling Balm through your palms and use throughout the hair. This will tame flyaways, and achieve shine definition without weighing hair down.

Grammys 2014: Beyonce “Drunk in Love” with Pantene hair

Who ruled the Grammys? Pantene hair, and Pantene Celebrity Stylist Kim Kimble shares with Solessence readers how to they did it!

GET THE LOOK

1. For a show-stopping wet, sexy look inspired by the 1920’s, start with clean, wet hair.

2. Next, work the Pantene Pro-V Curly No Crunch Curls Whip into hair from root to tip to define frizz-free curls. Then brush through with a paddle brush to create soft, piece-y waves, and scrunch hair to help keep its definition.

3. Spritz the Pantene Advanced+ Keratin Repair KeraGloss Oil Mist to add brilliant shine.

4. To go from sexy to modern ‘20s chic, dry hair with a diffuser. Point the diffuser toward your crown to keep hair smooth at the root and use underneath at the ends of hair to achieve volume.

5. Continue to scrunch hair until dry for added body. Use a 1/2 inch flat iron and wrap small pieces of hair around it to create additional soft waves, similar to a curling wand, to create a few additional waves.

6. Tame flyaways at the roots of hair by using the Pantene Pro-V Stylers Shaping Hairspray. It’s important this style looks messy and flawless, so a small amount of product at the crown is all you need.

7. Finish off the look with the Pantene Advanced+ Keratin Repair KeraGloss Oil Mist for shiny, effortless waves.

SAG Awards 2014: Lena Headey

Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend styled Lena Headey from HBO’s ‘Games of Thrones’ for the 20th annual SAG Awards

“I fell in love with Lena Headey’s Jenny Packham dress. I felt it had a 70’s vibe to it, so I wanted her hair to be a modern take on a 70’s style, and the high bun was perfect. Townsend shares the steps with Solessence readers.

Get the Look:

· I prepped her hair by adding a few drops of Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment and then blow dried with a round brush.

· Next, I sprayed Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo all over her hair to give the hair a cool texture

· Then I gathered the hair in a ponytail right at the crown of the head and braided the ponytail

· Once the braid was complete, I wrapped it around the base of the ponytail to create a bun and secured with bobby pins.

· I finished by spraying Sally Hershberger Texture Blast all over and scrunched the bun with my hands to break it up a bit and add some hold.”

SAG Awards 2014: Cate Blanchett

Robert Vetica, stylist for Vidal Sassoon Pro Series, and Cate Blanchett went for a soft, 60s-inspired up-do to complement Cate’s light pink Givenchy gown that had a beautiful and soft Grecian feel. Inspired by Brigitte Bardot and Kate Moss, Robert wanted to create a wispy up-do that showed off the dress’s feminine silhouette and sequin-trimmed details.

Get the Look:

1. First prep wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying throughout the hair for touchable volume and hold.

2. Create a side part and then blow-dry hair with a small boar bristle round brush. Start by blow-drying hair in the front and create soft bangs. Once you have created the desired shape, clip the bangs in place while they cool. Then blow-dry the rest of the hair.

3. Once hair is dry, spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to protect hair from heat before curling it. Using a 1-inch curling iron, take the hair and curl approximately 8 sections. “You don’t need to separate each section perfectly,” says Robert “but instead you can take random sections since you’re curling hair to create texture and bend.” Once the hair has cooled, brush out the curls to soften the look.

4. Spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Dry Shampoo in Intense Blondes all throughout the hair. “Some people just apply hairspray to their roots, but I applied the Dry Shampoo all throughout the hair, similar to how you use hairspray, to create additional texture and volume.” After the dry shampoo, back comb hair a bit at the roots with a teasing comb.

5. Pull hair back into a loose low ponytail, using your fingers to create the desired shape. Twist the rest of the ponytail into a deconstructed bun and pin the look in place.

6. To finish, spray hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray to lock your look in place. Then spray hairspray onto your fingertips and nails, and using your fingers, apply the hairspray to the perimeter of the hair to tame flyaways and shape any loose pieces.

Golden Globes 2014: Taylor Shilling

Celebrity hairstylist Ryan Trygstad created the gorgeous look for Taylor Schilling of “Orange is the New Black” for the 2014 Golden Globes using Leonor Greyl products.

“We wanted to go with a look that was a bit 80s, late 70s.  Hair that was bigger on the bottom, but nothing too stylized.  Taylor is wearing this gorgeous emerald silk dress with gold heels and reminds me of Sharon Stone in Scarface, it has that sexy 70s vibe.

Get the Look:

I began by prepping her hair with Leonor Greyl’s Lait Luminescence on the ends to keep them soft.  Since her hair is on the finer side, I wanted to give her more volume all around.  I used the Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice, put some in my hand and worked it section by section into the roots. The Mousse is so easy to work with, wasn’t sticky at all, gave really nice body and shine, and smelled amazing. I didn’t apply mousse to the ends since we wanted to keep them really soft.  Then I blew out her hair with a small round brush to give a lot of body.

To create the shape to her hair, I prepped it with the Leonor Greyl Laque Souple and then used a 1” curling iron to create a loose wave all around.  I kept the ends kind of pointy for a more fluffy feeling.  After, I used the Lacque Souple again to set the entire look.  The hairspray is really light which we liked because we wanted to keep her hair touchable.

Next, I added in extensions that I put together myself and curled them.  I focused the curls more towards the bottom of the head to bring it up and create a triangle shape.  Then, I used the Leonor Greyl Natural Boar Bristle Brush and loosely brushed out the curls and backed combed a bit.  Keeping the top of the hair flat really finished out the shape I wanted to create.

Lastly, we used the Huile Secret de Beaute over her entire body for a bit of sheen.”

Golden Globes 2014: Emilia Clarke

Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend worked with Emilia Clarke from HBO’s ‘Games of Thrones’ for the 71st annual Golden Globes and shares his techniques with Solessence readers

This is the first time New Dove® Advanced Hair Series products are making an appearance on the red carpet. Comprised of the New Dove® Oxygen Moisture and New Dove® Pure Care Dry Oil collections, New Dove® Advanced Hair Series is a premium line of products that utilize the most advanced weightless moisturizing formulas and contain luxurious ingredients, designer fragrances and beautiful packaging. Launches this month!

Get the Look:

“I was so inspired by Emilia’s Proenza Schouler gown. The mix of embroideries looked like movement, so I wanted her hair to move beautifully as well.

– I prepped her hair by adding a few drops of the new Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment in her damp hair and combed through. It is loaded with African macadamia oil which is so nourishing for the hair.
– Next, I sprayed the new Dove Oxygen Moisture Root Lift Spray to the roots and blow dried with a round brush.
– Then, I took 3-inch sections of hair and wrapped each section around a 1 1/2inch curling iron. The large barrel creates bends in the hair instead of curls.
– When all the hair had been through the iron, I sprayed Oribe Dry Texture Spray all over to give the hair great texture.
– I finished by taking a few more drops of the new Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment in my hands and then raked it through her hair to give the hair tons of shine without weighing it down.”

Golden Globes 2014 : Emma Watson

Golden Globes presenter Emma Watson twists it up

It was the first time for Emma Watson attending the Golden Globes, and showing up as a presenter must have been magical. The occasion called for a classic Hollywood look with a slight twist. Vidal Sassoon Pro Series stylist Shelley Brien knew just how to compliment Emma’s night and special Dior orange and navy dress/pant suit (also deemed reverse mullet dress) with suede shoes.

Get the Look:

To show off the dress’s low back, Shelley thought a chic chignon would be the perfect style to complement her modern look. Emma’s striking look was the biggest fashion statement on the red carpet!

Here’s how Shelley created Emma’s look:

1.First spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to damp hair. Take a medium sized boar bristle round brush and blow dry hair so that it’s straight and smooth.

2.Once hair is dry, create a side part and then spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Dry Shampoo in Rich Darks to the roots to create extra volume.

3.Backcomb the hair near the front of your face to create texture and then brush all the hair back until it’s smooth. Maintaining the side part, pull hair back into a low ponytail and then wrap hair loosely into a chignon. Wrap hair similar to a bun and then pin in place.

4.Pull a few pieces of hair in the front and tuck behind the ear to create a more modern, tousled look.

5.To finish, spray hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray to leave it with a sleek, finished look.

Golden Globes 2014: Kate Mara

The striking Kata Mara gets her makeover with French cosmetics love from Orlane

Celebrity makeup artist Coleen Campbell-Olwell created Kate Mara’s look for the 2014 Golden Globes using Orlane products.

Get the Look:

“For Kate’s look tonight, she’s wearing a gorgeous silver/gray, structured gown.  We wanted her look to be a bit more intense and her skin to be luminous and glowing.

I started with the Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream and massaged a liberal amount into her skin so it would be really hydrated.  Then, I applied the Absolute Skin Recovery Eye Contour around the eyes the keep the skin really smooth.  This product is really great for prepping the eyes for concealer and skin we were doing an intense eye, we wanted to area to be nice and smooth.

When applying her foundation, I mixed the Chanel foundation with 1-2 drops of Orlane’s Morning Recovery Concentrate and applied with a sponge.  The Morning Recovery Concentrate gives the foundation an instant radiance and adds more luminosity to the skin.

I then contoured the cheeks just a little bit with the Orlane Bronzer using a swirling motion with the brush so that there wasn’t a concentration of color.  We didn’t want a bronze look at all so we just added a bit of the bronzer for more depth.  To add a bit more color, we used a soft rose blush on the apples of her cheeks.

For her eyes, I first used Antonym’s Certified Natural Eye Pencil in Noir on the waterline and along the top of the lash line to add more intensity to the eye. That was blended out to create a smokey effect. I then added a navy and gray shadow along the top of the eye and a little bit underneath, close to the bottom lash line. To finish the eye, I used my favorite mascara Orlane’s Volume Care Mascara. This mascara is AMAZING and helps to give great depth and length.

Then I used the Dior Eye Shadow Styler to give her more arch in her brows. It also helped to give them a fuller look.

To highlight the corner of her eyes and above the cheekbone, I used the Highlight Care Brush.

As for her lips, I just added a nice balm to compliment to already beautiful lip color she has.”

Orlane products are available at www.orlane.com

Her look was made complete with a silver J Mendel dress, Smythson clutch, Lorraine Schwartz jewels, and Charlotte Olympia shoes.  Stunning!

Cate’s classic and captivating hairstyle is truly timeless and complements her Armani Couture black lace dress with a low back. To finish the look, Robert tucked her hair on the left side to showcase the gorgeous Chopard earrings.

1.First prep damp hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying throughout the hair for lift and hold.

2.Create a low side part and then starting in the back, take a medium boar bristle round brush and blow dry hair down and away from the face, keeping hair flat. Apply a bit more mousse to the front of your hair to help shape your style while giving extra hold to your look.

3.Once hair is dry, spritz Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to protect hair before curling it. Using a ¾ inch curling iron, take hair in the back of your head, separate into 2 inch sections and curl.

4.Once the curled hair has cooled, backcomb to create texture and roll hair up into an “underwrap” style, pinning the look into place. Once all the hair has been rolled and pinned, pull a few pieces of hair from the “underwrap” to create a natural look with a little texture.

Supermodel Gisele the new crowning glory for Pantene

For more than a decade, women around the globe have been using the phrase “I want Gisele hair” to describe their ultimate hair inspiration. Beginning in January 2014, Pantene, the world’s #1 hair care brand*, and one of the world’s most recognized supermodels, Gisele Bündchen, are coming together to create a match made in hair heaven. Bündchen will appear in all elements of the brand’s holistic marketing campaign, including TV and print advertising, in-store displays, iMedia and public relations outreach. The international supermodel has been representing Pantene in Brazil since 2007.

“Gisele is truly a woman who has it all – not only does she have one of the most iconic heads of hair in the beauty world but she is also a true role model with a huge heart,” says Kevin Crociata, Marketing Director of North American Hair Care at Procter & Gamble. “We want to celebrate Gisele not only for her beauty, but also her genuine passion to empower women to be their best selves. Her tremendous career accomplishments, her success as a mother of two wonderful children, and her ongoing philanthropic work are an inspiration for women to be beautiful both inside and out. We are proud to now have her as part of our North American Pantene family.”

“I feel my hair has been through it all– from being styled more than ten times in one day to enjoying the sun and surf with my children – and Pantene has helped to keep it healthy with every wash, no matter what the day may bring,” says Bündchen. “I love that Pantene not only stands for healthy, strong hair, but also encourages women to give back specifically through a program like Pantene Beautiful Lengths.”

Gisele Bündchen will be the face of the new Pantene campaign debuting in January 2014, which will be the launch of Pantene‘s NEW first-ever, clinically-tested, anti-oxidant damage-blocking technology (EDDS). This damage blocking technology targets, captures and helps reduce copper build-up on hair to help prevent oxidative damage, which over time leads to a new dimension of strong, healthy hair. This technology will be across most Pantene shampoo formulas and works to preserve the long-term health of hair.

Pantene will also launch the NEW Damage Detox Collection, designed for women in need of an elevated level of damage repair looking to essentially ‘reset’ their hair, is the first-to-mass detoxifying shampoo, conditioner, and treatment system that cleanses impurities, protects from oxidative damage and provides shine.

Oscars 2013: Living Proof styles Natalie Portman

Living Proof Celebrity Hairstylist Chris McMillan was inspired to keep Natalie Portman’s hair chic and simple, channeling a Richard Avedon, 1960s feel for the Academy Awards. Clothing stylist Kate Young shared the maternity Dior dress the possibly pregnant Portman would be wearing, and it took off from there.

“Natalie said that from the front it looked like she’d cut her hair short, and then from the back you saw this beautiful French twist. She called it a fakeout short haircut, which she loved.”

Try this look at your salon or at home:

Apply Living Proof Prim Style Extender while hair is still damp
Blow dry with a round brush – (McMillan recommends YS Parks, a line of Japanese brushes he calls “just unbelievable”)
Create a classic French Twist using bobby pins and teasing to give a bit of cushion.
Tip: Place lower on head to create a beautiful shape from the back
Use Hold Firm Hairspray to smooth and create a chic and modern look

SAG 2013: Jennifer Lawrence, Dove Hair, Dior, Chopard, Jimmy Choos and…walking pneumonia?

Jennifer Lawrence could not miss the 19th annual SAG Awards.  Even walking pneumonia couldn’t keep the twice nominated “Silver Linings Playbook” (and winning) actress away, and she still managed to look stunning while under the weather.

Decked out in Christian Dior Couture, she graced the gown with a 38-carat diamond necklace, emerald-cut 6-carat diamond studs, and a diamond ring , all from Chopard. Her Jimmy Choo “Tease” sandals graced her feet, but it was her cascading curls that gave her a kiss of health.

Dove Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend gives Solessence readers the background for his inspiration and steps so you can try this at home or for your stylist at the salon:

“For the Screen Actors Guild Awards I was inspired by Old Hollywood glamor, so I wanted Jennifer’s hair to show that influence and inspiration, but I wanted it to be young and very modern as well.

– To get her side swept waves, I started by applying a nickel size amount of the new Dove Color Care Leave On Conditioner into Jennifer’s damp hair; she’s colored her hair so much lately so her hair needs added moisture and protection.

– Next, I loaded her hair with the Dove Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse and blow dried with a large round brush. To give her hair a loose wave, I wrapped sections of hair varying from 2 to 5 inches around a 1 1/4 inch curling iron, leaving the ends out.

– Then, I took a small amount of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands, rubbed my hands together, and then raked my fingers through the waves to break them up and give the hair amazing shine.

– I then took the hair from the right side, twisted it, and then pinned it in the back with a few bobby pins. To give the hair a cool, lived-in texture I sprayed Oribe Dry Texture Spray from mid-length to ends and scrunched with my hands.

– As always, I finished by spraying Dove Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray liberally all over to keep her hair in place all night and give the hair even more shine.”

Bang! Bang! Get Michelle Obama’s fabulous fringe, courtesy Fekkai Hair

First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the new year with a bang (literally!) She updated her signature layered bob with a face-framing fringe that, just like her fashion sense, is setting a new bar for White House-chic. Fekkai stylist Lindsay Block gave us her insider tips on how she recreated FLOTUS’s look on a Fekkai model:

Get the look:

1. Start by washing hair with a protein-infused shampoo and conditioner. Lindsay used PrX Reparatives Shampoo and Conditioner to nourish strands and ensure sleek, soft hair.

2. Lindsay recommends having a stylist cut bangs that will frame and compliment your face. Complete the the cut by trimming split ends and requesting long layers to add volume and body.

3. Blow dry hair straight using a large round brush and go over strands with a flatiron once hair is completely dry for a sleek look.

4. Using your hands, apply Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Crème to keep bangs looking shiny without weighing them down.

5. Lightly spray the entire head with Fekkai COIFF Sheer Hold Hairspray for a flexible hold on your new look!

She’s got the look: Connie Britton, Golden Globes

Celebrity hairstylist Rod Ortega created Connie Britton’s classic 1940’s old Hollywood look for the 2013 Golden Globes

I love Connie Britton as an actress, but I’ve also long envied her hair.  Inspired by Rita Hayworth’s look in ‘Gilda’, celebrity hairstylist Rod Ortega used luxury hair line Leonor Greyl to style Britton’s gorgeous, long locks.  Lucky us, Solessence readers get the steps to recreate this look!

Get this look at home

  • Dampen hair and prep it with Leonor Greyl’s Serum de Soie Sublimateur on the ends.
  • On the roots, apply Leonor Greyl’s Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice. Ortega used both of these products together to guarantee healthy, high shine, and movable hair through the evening.
  • Begin blow drying the hair with a round boar brush, smoothing out the hair and finished drying it
  • Before using a heat styling tool, Ortega recommends using Leonor Greyl’s Spray Structure Naturelle. “This setting spray is very important because it’s going to give the hold for the style.”
  • Use a 1-inch curling iron and set the hair with the setting spray.  Let hair cool and brush the waves out with a large paddle brush into beautiful, shiny waves.
  • Secure the waves with Leonor Greyl’s Lacque Souple, a couple of pumps of the Leonor Greyl Spray Structure Naturelle to finish the look.

This is one of my favorite luxury lines, and you must treat yourself to it this year.  Leonor Greyl is available at WWW.leonorgreyl-usa.com

She’s Got the Look: Lea Michele – SAG Awards

“I was so inspired by Lea and her Atelier Versace gown and wanted to give her a hairstyle that was soft, sexy, and touchable.” ~ Dove Celebrity Hair Stylist Mark Townsend

Lea Michele took the #1 spot for most mentioned celebrity during SAG

Lea Michele was the belle of the ball at tonight’s SAG awards and her gorgeous mane of hair was the crowning glory.  Lea’s tresses were treated with products from the new Dove Style+Care collection by stylist Mark Townsend.  The products are rolling out in stores now, but most won’t even hit the shelves until March.  Here’s how you can get this tousled look at home:

  1. Start by applying a large dollop of the new Dove Style+Care Nourishing Amplifier Mousse to damp hair and blow dry with a large round brush for volume.
  2. Next, take a dime-size amount of the new Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands and rub them together to warm up the product, then rake hands through hair. Townsend says, “I am obsessed with this cream; it gives the hair amazing shine and separation, and also nourishes the hair too so it’s like having a styling product and a conditioner in one bottle.”
  3. Pull hair into a loose bun to set a loose wave in hair. Then, let the hair down and spray Oribe Après Beach Spray all over to give the hair that great sexy “second-day” hair.

Just before Lea left for the red carpet, Thompson finished her hairstyle by spraying the new Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray all over to keep her hair in place without it looking stiff or crunchy.”

Hours later, her hair is still looking amazing on the dance floor, as you can see in this photo shared on Twitter:

Look for the new Dove Style+Care products coming out over the next month.

Hot Trend: Black-Tie Hairbands at MET 2011

Elettra Wiedemann 2011 MET Ball headband glam by Devin Toth, Ted Gibson Salon NYC

Last week we looked at fashionable, sporty headbands  for working out and casual wear, but did you ever think a headband could top off a black-tie look?  Devin Toth of  Ted Gibson Salon gives Solessence readers a step-by-step on how he created this fabulous look for Elettra Wiedermann (yep, Isabella Rossellini’s daughter wearing a dress of her grandmother’s, Ingrid Bergman  reworked by Prabal Gurung) from MET ball 2011:

  • Prep hair with Ted Gibson Hairsheets (they tone down static and add conditioning shine at the same time)
  • Blow out using a small, round brush for volume
  • Set hair using a 3/4″ curling iron and work Beautiful Hold hairspray through waves to keep it looking more sexy and fun than bridal/prom

Once her hair was ready, Devin completed the look this way:

I had her look up and blew her hair towards her crown which created a very loose, soft, upstyle.  I then pinned it into a high chignon, covered by waves.   I finished by accenting her hair with 3 Maison Michel head bands and a final spritz of Beautiful Hold hairspray.

I love how the metallic bands set off the Grecian look of this dress.  Maison Michel headbands are accented by shells, jewels, feathers or comprised of entire multi-strands of pearls.  Elettra’s thin bands with gleaming accents sets off the pretty look, helps keep her hair off of that beautiful face and dresses up the entire outfit. You definitely want to try this.

A Little About Devin Toth

Lead stylin’ backstage at the Lela Rose show (Fashion Week, New York f/w 2011)

Devin’s mother is a hairdresser, and the first to inspire him to get into the industry.  He specializes in cutting and styling, and in the 5 years that he’s been at Ted Gibson has styled hair for fashion week, celebrities, tv, magazines, weddings, red carpet events, and for the girls in his chair at the salon.  He’s considered one of the next generation of superstylists.  Book your own appointment with him at Ted Gibson NYC 184 5th Ave New York, NY 10010-6045 – (212) 633-6333

Moroccan Oil Shampoo & Styling Cream

It started as a sad two weeks for Solessence. First, I’ve been using this Moroccan Moisture Repair Shampoo because after a stint with ombre, my ends were getting a bit dry. Oh, the shine and the softness were divine! But not realizing I was slipping into a depression that was leading to what is almost hair suicide, as I was begging for a perm over the last several days.  Where did this come from? It hit me today as I went back to Leonor Greyl that the Moroccan shampoo is just too smoothing for my hair. However, if you’ve got a noggin’ that can wear it flat, you will love this stuff:

I fared much better with this styling cream. You can feel in the consistency that it is easily absorbed into the hair strands, wet or dry. I found two pumps were best for my hair, and I kept it mostly in the lower 1/3rd of my strands. No weighing down, actually allowed for a bit of lift.

The great thing about this product is the versatility. Mix a pump of this with a pump of Moroccan Oil to get super sleek, shiny straight hair with just a flat iron.

Two thumbs up for conditioning and styling.

She’s Got the Look: Dianna Agron, Golden Globes

Last night was a good night for Glee’s Dianna Agron – she not only hit the Golden Globes red carpet looking smashing styled by Pantene’s celebrity hair stylist Danilo – she also took home a win in Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical).

Danilo focused on complimenting Agron’s J. Mendel dress with a half-up glamour style that would look good from all angles, look loose, but wouldn’t be something she’d have to fuss with fixing – “It was very simple, very pretty hair that was clean, contemporary Hollywood glamour.”

This is a personal style I love to wear, and Danilo shares with Solessence readers how he recommends getting this look at home:

1)      Start with freshly-washed, towel-dried hair so it’s clean for styling.
2)      Mist your hair with the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Heat Protection & Shine Spray for a conditioning base, and then spray the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Root Lifter Spray Gel on your roots to prep hair for volume on top.
3)      Blow dry your hair, then use a dollop of the Pantene Pro-V Restore Beautiful Lengths Smoothing Balm to coat each section of hair before applying heat from the iron.
4)      Using a medium-to-large curling iron for the glamour set, curl hair down and under before setting to cool.
5)      Once hair has cooled in the set (10-15 minutes), release the curls and brush through to reveal voluminous waves.
6)      Lightly spread more of the Smoothing Balm through your waves as needed to clean up the slides and tame fly-aways.
7)      Part your hair to the side of your preference, smoothing hair back on each side with your fingers, and pin back with your hair pieces.
8)      Pull the remaining hair forward, shaping hair to appear full out of the hair pieces so the waves fall in front of your shoulders for a soft, elegant look.
9)      Use a finishing spray like the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Professional Level Style Shaping Hairspray on the front and sides of hair to lock in loose curls. Leave the back curls alone so they keep their flowing movement.

She’s Got the Look: Katy Perry Wins People’s Choice Awards

Danilo created a beautiful classic body set on Katy, a style that “she always loves so much.” They decided on full waves to complement her strapless Betsey Johnson dress for a “sophisticated, cutie-pie” style for the evening.

Katy Perry wowed the audience, and clearly the people, winning two People’ Choice Awards (Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Online Sensation) and major style points in a dress by Betsey Johnson and hair styled by Pantene Celebrity Stylist Danilo.

Danilo shares the steps he used on Katy Perry with Solessence readers so you can duplicate at home:

  • Katy arrived on the scene with freshly washed, towel-dried hair so Danilo had a clean base for styling.
  • He first lightly misted her hair with the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Heat Protection & Shine Spray to wet and condition, then focused on prepping her roots for the voluminous style by spraying them with the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Root Lifter Spray Gel.
  •  Danilo then blew her hair out and, once dried, rubbed a small dollop of the Pantene Pro-V Restore Beautiful Lengths Smoothing Balm section-by-section before he applied heat from the curling iron.
  • He used a medium-sized curling iron to set each section and sprayed the Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Professional Level Style Shaping Hairspray over the set before letting it cool for five minutes.
  • He then released her hair, brushed it gently, and “let her hair fall very full and wavy.”
  • He parted her hair to the side with lift in the front, and left her remaining curls big and loose for the final finish.

Pantene Gets Tangled in Beautiful Lengths Campaign

Disney’s “Tangled” is the modernization of the story of Rapunzel, and what a tale her 70 feet of hair tell! Pantene has partnered with Disney to spread awareness of the Beautiful Lengths program that creates free wigs for people who have lost their hair during cancer treatment.

The saying is hair is the crowning glory, right? Get involved in a project that makes others feel like royalty when they could really use a boost.  Your part is growing enough hair to donate.  Don’t worry – you don’t need 70 feet.  It takes six ponytails of hair at least 8″ long to make one wig, and wig construction takes about six months.  Why not pledge this process with 5 of your friends?  It will be fun to realize at the end of the journey that you’ve donated enough for one full wig!

Is the thought of getting your hair donation ready still a bit overwhelming? Pantene’s celeb stylist Danilo gives a step by step so that you can confidently grow your hair long, strong, and Beautiful Lengths ready:

  • DO use a conditioner after every wash to help keep hair moisturized and protected against damage.
  • DON’T use a brush on wet hair when you step out of the shower; once hair is washed and conditioned, use a comb with smooth, wide-set teeth to gently detangle hair, working from tip to root.
  • DO use a spray, leave-in conditioner for extra protection when using heated hair appliances.
  • DON’T attempt to blow-dry soaking wet hair immediately; to expedite your blow-out process and help prevent thermal damage, towel-wrap your hair for 10-15 minutes and remove excess water before using a blow-dryer.
  • DO look for new technology in your drying and styling tools to help minimize damage.
  • DO use a root-lifter spray to achieve volume; avoid excessive teasing of hair, as it can uplift cuticles, making them fragile and susceptible to breakage.
  • DON’T overbrush hair; despite the common myth that 100 strokes a day are good for hair, this can lead to breakage. Regular, gentle brushing promotes hair health and natural oil distribution.
  • DO use deep-conditioning treatments once a week, or as often as needed, to help minimize split ends and keep hair in top condition.
  • DON’T wait more than eight weeks to get hair trimmed; regular salon visits are essential in keeping hair healthy and beautiful.

I’d also add that taking Biotin and/or pregnancy vitamins helps tremendously.  Keep in mind that hair growth tends to slow a bit during winter, so don’t get frustrated.

For more details on how the process works, visit Pantene’s site

She’s Got the Look – Katy Perry American Music Awards 2010

Blushing bride Katy Perry took the stage at the AMA show styled by Pantene Celebrity Stylish Danilo. This contemporary Hollywood look adds volume to long locks and is flattering to a number of faces. It’s also easy enough to try at home with these step-by-step instructions from Danilo:

  • Wash hair to start with a clean base.  Danilo prefers clients wash same day, and used Pantene Pro-V Fine Flat to Volume Shampoo and Conditioning to cleanse and remove buildup.
  • Before the blowdry, apply Pantene Pro-V Fine Heat Protection & Shine Spray to protect against heat.  Don’t use a heavy hand – only a fine mist is needed.
  • Section hair out and spray with Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Root Lifter Spray Gel.  This will give you the weightless volume combined with body and shine.  Blow dry hair focusing on base to give height.
  • After hair is completely dry, use a medium curling iron and spiral curl each section.  Lightly spray with Pantene Pro-V Touchable Volume Hairspray, pin curls up and let cool.
  • Once curls are cool, remove and gently brush out so that the wave pattern is present.  “What I love about this look is that the wave is at the bottom, opposed to a retro look where the hair is curled under.”
  • Finish with Pantene Pro-V Touchable Volume Hairspray

Review: Corioliss Classic Pro Flat Iron 1″ & Giveaway

An economical entry to flat ironing

corioliss_review_misikko
Misikko asked me to review their highly rated entry flatiron this summer, so when I didn’t receive it I thought it a little curious, but it happens. Lo and behold, the box (and a few others) were lost – for two months. We started working the tresses right away…

We tested the Corioliss on a client with shoulder length virgin hair that was “pool hair” – that shiny, doll look you get from a summer of chlorine. The flatiron had no problems heating up and left her hair smooth and shiny with a single pass.

The Good:

  • Attractive design
  • Sturdy plates
  • Heats to 410*, worked quickly

If you have very Curly Hair:

  • Weight: This is not as light as a high end pro iron. For someone with very kinky curls, or hair that is resistant to straightening this could be a little heavy because it always takes longer to do your own hair.

This flatiron retails on the website for $89.99 at the time of this review and is best for someone with straight or mildly wavy/curly hair, looking to get an inexpensive but quality flatiron.

Misikko has great inventory on various flat irons, hair dryers, etc.  Check out the site for good information on the tools they carry.

Giveaway

CONGRATS TO JILL Jill MYRICK who was randomly selected from all entries for the Corioliss Flatiron from Misikko!  Please send me your name, address and phone number to solessencenews AT gmail DOT com and we’ll get your flat iron sent to you.   Thank you to everyone for participating!

Does the above description sound like your hair?  Would you like a Corioliss of your very own?  Follow these easy steps for entry:

1. Comment on why you need this flat iron on this post

2. For additional entry, Like on Facebook, Solessence and comment why you need this flat iron!

3. For additional entry, follow @misikko and @solessence on Twitter

  • Tweet “Follow @solessence for @misikko Corioliss giveaway!”

4. For additional entry, Like on Facebook, Misikko

Recipient will be selected September 19th.  Good luck!

Dove’s “Real Women Get Red Carpet Ready” Party

rcrA couple of weeks ago I hosted a “Real Women Get Red Carpet Ready” party, sponsored by Dove to get word out about the new Ultimate Visibly Smooth.  It was a blast!  There was a beautiful spread of Mediterranean foods, sushi and salmon, fruits, sparkling waters, sodas.

solessence_doveredcarpet_1And by me, I mean we, the amazing women I work with.  Peggy and the stylists that stayed to show their stuff rocked the night.

A second big shout out goes to the women that attended.  Real women.  Beautiful women.  Busy moms by day, they also share a passion for – oh, I won’t spoil it – you’ll have to watch the video.  But a great time was had by all.  The girls got their hair and nails did, the swag supplied was useful and loved (you’ll see).

The festivities were all captured on Flip supplied by Dove.

How real can you get?  These women were not afraid to be on camera sans makeup and hair done.  Comfortable beauty.

Thank you ladies and thank you Dove!

America’s Beauty Show Sleeper Hit – Bling String Tinsel Extensions

While the hot pro offerings at America’s Beauty Show were L’Oreal ‘s INOA coloring system and CND’s Shellac (a product five years in the making – more to come), one of the sleeper hits was a super simple idea that is available to the public: Bling String.blingstring

Bling String is little more than tinsel applied as a hair extension, but as the day wore on it was clear something was appealing to the audience.  Almost everywhere I turned I saw little glimmers of light in hair.  Look! Shiny! So Pretty!  When I chanced upon the booth, I got in line:

Applying Bling String yourself looks like a bit of a challenge, but to have someone else weave a few strands into your style shouldn’t be a problem. Bling String should then be cut to flatter your style and blend, not lay directly on top of the hair.  I’m sporting copper to match my gold/red/copper colors and I am stopped everywhere I go and asked about them.

They really do withstand washing, blowdrying, brushing.

This product is an As Seen On TV item but their video doesn’t do the product justice.

Hair Trends: Celeb Stylist Hallie Bowman Predicts

bio-large-hallie1Hallie Bowman, Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, shares an inside look at what to expect.

“Last season, we saw a lot of conventional looks – super sleek, tamed texture, perfect twists and classic chignons. When I think spring, I think unexpected playfulness, so I’m excited that the hair trends I’m seeing are in sync with the essence of the season. Classic styles will go to the extreme or, as I like to think, depressed winter hair is finally ready to be exposed again, yet looks will still maintain a genuine romantic feel that reflects the positive mood of warmer weather.”

  • wildhairExpect to see classic looks, deconstructed. Everything from deeper, more oddly angled side parts to random messy strands off to the sides will be added to enhance those been-there-done-that styles.
  • textureMy term for a favorite trend I’m seeing – “Urban Romantic.” Hair is tightly pulled back in a pony with lots of wisps in front to frame the face. Instead of a completely sleeked-back method, adding texture can show off your personality. Crimp for attitude, wave for elegance or spiral for romance – style how you feel!
  • 42-15194400Lots of frizz will be in, frizzy curls included. Don’t bother repressing wild texture: embrace it, live it, love it. Free your frizz with intention and purpose, but don’t forget to polish your ends, try the Pantene Pro-V Smooth Serum, as you don’t want to lose total control.
  • sjp_madonna_bow_ss10Bows will be out in full force for spring, think huge 80’s-style Madonna bows. To counter an angelic sentiment bows usually portray, it’s time to be clever with your bow style. Disheveled, punky hair surrounding the bow gives a carefree, yet put-together look all at once.
  • bighairbangsBe prepared for the relapse of the thick, heavy eyelash touching bangs…it’s coming back.
  • CynthiaRowleyRW150loresThe most playful trend I’m seeing – especially with the younger crowd – touches of pastel colors in hair. Take a section of hair underneath your nape, bleach it a pastel color and, voila, it’s a hidden treasure! Ashy colors like lavender, blue and purple tones will be popular.

She’s Got the Look: Diane Kruger’s Updo

dianekruger_oscars2010Oscars 2010 was the year of editorialized hair, which meant a lot of slick backed looks with (read: frizz). Diane Krueger had one of the prettiest takes – somewhat intricate with braids and ponytails and rolls.

Danilo, Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, styled this look for Kruger and shares how you can recreate this at home:

  • Cleanse and condition hair with the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Mist a leave-in conditioner and the Pantene Pro-V Volume Root Lifter Spray Gel all over damp hair
  • Blow dry hair upside down to create a voluminous base for styling
  • Section hair into a side part, divide into three sections (sides and back)
  • Braid side sections of hair back away from the face in an upward direction creating tightness on the sides
  • Pull the back section of hair into a high ponytail leaving volume on top
  • Split ponytail into two sections and twist in a rope-like formation, incorporating side braids into two back twists
  • Continually twist hair while pinning it into place as the twist braid is knotted up around itself
  • Mist hair with the Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray to lock style in place
  • Finish the look with a pretty broche to dress up the look.  Diane wore a Chanel Camelia Nervure brooch to compliment her Chanel gown.

  2. 2. Create texture within each section by using a combination of a curling iron and crimping iron for non-uniform waviness.
  3. 3. Place Wella colored hair pieces that have been crimped within sections of the natural hair so that the extensions blend in seamlessly.

  • System Professional Volumagic: Natural hold styling foam for long-lasting volume
  • System Professional Hypercurl: Provides texture and definition to curl patterns

Step-by-Step Styling

  1. 1. Prepare damp hair with System Professional Volumagic and blow dry with a large round brush, creating a soft wave and giving direction for the side part.
  2. 2. Rake hands through hair to loosen the waves, pulling to the side of the part and fasten the low side ponytail.
  3. 3. Leave hair on the opposite side of the ponytail loose around the face to balance the asymmetry of the look.
  4. 4. Lightly smooth System Professional Hypercurl on the length of the ponytail for separation and added texture.

Angelina Jolie – New Hair

cindycrawford_sydcurry copy

The revival of big blocks of chunky highlights (think young Cindy Crawford hair, ala Syd Curry) shown at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2010 has arrived early.

angelina-jolie-newhairAngelina Jolie was spotted with the new ‘do, but no confirmation on whether this is for a new movie role she is filming or to partake in trends.

What do you think of the new look? I just got foiled Tuesday.  For later this year, predictions are really bold colors, like bright yellow or pink.  That might be a good time to try the blue I’ve been coveting.

If this drastic change is intimidating for you (admittedly, it is often harder for brunettes to transition this look), a finger strand by the temple or nape of neck is a safe bet to start with.

‘Do or DON’T: Kate Gosselin

Kate Gosselin’s reverse mullet made the decision for a Halloween costume an easy one this year.

She’s turned a new leaf with the divorce though, and is sporting a new ‘do.  Or is it another Don’t?

BEFORE

AFTER

gosselin_hairI’d tell Kate to fire her stylist, but it appears she’s always had a love affair with iffy hairstyles.  Behold, Kate in a regular mullet (which explains why she was so comfortable with the reverse):

And an era appropriate look that was more flattering for her:

Hair Treatment: Macadamia Deep Repair Masque

macadamia_deeprepairmasque

Macadamia Deep Repair Masque is a rich, penetrating cream that instantly softens and creates shines.  This is a bonus, as the hair does not look or feel coated at all.  You may actually need additional styling products for lift, but you won’t have to worry about flyaways.

Lead scents are tea tree and chamomile, but whatever makes up the final mixture is absolutely intoxicating!

If you are in a situation where you need some dry hair help – stat! – this is fantastic.  Use 1x a week.

Macadamia is available for professional use at beauty supply stores, and at home use through Folica.com and Amazon.

Macadamia Oil line for hair comes on the heels of the more famous Moroccan Oil line, with small variance in pricing. This line seems to perform better than similar Marrakesh products.

Fall Hair Trends by Pantene Expert Hallie Bowman

global_shine_LRG

As we enter the fall season today, it’s important that we do what we can to help prevent further damage that’s already been done over the summer. Luckily, the color trends we will be seeing this fall are conducive to rehabbing your hair – it’s going to be all about giving your natural hair color a chance to shine and staying away from the harsh colors and bright platinum shades that are most damaging to your hair.

halliebowman“The days of striking, contrasting colors are gone this season,” explains Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, Hallie Bowman. “This fall people will be going back to their roots, or at least making it look that way. We’re going to see natural-looking tones to balance the more extreme hair styles that are going to be big, including mixed textures and nods to the 80s shapes.”

The Color Trends:

* Blonde: Platinum blonde is out and warmer, neutral tones are in. If you’re blonde Bowman recommends shades of sable, vanilla or mink. However, if you’re not ready to let go of your platinum locks, soften the look by adding some golden highlights.
* Brunette: Reddish or bluish browns are out and warmer browns are in. Shades like deep chocolate and chestnut are going to be all-the-rage; it’s all about making your shade believable.
* Redhead: Two words – true red. The key is to ask your stylist to stay away from blue and copper undertones, both of which reflect orange in the sunlight. One way to avoid orange is to add some highlights to cool down the shade.
* Black: Stay away from blue undertones and go for ebony to keep the shade natural-looking.

Maintenance:

Once you’ve achieved the shade you want, keeping your color looking fresh can be a challenge, but it doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot! Bowman recommends using a shampoo and conditioner system that is developed for color treated hair, such as the ones from Pantene

“I love the Pantene Expressions collection because it keeps hair color looking fresh, and helps reveal the three facets of hair color: tone, depth and vibrancy,” explains Bowman

The Pantene Expressions shampoos are formulated with a patented liquid crystal technology that helps repel water and condition hair to keep color radiant. The five collections are custom designed by shade – blonde, brunette, red, midnight and highlighting – to help color-treated hair maintain its vibrancy and multi-dimensional shine in between colorings.

The Pantene Expressions shampoos and conditioners retail for just $5.49 apiece at national food, drug and mass merchandisers, and online at drugstore.com.

Jason Backe – Hair color expert, CEO Ted Gibson Salon

An incredibly fun person, colorist Jason Backe.   Catch Ted Gibson live on E! today for the Grammys!

“The industry sometimes gets a bum rap of being superficial or being fake or being fluffy. But its really, from my perspective, incredibly powerful to boost your self confidence, to change the way you feel about yourself (through color) “

Jason Backe is color expert, CEO and half of the team that is Ted Gibson Salon, both at home and at the office. As co-owner of the salon with the most expensive haircut in the US, how do they deliver? Massclusivity is the key.

jasonbacke570

You have a pretty exciting career right now, several successful salons, and this all started in Minnesota, right?

JB: It did. I grew up in Northern Minnesota, by Duluth, in a town call Cloquet. I lived in Minneapolis for six years before I moved to New York. I went to the Aveda Institute back when it was called Horst Education Center, and I worked at the John English Salon for two years before I moved to New York. My life partner, business partner, best friend – all of that together – was one of my teachers in beauty school, Ted Gibson. Aveda wanted Ted to move to New York and that’s kind of how I ended up coming. I always envisioned my big move was going to be from Cloquet to Minneapolis. I never really thought I’d ever move to New York, he just asked and asked and asked and asked and finally I was “Ok, I’ll move to New York. But only for a year.” That was 12 years ago.

Initially was there a stumbling block?

Growing up I never thought I wanted to be in the beauty industry. I always thought I wanted to do PR or Communications or something like that. I went to college, different schools, for four years, changing my major all of the time. I never felt successful in that learning style, wasn’t good at taking the books home and studying. So I took a couple of years off and I traveled with a non-profit company, spent time in Europe and the US. When I settled down in Minneapolis again, I decided that I wanted to try something that was a little more hands-on learning. I either wanted to be a chef, or, I had a friend named Adam who was a hair dresser and he seemed to have a really fabulous life. I thought I could be a good hair dresser.

To be a chef, to go to a good school, I would have had to move and I had just settled in Minneapolis. So I decided, the best beauty school in the country was Aveda, and I decided to go to beauty school. The day that I walked in through the front doors I thought “This is where I want to be, this is amazing,” I fell in love with it right away.

It’s funny because my sister, a couple of years ago, made me a photo album. She’s a huge scrapbooker and she made me a whole photo album of my life. In it are these pictures of me, dressing her hair for prom, or her girlfriend’s hair for prom, or family friends for weddings. Even of me as a little kid, perming her hair. I was probably 9 years old, in our mom and dad’s kitchen. Looking back retrospectively, I’ve been involved my whole life, but I never thought of it as a career until I went to beauty school.

How did the salons come about?

Ted and I started talking about a salon when we were in Minneapolis. We’d looked at locations, picked out a name. When we came to New York, it was still a conversation we were always having. Ted ended up working for Aveda for 6 years at the store on Broadway. I did testing for them, education. I did as much as I could do without getting into management or getting into some kind of leadership, other than being a trainer for them. I reached a point where I was ready to leave the company and I was having a conversation with Ted. Either I would go to another company or we would branch out on our own.

Ted Gibson is the new stylist on TLC’s What Not To Wear

Ted had just started working with Angelina Jolie. She was his first really big celebrity client. She had just taken the blood off of around her neck (laughs), so she was still that “weird” girl nobody understood. She wasn’t the Angie we know today. It was a great time for him to meet up with her and it changed his career in that it became the perfect time to open up a salon. His name was already well known in the fashion & beauty industry in New York. It all made sense; perfect timing for my career, great timing for his career.

That’s how we opened our first salon. And at first we wanted a live/work space where we could say it was our apartment but really it was a salon, and people would feel like they were coming over to our house. Then we thought, “If we’re really trying to do this, let’s try to make an impact in New York City and compete with the big guns.” We were really inspired by the W Hotels. They had just started and were still sort of boutique-y feeling. There was a big trend toward boutique hotels that was happening all over. In New York at the time, all of the famous salons had, like, 50 chairs. Frederic Fekkai was in the Chanel building and had three floors in the Chanel building. The big, higher end salons were huge hair factories, and we were inspired by the boutique movement.

We found a space that was really open, and lofty, and decided to do twelve chairs in a really open space. Just make it really chic and comfortable and high end – but you know, I’m from Minnesota. I didn’t want it to be pretentious; I didn’t want it to be stuffy. When the girls came in, I wanted them to feel comfortable and pretty. That was the way we started the whole project.  Oh, I have a guest whose color is processing, I’ve gotta look at her highlights. (muffled, looks great, have Jen check to see if it needs a gloss and then give her an amazing blow out)

I love it, right in the middle of all of the action. What color are we doing?

That is Janet, she is a single process, level 8 blond with highlights on top so she looks really beachy and fabulous.

So you open this really new concept in New York. And it takes off…immediately?

tgs

We really got great press off the bat. We’re an interesting combination, being husbands, and work partners, and Ted’s celebrity career was really taking off. We got a lot of press right away and we had this little group of people opening up at the same time, and we all kind of got the same press together. It’s been fun to grow up together.

After all this time, how is it going back home, so to speak, to Minnesota?

I love it. My mom and my dad, sister and my grandma all still live in Cloquet. My sister and her husband have three kids and they live five houses down from my mom and dad. I like to go there 4, 5, 6 times a year so that I can hang out with the kids, see the family. It’s a great respite from NYC. They don’t care what jeans I have on. It’s great for my ego too because I go to Northern Minnesota and I feel like the greatest, fittest 40 year old in the world. I come back to New York and it’s O yeah, I’m just regular. But it’s a great balance for me to be with my family and hang out. Not have anything to do with fashion. Beauty. Work. Of course I still have my laptop and Blackberry, so I can stay in touch, but I love to go back. And I love to be able to do local media stuff when I’m in Minneapolis, or stop by John English Salon to visit the owners (although they’re never there when I’m there, I’ve run into them a couple of times). You know, it is just fun to go home and hang out.

Speaking about local media, you recently did a piece on going red.

I did.

It was fabulous! These women were completely transformed by what you did.

Thank you.

It wasn’t that they just got pretty, they looked like completely different people.

Thank you! I think that’s one of the things that I love about this industry. The industry I think, overall, sometimes gets a bum rap of being superficial or being fake or being fluffy. But its really, from my perspective, incredibly powerful to boost your self confidence, to change the way you feel about yourself, to celebrate a promotion or get through a breakup. You know, dump that man, change your haircolor. It’s really amazing how something as simple as changing your haircolor really transforms someone in ways that are unexpected.

Did you intend to go into color?

Growing up in Minnesota, everyone does everything (in my experience). In the salon I worked at, everyone did cut and color. Rarely were people specialized. I don’t know how it is now, but then, 15 years ago, everyone did everything. When I went to New York and worked at Aveda, they didn’t specialize, so I did everything. I was an educator for Haircutting and I did a lot of haircolor. A chunk of my professional profile was about haircutting and hairdressing.

When Ted and I went into business together, he doesn’t do any type of color and had already become known as the “hairdresser” so it made sense, if our salon was going to specialize, that I did color. It’s interesting because I always thought of it as not rocket science, not that complicated, all the same – you know, you’re working with hair depending on what you’re doing – and I felt I did a great job at both. Until I really started to focus on one thing, not being divided. That’s when my career really took off. Really when I focused all of my creativity and all of my energy into one end of the craft is when I really started to understand color in a new one.

I was Color Director at Clairol until last week. It was a highlight of my career, so great to work with that brand. The things I learned were things that I kind of knew – the power of hair color, and what it can do. But I was really snotty about being a salon hairdresser and expressing the belief that you should only color your hair at the salon and not at home. My relationship with Clairol really opened up my eyes to what amazing home products there are, and what amazing results you can get.

The makeovers that you were talking about that I did for Twin Cities Live were all with at home hair color. Every single step. So the truth is, you can get amazing results with product at home, or you can get amazing results with product at the salon. I really had a fantastic time at Clairol and cherish what I got to do, but ultimately it got really complicated for me to be exclusive to one brand with all of the opportunities that come with being part of Ted Gibson. It was amazing and I loved it and I’m ready for the next thing around the corner.

It’s a really fun time for me professionally, for Ted professionally, for the Ted Gibson brand. We’re experiencing what Ted and I call “Tremendous Velocity” where we’re just being as open as we can to as many opportunities as we can to share as much information as we can. To build this brand, we want to be able to take beauty and bring it to the women at home. Take that celebrity cache and bring it to the women at home. Bring it to my mom and my sister in Northern Minnesota, so that they can make the connection to the excitement of what we’re doing. Which is part of the reason we launched the Ted Gibson brand at the Target stores.

tedgibsonproducts

Let’s talk about that, because that’s a very accessible road to go down (for a high end line).

We’ll you know I’m from Minnesota and I love Target stores. When we wanted to launch the product, we knew we wanted to launch prestige and work our way to mass. So we started at Henri Bendel. Then we went to Saks. Then we went to Sephora. And then we went to Target. Target, I think, is really our customer. Our girls that come to the salon and spend $1500, hop in their Maserati or their Range Rover or whatever it is they’re driving, and stop at Target on the way home. The woman that colors her hair at home, the woman who spends a million dollars at the salon, the woman that never thinks about coloring her hair: All of these women love Target. For us it’s like the ideal place to bring Ted Gibson to the people.

I agree! Tell me about the products you’ll be carrying there. Tell me your favorites.

At Target we have 8 SKUs. We have about 25 in the line, but 8 at Target. My favorite is the Clarity Color Shampoo and Conditioner. Those are amazing for color treated hair. They have a color-protecting complex that actually helps the cuticle stay closed so you keep the color longer. It’s got a UV absorber that helps to protect your hair color from fading in the sun, and in addition to all of the magic it does, it just smells good. (laughs)

I also love the Beautiful Hold hairspray. It’s a new approach to hairspray because it doesn’t leave your hair crunchy or stiff. It just gives it really fabulous memory, so you can still run your fingers through your hair and it bounces back into the curl that was there or the smoothness that was there. It’s awesome.

In terms of trends, what do you see happening right now?

If you’re talking about a hairstyle, the thing we’re seeing most now is the grown out bob.
Sorry one second.. mixed with 873..87.

We’re getting all of your secrets here.

You’re getting all of my secrets! Do you know the blogger/web goddess extraordinaire Julia Allison?

Yes

Ok, she’s here right now and we’re coloring her hair.

Tell her hi – we were all talking about her hair before I got online with you. What is she doing?

Have you seen her since she’s been a redhead?

Yes, is she just touching up?

We’re just touching up the new growth and tinting her brows. She is so amazing. She is someone that sits in my chair and we can talk for hours.

She does have the gift of gab!

OMG, yes. Ok, so for trends – longish, it’s not really a bob, it’s not really longish either, it’s sort of clavicle length. I think that’s really chic and really modern right now. I think if you’re wearing your hair past, you know, even touching your bra strap, it’s way too long for right now. Long hair should be below your shoulders but above your bust line so it sort of falls in the middle, is where trend is at right now. I think if I see people with those super long extensions, I think it almost looks dated and old. It doesn’t look fresh to me. Bangs are still really hot, whether they are side swept or crescent shaped around your brows. Either one of those can be really modern right now.

Hair color, we’re seeing not a lot of gold. Staying away from the gold and seeing more neutral, more sand, that kind of stuff. And there’s never been a better time to be a red head, which is why it was so exciting to do those reds for the media in Minneapolis. Since red carpet season last winter, we’ve never seen more redheads on red carpets, on fashion campaigns. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of red for Fashion Week. So if you’re thinking of making a statement with your hair, red is the way to go.

We had some discussions about going red, and it is the hardest color to pick from. You can really get it wrong easily.

Sure. There are a couple of generalizations that help. The lighter your complexion, the more copper you can handle, more orange. The darker your eyes, the more you want to stay away from copper and go towards auburn and ruby shades. If you can follow that, you’re good.

What should people do with their eyebrows when coloring hair at home?

Wait until you are done, when it is shampooed out and blow-dried to see how the whole thing works. If you need to tweak them a little bit, you take a little bit of the color that you just put on your hair and you put it on your brows for two minutes and you take it off. But you only leave it on for a couple of minutes because you don’t want it to be matchy-matchy. You just want to take that edge off so that everything is believable. 2-3 minutes. You can always reapply if you want it to be more vibrant or brighter.

A haircut experience with Ted Gibson runs almost $1000,  (although you can book with other talented stylists) but he’s also the new celebrity hairstylist for  TLC’s What Not To Wear?   Check him out on the show, or feel inspired and see him in the salon yourself.

You can also book time for a great color with Jason Backe at one of three Ted Gibson Salons, contact:

She’s Got the Look – Kristen Stewart – MTV VMAs

New Moon premieres on 11/20, and Twilight’s Kristen Stewart was at the VMAs with her co-stars to promote in a classic yet edgy look styled by Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, Hallie Bowman.

kristenstewartvma2009

You can do this too! Here’s how Hallie created Kristen’s look:

1. Hallie started by shampooing and conditioning Kristen’s hair with a moisturizing formula to create a good base for styling

2. She began by cutting bangs to create roundness around the cheekbones, a look that is complimentary of her heart shape face

3. Hallie applied the Pantene Pro-V Volume Root Lifter Gel from root to tip to begin building volume, as well as the Pantene Pro-V Texture Spray Wax to make hair more malleable for styling

4. Then, she blow dried Kristen’s hair while brushing it away from the scalp, periodically flipping her hair over to ensure lots of volume at the crown

5. Hallie then pinned sections of her hair back with bobby pins to secure it away from the face, leaving some pieces around the face to give the illusion of a bob with bangs – a nod to the bowl cut, but with a modern feel

6. To polish off the look, Hallie used the Pantene Pro-V Smooth Serum to give Kristen’s hair long lasting shine for the night

Unsung Heroes: Suave Professionals Color Care

lukeoconnorUnsung Heroes is a place to discuss products that may miss out on glamorous promotions, but deliver on their promises.

Emmy nominated celebrity hair stylist Luke O’Connor, owner of LuKaRo Salon in Beverly Hills has gained a following for creating Debra Messing’s look on “Will & Grace,” and has styled Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Blake Lively, Becky Newton, Diane Keaton, Ashlee Simpson, Brooke Shields and Lucy Liu, among others. As spokesperson and consultant for Suave, he was live at BlogHer, doing what he does best. For the masses. I failed to get my hair done (yes, I was insane to miss the opportunity, and no, I don’t recall them ever taking a break), but I spent a good amount of time talking with other Suave reps about the new Professional line.

The Suave Professionals line is slated to work as well as a competing salon line with less cost. I left with a generous full size bottle of shampoo and conditioner, and Sleek Cream (to help with frizz – there! I said it!). The comparative salon brand for Color Care is Biolage.

I tried the Sleek Cream the next day and love the texture and ease of use.  It is of medium light texture, somewhere between a cream and a gel, it distributes easily.  I did continue to have mild flyaways, so it is possible I needed to use more.  Static is one of the toughest problems to combat with hair, so if you have a lot of issues during humidity you might need to go with a much stronger product.

In the end, it is the shampoo and conditioner that blew me away.

suaveprofessionalcolorcareThe shampoo definitely cleansed without stripping, but initially didn’t seem to work in as easily as Biolage  (I actually had some in the shower, and felt a little pang of regret not using ‘the expensive stuff’).  I want to note that after multiple uses, I didn’t seem to have this problem anymore, so perhaps it was battling some sort of build up.

The conditioner, on the other hand, was immediately soaked up in each strand.  By nature and chemical processing, my locks are conditioner thirsty, and if my hair takes product in easily I can usually tell it will be good for it. Just like Biolage, the consistency was a nice translucent cream that did not weigh the hair down.  Critical!

So what was the end result? Something I didn’t expect. I have some serious shine going on!  I can only guess it is the color protectant in the formulation that is making my hair looking as if it was freshly colored. You know, that bright, healthy, vibrant glow? My locks also felt incredibly soft. Fortunately, it wasn’t flat soft (I hate that) and I really could not stop touching my hair.

This was the first I’d heard about the Professional Series, which looks like a revision of a line put out around 2007.

Two thumbs way up for the 2009 version. I don’t know what performance and true color-treatment protection is like yet if used exclusively over a 30-day period, but it is well worth at least intermixing, if not going exclusive. At $3 a bottle, Suave has done a great job. www.suave.com

The line carries a number of products with corresponding salon matches for different hair types.  Find your type and treat yourself:

Humectant = NEXXUS Therappe
Color Care = Biolage
Damage Care = Redken Extreme
Vibrant Shine = Sebastian Laminates
Sleek = Matrix SleekLook
Volumizing =Matrix Amplify

Interview: Syd Curry – celebrity hair stylist

I am not about a blow dry ~ Syd Curry

He’s coiffed an incredible client list, from supermodels to award winning actors to the President of the United States. Now he’s opened a new salon in…Aberdeen, Mississippi? Find out who inspires Syd Curry and his take on stylists trying to make it into the business today.

This article is dedicated to Syd Curry’s mother, who passed away on March 7, 2009.

This is a combination of transcript from his interview on Solessence Radio and subsequent phone calls and emails.

Hi Syd. Today we’ve got you down in Aberdeen, Mississippi. First, I was wondering if you would give everyone a little bit of background on how you started. Of course, you are a celebrity hair stylist; you had a big break with Mariah Carey.

SC: I did have a big break with Mariah Carey, but I started my career years before her. I started beauty school when I was 16, got my license at 18, and moved to Hollywood from Simi Valley, this small little town in Ventura, California. I got my break from Chantal Cloutier, who owns the Cloutier Agency, and my first editorial was with Matthew Rolston [photographer], who was just starting at the time. I started my career with Paul Starr, who sadly just passed away a few months ago, and we started doing catalog. There really was no fashion work to speak of at all in LA, but there was a lot of catalog, which taught me everything I know. I was fortunate I got to work with girls like Gia, and Jerry Hall, and the young, pre-surgery Janice Dickenson – who is probably the best model I’ve ever watched work, by the way.

Those girls taught me what to do for a camera. I did that for years and years, and I went to Las Vegas to do one of my first videos for Buster Pointdexter, who is David Johanson, lead singer of the New York Dolls, and met my business partner and best friend, [celebrity makeup artist] Billy b. Twenty something years ago. Way longer than we care to talk about. And we became best friends. I found out he was from Mississippi, my whole family is from Mississippi, and we started testing together. I used to go and I’d sleep on his kitchen floor in New York and he’d come to LA and we’d do jobs for free, and years later, he started working with Mariah. They came to LA and he introduced us, and then we spent about the next four years traveling all over the world with Mariah, which was my really huge break.

Did you intend to break into music and fashion?

SC: Yes, absolutely. I like to cut hair, and I like to do color. But styling is always what I love. It’s what I’ve always been best at, and it lets you be creative. It’s what I always wanted. Right about the same time I met Mariah I met Sally Hershberger, who is a very famous hairdresser, who couldn’t do a job and recommended me to Cindy Crawford. At the time Cindy was hosting House of Style for MTV, and that really took my career to another level. She was at the height of the 90’s supermodel.

That was one of my favorite looks – I loved her hair.

SC: It was an amazing time. The 90’s were good to me. Many years before, like I said, there wasn’t a whole lot to do in LA, and I was never interested in living in New York, I don’t know why. And then everything changed.

What do you mean by that?

SC: Well, everything changed for LA. They started shooting fashion there. Then all of the magazines started putting celebrities on the cover. So LA became the place to be. The celebrity thing is a whole other story. It’s a lot of babysitting. It’s very fun, I love it, but you know, it’s a lot of babysitting to be perfectly honest.

You started beauty school at a very young age – 16. Were your parents supportive?

SC: My parents were very supportive of me going to beauty school. I didn’t do well in school and they were smart enough to know that my talents lay elsewhere and let me go to continuation school. At 16 I went to high school half day and beauty school half day. My ma passed away March 7 and she was my biggest fan. She NEVER got tired of telling people that I did President Clinton’s hair, even though she didn’t vote for him.

Did you have any professional challenges you had to overcome?

SC:Yeah. Well, it’s well documented, my drug addiction. I’ve been clean, in April; knock on wood, three years. I had a little drug problem that lasted 30 years. You know, it took its toll. And when I talk about this in the context of work, I don’t want anyone to think I’m glamorizing it or anything. But I was able to work. I was on heroin for 30 years. I was also on methadone for 20 of those years. And the methadone allowed me to not be sick at work, so nobody really knew. It had nothing to do with the business – I didn’t do it with anybody I worked with – it was my thing. A lot of people, when they talk to me about it they say, “Well it was the time, there was drugs on set.” I never did drugs on set. With anyone. Ever.

It all came crashing down at the end of ’99. It’s going to catch up with you sooner or later, and it caught up with me. I walked away from my career and didn’t work from 2000 until 2005. It was a very dark time. I thought my career was over for sure. Fortunately, I had a great agent then who realized there was a problem and stopped sending me out before I ruined my reputation. Billy b. thought I was dead. Nobody knew where I was, and Billy finally tracked me down. When I finally went into rehab I had my mom call him and he was just really supportive and there for me.

It was a long process, and when I got out, Billy introduced me to Patricia Field. My first job out of rehab was doing Pat’s hair for her Academy Award nomination for The Devil Wears Prada. What a way to comeback, right? You know, there’s a whole lot that goes into that story. It was a very dark time, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, but the business I’m in is very forgiving. People have been amazing, and welcomed me back with open arms, because it’s about me being clean and sober now, and doing a good job with what they hire me for.

And you are still very definitely in demand. Just last year you did the Oscars.

SC: Yes, I did Daniel Day Lewis for his Oscar win. Long story short, this past year Pat’s been my main client. I bought a house in Mississippi in Billy’s hometown and my whole family was from here. We opened this business, but my mother was also very sick and passed away this past March, just a couple of months ago, so I really focused on being back here with her. Sunday, in two days, I go back to LA to do some fun stuff. It’s an exciting time for me.
Let’s touch on that.

SC: We launched in January. This is Billy’s hometown, Aberdeen, Mississippi, and he’d been trying to get me back for years. I hadn’t been back to see my family since ’86. I’m the only one in my family not born and raised back here, and me and my mom moved back to be with her family. So I came back to Billy’s hometown and found a 102-year-old Arts & Crafts home and restored it and fell in love with it. Billy has a big old Victorian house and one day we were having dinner or something and we said “Why don’t we turn this into a salon?” Just kind of joking around – but we did it. You can see the gallery pictures on www.billyandsyd.com. It’s just great, very steel magnolias. It is a beautiful old Victorian house that we put our spin on. Well, Billy did, I don’t have the decorating gene. Billy’s the kind of person that walks in and says Tear that Wall down, put that up and I just go “ok.”

You’ve collaborated for years

SC: Yeah, close to 25 years

I was just thinking about this. I met him with Arianne Phillips, Madonna’s stylist, and I’m going to work with Ari who I haven’t worked with in, gosh, I can’t remember the last time I worked with Ari and Billy, all three of us. I’m going to do a fragrance campaign for Christian Audigier. The beautiful Guinevere Van Neesus for Numero with photographer Jeff Burton. I’m doing Numero with Ari, and I think Billy, or my friend Katy Young. And then I’m shooting Kathy Rodriquez, LA designer, and three models. She owns Resurrection Vintage stores, amazing stores. I’ve been doing her shows and campaigns and we’re shooting her for Vanity Fair.

With the traveling, how much time do you spend at your new shop? If people want to call up and book, what kind of schedule should they expect?

SC: Originally I was going to spend a week a month, but my house is done, I’ve got a new dog, and I’m getting to know family for the first time. So I’m really kind of here, and kind of loving it. I think this is going to be my base. I say that for now. I will always consider LA home. I was born in Santa Monica, my best and dearest friends are there, but I’m kinda loving Mississippi.

New experiences are good.

SC:I may be 500 pounds when I get out of here (laughs)

All of that southern comfort food

SC:Yes, all of that comfort food, fried which is my favorite. Fry it I’ll eat it.

Do you have a new favorite?

SC:Fried pickles.

Fried pickles?

SC:Yeah yeah , I love friend pickles. My dad always made them, and my mom, my mom moved to California and became my California beach girl and made everything out of a box. My dad fried everything. And down in Jackson, by Aunt Gertie’s house, is a great catfish place I’m in love with.

Do you actually fish yourself or just eat it?

SC:You know, I haven’t fished while I’ve been here, but I grew up fishing, I love fishing. We could walk to the lake. Kind of amazing, everybody should come to Mississippi and check it out. It’s not what everybody thinks. We get a bad rap here. And there’s some very stylish people. And the cool thing is, where we are, we’re about an hour and a half from Memphis. I’ve been getting people from Memphis, from Atlanta, from Nashville, from all over have been coming. Billy is very well known here and I’m kind of guilty by association.

Atlanta’s becoming the next hot beauty hub so I can understand the big traffic draw from there. What kinds of products are you using?

SC:I’m using everything that I love. I keep my backroom stocked with everything I like over the years. I keep (L’Oreal) Elnett Hairspray, I love Moroccan Oil, but we’re in this really small town and there’s not a lot of people who are going to want to spend money on Moroccan Oil, so business wise? It’s not a smart thing.

I love Paul Mitchell Super Skinny line, I love the serum, but you know, you can get it at the drugstore. So I’m not so focused on the product thing, I’m focused on what I use to achieve the look on women and then I tell them what to get. You know, you can get Elnett at Target! Aren’t you the one that told me? You did tell me that! I almost fell over, I was so excited.

Yes, you’re right (that was from a conversation in 2008. He’s got an good memory)

SC: I know who we didn’t talk about that I worked with this year – Tina Turner! That might have been the biggest highlight of my career. Little back-story: I never wanted to work with Ann-Margaret, Tina Turner or David Bowie because they are my favorite (celebrities). Tina Turner, I used to hitchhike to go see, by myself. Her music meant so much to me, and I didn’t want that rock star fantasy in my head to be blown. If they were jerks, I didn’t want to know it. Fast forward from age 15 when I used to hitch hike to, well, I just turned 55 this year. That’s a lot of years later. And I get a call to do her hair, and I’m like sure, why not. She was everything I wanted her to be. She had the (Rolling) Stones playing the whole time,

Were you nervous?

SC:No! Which is the cool thing about it. I’m old, you know? I’ve worked with the President of the United States. I’ve done Madonna’s hair. I’ve done a lot of work with nasty people, I’ve worked with amazing people, and when I was a mess, and younger, I would make myself sick being nervous. Things are so different now. You know what? I can do hair. And I go in and do my job.

I was nervous driving over but as soon as I met her she said “What do you think I need?” I told her and she said “You’ve done your homework” and I’m like, “Honey, I know every hairdo you’ve ever had” (laughs). She invited me to come sit on the couch, and I told her about all those times I went to see her as a kid, and what her music meant to me. It couldn’t have been more perfect.

I was talking about Paul Starr, and I hadn’t seen Paul for seven or eight years. He did her makeup, and so I got to spend two days with Paul. He passed away a couple of months later. It was a special memory, that whole job. Paul and I both loved her, and we both used to crack up and sing her songs, you know, lip sync with the little headphone sets. It was a full circle kind of thing.

You mentioned your resume, the names you can drop, yet you are so down to earth.

SC: It’s one of those things like at work, people are, “Well you’re really nice.” Well, why wouldn’t I be? I’m just a hairdresser. You know? It’s like most people think celebrities are going to be nightmares, but in fact, most are just regular people who happen to be famous.
Syd created the raven bob for George Michael’s video Father Figure

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of them that aren’t. But on the whole, there’s a handful of people who I won’t name, that I would never set foot in a room with again. But 85% of the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. They‘ve been great and decent and really fun. You know, even the drugs, all that stuff, I wouldn’t change a minute of anything. Because it’s all made possible what is happening today, which is living my life, enjoying success and a million things to be thankful for.

For people trying to become stylists today, what are the challenges?

SC: I think everyone wants to become hair and makeup artists now. First of all, we have to go to the times we are in. It’s hard out there for everybody now. To put it into
numbers, without saying what the numbers were, in the 90’s they threw money at us. Stupid money. It was great to get, but crazy. You know, now they pay you for your job. It’s not excessive. It’s a very different time and I think what’s happening, not so much in big fashion, but, if you want to make a living doing catalog , there is always someone coming up that is willing to do it for a little bit less, and that is what I think people are doing. I think it’s a hard time in this industry. I know it’s a hard time for people in the film business, I know that for a fact.

I never was in the union, but I know people in the union and they are losing their benefits because they can’t get jobs to work enough hours to keep them. It’s not a good time anywhere, but I just think there’s a million people that want to do hair and makeup, freelance, celebrity stuff. And again, I don’t mean this the wrong way at all, but I think a lot more need to pay their dues. Let’s put it this way: people who I idolized before I had any kind of a name were Oribe and Garren and Danilo, who are still very famous, and there is a reason for it. Because they all do quality work. They are famous, they make top money, but they don’t slack on anything. They are new and they’re inventive.

You see a lot of people who are new and come on and they latch on – that’s the wrong term – but who get attached to one celebrity, but it makes their career big. But it’s just one look. Do you know what I mean? And I don’t mean that mean spirited at all. I just appreciate someone who’s worked hard and can do more than one thing. Which all of those people I named have proven over and over and over again. And there are a lot of others. Chris McMillan I think is very talented. There is a different person for every job. Sally Herschberger is incredibly talented. Sally’s great at one thing, Chris is great at another, Oribe is great at another thing, you know what I mean? I don’t know, it’s a weird time in the business. I’m just happy to still be a part of it.

What has been your favorite look?

SC: I’ve had a few. My favorite thing right now is in my salon. It’s huge, it’s almost wall sized. It’ – is the story I did for Prestige, the Queen Mary story – the Asian girl with the big white wig I made. Kathy Young did the makeup, my friend Paris Libby, who is now living in Hong Kong and is one of the editors of Prestige, was “Ok, we’re going to put a ballcap on her, and you’re going to need you to make a wig. It was one of those things where I didn’t have time to think about it and I just did it and did it and went “Oh my God, did I do that?” (laughs). And it’s absolutely my favorite thing from the past few years. I love the Pat Field Destination campaign. Tthere are a million other things but, I love stupid little things. Like giving Mariah (Carey) pigtails for the Dream Lover video. It completely changed her look without changing it. I love all my stuff that has a retro feel to it, you know that looks done without being done. I’m not about a blowdry. Even if I’m on the beach. The stuff I did with Chante and Cindy is great, but that hair is work. My first and only Vogue cover was with Chante, with Stephanie Seymour. It was my first job with Chante, we shot for British Vogue and that will always be a huge huge, well, you know, I had no idea it was for a cover. My agency called and said “The Vogue’s out, go pick it up” and it was the cover. It’s one of those moments. So I have some favorites. But right now it’s the Chinese girl. And it’s kind of hysterical in Mississippi. People come in and they go (in a southern accent) “I don’t wanna look like that!” (peals of laughter) I love it.

Thanks so much Syd.

SC:Thanks so much, it was fun and say hi to Billy, well, I’ll see Billy before you will I’ll see him Sunday.

Syd returns back to Los Angeles this week for a shoot with German Vogue.

Directors Cut: Bonus questions answered

1. Billy is such an important person in your life. Have you ever been involved on a personal level?

a. No no no never have been, never will be. He is my best friend.

2. There are always tough customers, the types of jobs you mentioned requiring babysitting. What is the best way to handle this type of customer?

The way I handle it is:
i. Smile
ii. Do your job
iii. Get your check
iv. Don’t look back

3. You are placing an open call here for Los Angeles based assistants. An incredible opportunity. What are you looking for?

SC: I need to find new assistants based in LA. Anybody listening in based in LA? I have been away, or when I work with Pat, I often work by myself. My friend Johnny Stumps works with me all of the time, but he’s a hairdresser in his own right, not an assistant.

I’m looking for somebody who knows what hot rollers are. Somebody that knows how to do something besides blow dry and flatiron, and I’m not being nasty at all. I just feel like a lot of schools don’t teach the old school things you need to know. Like I said, I learned so much from all of those women that taught me when I was very young coming up. Like Jerry Hall, she made me set her hair wet, and had a portable dryer. It’s all of that old school stuff, like everything I learned in beauty school – pin curls and finger waves. It is all stuff I use everyday.

I always love to meet a kid who’s hungry. I love new talent and ideas, which is how I learn, and is also exciting for me. If you show me something new – hey. I love that. That’s one thing that has been good working in a salon for a change. I have some people around me where I go “Hey, I’ve never seen that before.” Because usually when you are on a set, it’s you. You don’t get to watch other people work. When I did Pat (Field) for fashion week, her show, I think I had 18 assistants and it was so much fun watching everyone work. That’s what I want. I just want somebody that’s hungry, that maybe I can learn from too.
