Dup alert: Luxio topcoat for CND Shellac Silver VIP status

A lot of moaning and groaning has been heard I over the Internet since CND announced (quietly) the discontinued products for 2014.  Among them, the very popular Silver VIP was give was given a lead to check out Akzentz Luxio’s Silver Effects. Looks pretty close to me:

The bonus about the microfine glitter in the topcoat is that you have at least one less step to complete. You can find multiple glitter and effects topcoats in Akzentz Luxio line. This is a pro only product.

CND – 2014 Discontinued Product

Read it and weep.

The list for CND discontinued products for 2014 has surfaced, and the whittling down of Shellac colors have begun.  The strangest choice?  Silver VIP, used almost daily by every tech I know, and loved by clients.  I can’t even wrap my head around how the chunky, multi-colored Zillionaire is a suitable replacement.

Moonlight & Roses and Iced Coral were both great for layering, but I’ve seen this color phased out in other lines and wonder if it is a situation with the materials needed for these types of colors.

Mother of Pearl gave a nice, small grade, multi color glitter effect.  You can find a dup in Glitter by Gel II.

Go out and grab your favorites before they are all gone.  You can see that many were phased out beginning last October, and have hit sold out status.Whatever you find at the distributor will be the dregs of the barrel.

What will you miss most?

CND for Michael van der Ham Spring/Summer 2014 Collection

London, UK (September 16, 2013)—Professional nail care company CND revealed four unique nail designs today at the Michael van der Ham Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Show at Hotel Café Royal in London. CND Co-founder Jan Arnold and an elite team of CND Nail Artists collaborated with the designer to create works of art that beautifully complemented the designs presented on the runway.

After a fulfilling artistic collaboration with van der Ham last season, CND was thrilled to join forces with the designer again for Spring/Summer 2014. “Michael’s couture fabrics and modern take on femininity are both classic and inventive – they inspire us to create true works of art,” said Jan Arnold. “His collection ties in beautifully with our Spring trend, ‘Open Road,’ which consists of time-worn pastels for the modern muse. This girl is free-spirited and spontaneous with an eclectic edge.”

CND’s partnership with Michael van der Ham this season produced four soft-focus nail looks inspired by a deeply romantic and impressionistic garden. “Hand-painted flowers in combinations of yellow and grey, teal and black, pink, grey and coral, and the deepest navy and purple provide a cacophony of color on a ‘casual’ shaped nail as easy to wear as your favorite ballet flat,” said CND Lead Education Ambassador Amanda Fontanarrosa. “Tonal, painterly, dreamy and whimsical, this nail style is perfectly imperfect and reflects beautifully the woman of Michael’s inspiration.”

Jan Arnold and CND have been pioneering nail artistry on the runway for 17 years, setting trends backstage at Fashion Week since 1996. They continue to define the trends in New York and around the world with highly artistic and intricate nail concepts developed in collaboration with innovative designers like van der Ham.

“It’s really exciting to work with CND because they have a true understanding of how to finish a look,” said Michael van der Ham. “They come with a great set of ideas and concepts to complement the clothes in the right way. The nails this season are beautifully hand-painted – like little works of art on the hands.”

CND Vinylux Weekly Nail Polish Swatches

Vinylux by CND, available to professionals, is the latest release in new, longer lasting nail polish

After discontinuing their Colours & Effects nail polish line, CND had to make a comeback with something special.  The new Vinylux line does this with highly pigmented color, longer lasting wear, and a faster drying top coat.

Thirty of the 62 colors also match the Shellac line, which will be a boon to resale for extended wear users.

The colors officially launch May 1st in the US, after having been released first in New Zealand and the UK.

I have a small sampling, but from the colors I saw (not all were in yet) the matches were pretty impressive. The one dud?  Tropix, which is much creamier and pinker than the Shellac version.  A pretty color, but not a match.

A mini intro kit of “Summer Brights” contains matches for the four newest releases for Shellac (Grape Gum, Water Park, Pink Bikini, Lobster Roll & Top Coat).

Suggested Use:

Vinylux is said to be the perfect product for the fashionista that needs to change out polish on a weekly basis.

  • NO base coat required = faster service
  • Self adhering formulation that continues to cure in the sun (natural UV lighting)
  • Top coat said to be specific to Vinylux cures in under 10 minutes

CND uses their polish line to create looks for designers at Fashion Week, so it’s imperative the colors dry quickly and look rich.  The polish is smooth, and seems to dry at the same speed as Colours & Effects.  I think this is fine, because any faster and you start getting into competition polishing 😉 and that isn’t a pace everyone can keep up with.

I’m currently having Vinylux testing out on some hands, and will get back with you on wear. I will also update with colors released.

Have you seen/tried the new weekly polish from CND?

Locket Love

Night Glimmer

Tropix

Rock Royalty

Dark Dahlia

Bicycle Yellow

Electric Orange

Gilded Pleasure

(Similar to Chanel Peridot or Orly duochrome)

Daring Escape

Purple Purple

Pink Bikini

Water Park

Lobster Roll

Grape Gum

Asphalt Color Swatch

A few of you are asking about Asphalt color swatch.  I don’t think my search is that defined on the site, but here is a sample. It looks the same in Shellac, which is the bottom photo (matte out). What are you planning on doing with your color?

CND updates from the World Summit: Shellac, Brisa Lite, new LED Lamp

It’s been a long near year in the waiting, but exciting product developments mentioned by CND at the EA event in april 2012 are coming to light during the CND World Summit.  An overview:

Shellac colors 2013

Not sure who swatched these but I think it was someone in the UK.  The colors always look better than the promos.

23 Shellac colors will be released in 2013 (some limited edition):

  • 5 for spring (see above photo)
  • 4 for summer
  • 6 for fall
  • 2 holiday duos (for a total of four)
  • 4 additional year end

New CND Brisa Lite

Two soakable gels are available now.  Unlike current market products such as Calgel, BioSculpture or ManiQ, Brisa Lite has an advanced adhesion and requires no buffing of the natural nail.

Brisa Lite Smoothing

Have clients that have problems with peeling?  Brisa Lite Smoothing will do the trick.  This thin, protective layer applies just like Shellac for added strength underneath your Shellac applications.  Soak off time is 15 minutes.

Brisa Lite Sculpting

Brisa Lite Sculpting adds strength and length.  This also requires no buffing of the natural nail and is an option for extensions for your e-file adverse clients.  Soak off time is 30 minutes.

Shellac can be worn over enhancements, and Brisa Lite is no exception.  New education will be incorporating how to properly apply Brisa Lite.

New LED lamp for Brisa/Brisa Lite/Shellac

This has been in the works for a while, and you may have seen some evolution with your Shellac.  The new lamp will cure all three products now, but is not scheduled to come out until summer 2013.  No pricing, photos or other details are available.

New tagline

A new tagline was also announced, which seemed oddly familiar?

New Lacquer Line

Colours & Effects was discontinued, and you’ve probably seen it on clearance.  A brand new line of polishes should be debuting.  Will update when information is released.

So are you excited about the new changes coming in the CND lineup?

Top 5 Nail finds for your Nailphile

When she talks double digits, she means five on the left hand, five on the right, and possibly an additional set at her feet. She couldn’t make gift giving any easier for you. Here are top five selections to keep her happy these holidays:

1. Tom Ford Nail Lacquers – 16 piece set $480
This Neiman Marcus exclusive will slay the fingertip fashionista. A beautiful range of colors from pale to pow (including my favorites, Indian Pink and violet Noir), there is just no nail set comparison. Utter opulence. This set might polish off what’s in your wallet, but you can opt instead for the equally sexy four piece ($120) or custom mix at $30 per individual bottle.

2. Julep Maven $20-$200+
A series of nail parlours in the pacific northwest, Julep has taken nail polish sampling to new level. Surprise with a premix set (shown in GEM), or purchase 3, 6, or 12 months of Maven boxes for a surprise every 30 days. A foot scrub, lippy, hand mask or some other surprise beauty item is always tucked in with the polish. I just completed a year of gratis Maven service with Julep and found the testing to find personal style fun, and eagerly looked forward to the unique black packages each month. Plus, I’m fantasizing the new copper color called Hilary in the Bombshell collection (my style) was named after me!

3. Zoya Dream Boxes $24
A staple at fashion week, Zoya churns out an enormously creative number of colors all year long. They’ve introduced Dream Boxes, a way you can select three of your favorite colors to create a custom box of colors. These black beauties are the same high quality, custom foam fit boxes Zoya houses their Fashion Week designer color collections. Another bonus? All Dream boxes ship free.

4. Essie + Bauble Bar $50
Pick a color, any color. It comes with a matching bracelet! Now pick another bracelet of your choice. And another. Now, put your polish and three bracelets into the tote Essie gives you. Voila – one classy Christmas. Sign up now and get an additional $10 off.

5. CND Shellac Gift Certificate $35-$60
Let’s get real – some woman have neither the time nor talent to polish their talons. Those ladies might be pining for the authentic two-week, no chip Shellac service that can only be found in salons. Hit up a nail technician and add a paraffin dip to the tab for an especially pampering service. Search CND.com for the salon nearest you.

Tutorial: Half Moon Manicure

My aunt first turned me on to the Half Moon manicure many, many years go.  She was a nail fanatic and wore them when they originally came into vogue.  There were three variations she told me about, and I still remember her giggle about how much fun they had with this look.  Until recent years, I had never seen anyone wear it.  Thrilled to see it return.  Of course, I have to add glitter to most everything, so here is a tutorial with bling.  This is with CND Shellac for  long lasting look, but you can do the same with regular lacquer.

The trick to getting this look right is paying attention to proper sticker placement and not polishing too crazily over the stickers so it’s neat when you remove it.

Oh, and my aunt? It’s crazy, but this is the only photo I have of her. And it’s actually a photo of a painting I have of her – she always seemed to look this glamorous.  She was my original nail guru, and I learned so much about nail care and became so excited by nails in large part because of her.  Even her brother had a thing for nice digits, and once cut a date short when he could no longer stomach his date’s unkempt nails.

She would love fall 2012, because red is coming back in full force, and she wore her signature red lips everyday, and had her nails done every week up to her death.  I miss her.

Was there a specific person in your life that turned you on to nails, inspired you to new trends?

Back in April/May we CND Education Ambassadors were sworn to secrecy of the colors mentioned above during our week long conference in Caralsbad, CA, but didn’t still have any visuals!  Even then, Midnight Swim sounded as fab as it appears here.  What do you think of the new Shellac colors?  Expect them to launch around September in line with Fashion Week as usual.

Ruffian – MAC Cosmetics launch fashion week inspired press-on nails

Anyone that follows this site knows that the simple but exquisite Ruffian nail from Fashion Week 2010 is my favorite nail of all time. Created by CND, it’s a foil moon at the base of the nail, with either black or blue matte. Genius.

Indeed, Ruffian is a line CND has created some of the most arresting looks for on the catwalk, including this monogrammed moon manicure from Fashion Week also during 2010 (s/s 2011)

That’s why I’m both excited and perplexed that Ruffian has released a limited edition collection of these exact nail looks…via MAC?

Demilune

Spectator

Demoiselle

These limited edition nails run $25 a set of 24 and are available only at MAC online or in a MAC store.

I love seeing runway looks jump to real life (another was earlier in the year when Zooey Deschanel attempted the CND Ruffian tuxedo look).

What do you think about this press-on effort?  Will you be getting a set of the nails? If so, which one/s?

CND Additives: Examples on Shellac AND correction

If you’ve been following me on Facebook here or here, you’ve probably seen these photos lately.  I thought I’d share a few more examples of what you can do with CND Shellac and the new pigment Additives:

Pigments can enhance a design (before encapsulating with topcoat)

After top coating ring finger (this pretty combo of Purple Purple, Violet Pearl and Titanium Pearl courtesy Kimberly Jones)

This is a simple, irregular band that looks a bit like radio frequency (voilet over Black Pool)

My client was going to Africa and this seemed appropriate!

A little yellow over matte Asphalt with a raindrop effect = Slippery When Wet

The yellow can be achieved with lacquer for a temporary effect, or use CND Additives to be all the (road) rage!

Have you pre-ordered your CND Additives yet? CND Additives are pre-selling now for professionals at distributors in a beautiful silver 6 pack, with an additional 6 colors available.  Take note if you’ve seen these gorgeous ads – there is a small typo about using them with Shellac. Cure your color and apply the Additives over the top of the cured shellac. Then topcoat. Voila!

Working with Pigments: CND’s new Additives and Shellac

A little while ago I mentioned CND Additives – a range of high grade pigments that will rock your nail world by allowing you to mix, blend, cover and just all out create with color. The distribution date is still a ways off (target: July), but I’ve been getting so many questions on how to use them I thought I’d start posting suggestions.  CND Additives are perfect for Shellac, Brisa Gel and Liquid & Powders, so I’ll do a different post for each product type to get your minds working on  to incorporate the product to your line using Shellac.  Today’s post is covering one of the easiest ways to use these pigments, and that is as a layer:

1. Create new colors through layering

Easily increase your color line with a simple wash of pigments.  Longing for summer pastels?  You can have them with Shellac and Additives.

How to create Lavender/Lilac nails

  • Create a base color using one coat of Purple Purple (cure) and one coat of Moonlight & Roses (cure).
  • Brush a thin, even coat of CND Additives Violet Pearl Pigment
  • For a lavender look, one coat is fine.  You can see in the photo below how just one layer drastically changes the base color.

For a lilac look, use two or more coats.  The more coats, the lighter your look will get.

Float your topcoat over and cure for the finish.

You like?

This is the first in a series. Check back for more ways on how to use the new CND Additives.

Good Houskeeping’s erroneous article on UV manicures

Important Facts about CND Shellac: A Good Housekeeing article contained misleading information about the Shellac system and gel polishes in general. It is important to clear up this information. Please see CND’s reply to this article:

“Safety is CND’s top priority and we take tremendous concern with the article in the March issue of Good Housekeeping. It is very misleading. We took immediate steps to clarify the facts with the Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI). We met with the head of the institute, two chemists and two research directors to present accurate information and independent study results. GHI listened, is currently evaluating the information and conducting additional research. The staff of our lab is at GHI’s disposal. We are also collaborating with the Nail Manufacturers’ Safety Council to ensure that correct and accurate information is available. What is most important to know is that UV manicures are not dangerous. CND Shellac products have been thoroughly researched and tested. The only risk of possible nail damage would be from improper application or removal by an untrained nail professional or woman at home

CND ShellacTM – Safety

Question: Is the CND UV Lamp safe to use?

Answer: The UV light present in the CND UV Lamp has been proven safe to use. Various studies, including one done by Rapid Precision Testing Laboratories, have compared the lamp to natural sunlight and various indoor tanning lamps on the market. The tests have confirmed that the bulbs used in CND’s UV Nail Lamp are among the safest in use today. Getting regular UV manicures is equivalent to spending an extra 1-2 minutes in daylight.

Question: Are Methacrylates dangerous?

Answer: Methacrylates have been safely used in nail products for decades. The Cosmetics Ingredient Review has determined Methacrylates safe as used.

Question: Does CND Shellac contain Methyl Pyrrolidone?

Answer: CND Shellac does not contain the chemical Methyl Pyrrolidone (n-MP). Prior to August 2011, several original CND Shellac color formulations used a – raw material – that contained trace amounts of n-MP in the solvent. The amount of n-MP in the final formula was below 0.1%, well within safe harbor limits of California’s Prop 65.

Question: What are the negative effects of using acetone to remove CND Shellac?

Answer: Acetone, which is used to remove CND Shellac, is used in almost all polish removers. Acetone can cause temporary dryness; however, acetone substitutes are less effective and equally as drying. Lightweight oils can be used to offset the temporary dryness.

Question: Can I use CND Shellac at home?

Answer: CND Shellac is a professional product and should only be used by licensed, trained nail professionals. ”

As I ‘ve even mentioned many times in the past, gel manicures in general have been around for 30 years. CND’s new technology is much more gentle, and lamp is regulated and tested safe. You can feel confident when you are getting an authentic CND application.

CND Shellac – spring 2012 color swatches

These Six new CND Shellac colors to hit shelves March 2012

Behold, the 6 new colors from CND Shellac: Dark Lava, Rubble, Cityscape, Silver Chrome, Silver VIP Status, Gold VIP Status These are all indoor swatches I took just to get you the scoop.  I’ll be getting outdoor shots too.  What do you think of them?  The colors are going on sale in March so get your PRE-ORDERS to your distributors now!

Dark Lava

Gorgeous, jewel-toned black wine

Rubble

Cityscape

Dove Gray

Silver Chrome

The Effects – Silver VIP Status & Gold VIP Status

Ok, so it technically isn’t an Effect (that’s reserved for the lacquer line) but it serves in the same vein.  These lovelies give a wash of glimmer over color.

Silver VIP Status

Silver VIP Status over Cityscape

I NEED to get a better photo of this one.  When we were asked for fantasy Shellac colors, one of mine was the spectacular gray called Miss Wu from the Jason Wu collection done with CND.  It’s this cool and dreamy gray with a chic pearlization to it.  By applying Silver VIP Status over Cityscape, you can achieve a very similar look.  Without, you get a great cream.  It’s fabulous to have options.

Gold VIP Status over Rubble

Again, a sleek wash that just give a perk to the color.  Can be used all over or in art.  Try it in art!

That’s it for now.  I’ll be getting more photos together for you. Any other questions or requests on the product ask away.

Fashion Week is coming up and I’ll be detailing looks for you.  For on-the-go reporting I’d love if you would “Like” my Solessence Facebook page to keep up while I’m away!  Detailed how-tos will be posted to the blog after my return (and also closer to actual season as is my norm).

Rihanna in CND Shellac – over enhancements!

Rihanna in US Magazine, pictured with CND VIP manicurist Flavia Pitton

While she’s been a fan of CND Shellac from the get go, US Magazine recently featured Rihanna in Milan getting a Shellac Black Pool manicure on top of CND Retention+ liquid and powder set.

Yes, Shellac is for natural nails. But it is also for use over CND enhancements!  How many of you are doing this double duty mani?  I have a few gels that I Shellac over.  No tip wear is a big benefit, along with the standard long lasting, high shine and no-dry time we’ve all come to know and love!

She’s Got the Look: Zooey Deschanel, Golden Globes and that CND Tuxedo Manicure

Zooey Deschanel’s excitement over her adorable tuxedo nails has spilled all over the internet.

Where did the design come from?  CND’s Ruffian fall 2011 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, New York.

And this is why runway is done!

Ruffian’s collection, called “Tuxedo Park” was matched perfectly with CND’s version of a feminine tuxedo manicure.

Experiment with your own colors or get this runway look at home:

CND Colours & Effects

Use the following combination to achieve the blue/lavender base:

  • (1) coat Ice Blue Shimmer
  • (2) coats Lavender Pearl
  • (1) coat Air Dry Top Coat

For ArtWork

BlackJack

  • Hand paint black bow tie at tip
  • Hand paint black moon base at base
  • Handpaint 3 buttons down the vertical center of the nail

In total, the CND team polished 6080 layers, 760 moons and bow ties and 2280 buttons for the Ruffian show.  It was well worth it to see it again!

Congrats to the CND team that put it all together:

Sneak Peek: Six New Spring 2012 CND Shellac Colors & Salon Certification Program

2/2/12: The actual swatches are now up here: http://www.solessence.com/2012/02/03/cnd-shellac-spring-2012-color-swatches/

The six new colors for spring will be: Silver VIP Status (shimmer overlay), Gold VIP Status (shimmer overlay), Cityscape (creamy dove gray), Rubble (mushroom taupe), Dark Lava (stormy raisin), Silver Chrome (iron metallic)

CND‘s celebrated beauty innovation, CND Shellac Power Polish, is a lifesaver for modern women, thanks to its two-week flawless wear, zero-dry time and mirror shine. Now, CND is adding six gorgeous new shades to the line-up in March 2012. Whether you’re a classic taupe addict or a metallic iron maiden, with 36 shades there is a sophisticated look to suit all digit desires.

This summer, CND kicked off an intensive CND Shellac Salon Certification Program in the USA to ensure that women seeking a CND Shellac manicure service are getting what they ask for by a properly trained Nail Professional. To find a CND Shellac certified salon, visit CND’s Salon Locator at cnd.com. Look for CND Shellac Certified Salon signage and branding in order to find the “REAL” CND Shellac.

Say HELLO to the new colors:

CND Shellac - 6 shades, March 2012

CND Shellac comes off gently in ten minutes with convenient, hygienic CND Shellac Remover Wraps that limit skin exposure to acetone by keeping it pinpointed on the nail. CND Shellac color comes off from the inside out. The high-tech ‘quick release’ base coat causes it to flake into small pieces that gently slide off the nail without filing off the surface of the nail – unlike gels that require at least a half hour of soaking to remove.

It’s a Wrap: CND vs Hands Down

I’ve had a lot of questions about how the Hands Down Wraps compare to the CND wraps so I decided to put it to the test over a two day period and got some pretty consistent results.  Here’s a photo rundown of a set:

The nails

This CND Shellac set contained some custom glitter.

CND Shellac Wraps

  • Plastic backed, absorbent pad concentrates acetone on polish while minimizing contact on skin.
  • Traps heat to accelerate penetration, quickening removal time

After 10 minutes, the Shellac wraps were removed. Photo below shows how acetone penetrated the full nail of Shellac, making it gelatinous. It peeled/lifted as soon as the wrap was removed. Removal was clean, even for glitter.

Hands Down

  • Hands Down wraps focus on non-slip, band-aid like material for secure adhesion to finger.
  • Concentrates acetone to nail
  • The design is open ended, but I also wrapped to cover a tip

Next, the Hands Down wraps were removed.  You can see from the photo that the tips were not saturated – the polish is different in color.

I was unable to flake the product, so it went back under.

One comment everyone made was that they were very uncomfortable pretty quickly.  I thought maybe I’d wrapped them too tightly but finally pinned down that their fingers were cold. Ice cold.  The layer of insulation on the plastic backed CND version did alot to keep fingers comfortable, along with accelerating the removal.

So a plastic bag was placed over one finger to see if that would help.

It made a difference, but in the end the tips were still quite troublesome.

The difference between the CND photo and the Hands Down photo is that the CND nail has flaked off without any removal effort on my part.  The Hands Down nail required effort.  This was the result I had with all of the Hands Down removals, with or without glitter.

Recap:

Hands Down

Pros

  • Bandage like material secured quickly to finger no matter how much acetone was used
    • Cons – clients commented they felt like they were in emergency room instead of salon
    • Cons – Lack of plastic backing made fingers very cold as acetone evaporated
    • Cons – Lack of plastic took longer to penetrate tips of nails

CND

Pros

  • Aesthetically pleasing, heat trapping, effective removal
    • Cons – Absorbent pads easy to over-saturate, which may cause difficulty in securing

Price points are the same for the products.  With a better client (and manicurist) experience, the winner this round is CND.

Amazing French Manicure – CND Shellac

This client came in to re-Shellac, and even I couldn’t believe the results.  It had been four and a half (4.5!) weeks since I had given her a French manicure using Soft White and Negligee. She came in with one broken nail on her right index but that grew out beautifully.

I see this all of the time with color applications, but I don’t get many requests for French manicures, so it was a pleasant surprise.

How is this long wear possible? Look at the shine still on it!

Shellac is a patent-pending product combining nail polish, gel, and a new technology created by CND that blends the benefits of both to give a thin application similar to nail polish with the long lasting, high shine benefits of gel.

This formula is the only formula on the market that doesn’t require:

  • Filing of the natural nail for adhesion – CND Shellac is formulated to adhere to natural nail beds.
    • The filing required for gel nails is often overdone, resulting in nail damage.  This eliminates any potential issues from a heavy-handed tech.
  • Filing of the topcoat for removal
    • CND Shellac has tunnels that run from the top coat of the product to the base coat, allowing for an amazing 10 minute removal!
  • Taking a “break”- done correctly, application and removal does not create nail damage.
    • The above mentioned tunnels also allow for cuticle oil to penetrate all the way down to the nail bed, nourishing the entire nail and not just cuticles

If you can’t imagine life with an extended wear manicure, you have never tried CND Shellac.  Treat yourself or give this power polish treatment as the perfect stocking stuffer.  It is the most amazing nail product to come out in ages.  But you don’t have to take my word for it.  Advertising Age recently wrote up on the product as one of America’s Hottest Brands.

Video for Nails Magazine: Cosmic Showers Nail

Recently you asked how I created the Cosmic Showers nail.  Adding different sizes of glitter and pigments moves your art from flat to fabulous – fast!  It’s also quick and easy in the salon.  Since Nails Magazine had contacted me around the same time and asked if I’d be interested in creating a nail tutorial for them, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to share.  Sorry for keeping mum until now.   This is my first video for Nails Magazine and the step-by-step nail tips will appear in the January 2012 issue.  Thanks, Nails!

She’s Got the Look: Jin Soon for Sally Hansen at Prabal Gurung – MBFW ss 2012

No detail was left out to ensure Prabal Gurung’s showing was a cohesive collection.  Beautiful purples dominated from clothes to lips to nails.

Did you know Prabal Gurung collabs with Sally Hansen each season on a new color specific to his collection?  For ss 2012, he created a dark, nearly black yet glowing purple called “Loves-Me-Not” in the Complete Salon Manicure formula that is a stunner.  Celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi took it one step further and layered the dark over Sally Hansen’s Lacey Lilac Xtreme Wear base. You can see better detail on the sample nails in the photo below:

“Loves-Me-Not” becomes available on counters everywhere Sally Hansen is sold around April 2012.

For the runway, the manicures were applied on the spot.  Jin Soon shared with me how to get this look, and you can do it at home or salon as well.  It is similar to the CND Moon nail that was my favorite of all time so you know I am all over this look. Watch the video and see why Jin says the Sally Hansen brush is made for this type of art:

Like it?  Will you try it?

A look at Gurung’s collection gives you an idea of how perfectly this nail completed the look.

CND Pretty Poison nails at Jen Kao: MBFW

CND created some crazy beautiful nails at Jen Kao this, their 15th year at Fashion Week New York

Leah models the complete look – it was her birthday

The premise was partially based on a “bad girl” so the base was spray-painted black with strong colors faded to the tips.  While models wore one color, CND’s Jan Arnold donned different colored tips for a poisonous frog look.  I actually saw a poisonous frog exhibit earlier this year at MPM and the nails took me right back.  I’ve been obsessing.

You don’t need a spray paint machine to get this look at home or salon. Check out the gorgeous Wanda Ruiz as she shares for ways you can achieve this dramatic look. Here’s to another fabulous 15 years CND!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Begins s/s 2012 Coverage 9/8/2011

Lincoln Center gets a facelift with a sexy new facade

It’s that time again!  This year marks the one year anniversary that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week moved from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, as well as the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.  Many changes are underfoot as IMG continues to shape and mold the new space, the latest being a brilliant new face that will add a little pizazz to the more formal architecture of the existing structure, as well as allow for “flexibility…over the next couple of seasons to explore digital integration and other technology driven enhancements,” said Peter Levy, SVP Managing Director, IMG Fashion Worldwide.

There is a huge digital board inside that projects previous runways throughout the week and it is a bit of a thrill to relive a show, or catch a glimpse of one you weren’t privy to be in attendance.  I’m getting chills thinking of that happening in some form outside for the world to see.

Aside from a gratefully long list of shows to cover, both front and backstage, this season I’m also going to be working an event with CND (more on that later, but it does involve Shellac). Don’t forget to get your free mani’s on Fashion’s Night Out! (no, that isn’t it either)

Adele goes Nude for VMA

Adele chose a look very similar to Shellac Cocoa in the hottest shape right now. Stunning.

I did a similar look a few months back for the Royal Wedding and it is one of my absolute favorite to wear. This was the second version I brought down to almonds (shorter versions). Simple, elegant, classic.

CND Shellac Polish – Fall 2011 Swatches & Packaging Info

Hi Everyone, I know you’ve been patiently waiting for Shellac swatches and I want to say Thank You.  I have been swamped at work but started them thanks to a little help from friends (Hi Ingrid!).  Look for back on this post in the next few days.  In the meantime, here is a bit of a teaser:

Studio White: This soft white makes for the most natural French ever!  It is also very easy to work with compared to Cream Puff.  I just got it in and have done 5 french so far.  Very pretty.

Zillionaire (over pinky nail): glitter with red, blue and gold flecks.

Asphalt: Just like the CND Asphalt polish.  I recommend stocking up on retail if you are a nail tech, because your clients can buy a bottle for toes or for extending wear.  This is a hothothot color for fall/winter!

Hotski to Tschoske*: Oy, I think I spelled that wrong.  But it is a very bright teal. *hotski to tchotchke

Moonlight & Roses: This is like Beau on steroids.  Same white frost bits but with red/pink sheen.  It really makes a glow to the nails and looks fab with studio white (see above too).

Purple Purple: Photographed blue here, but a gorgeous dark purple.  I liked it much more than I thought I would.

Check back for swatches.

First Asphalt! 8/24

There are changes to the packaging front & one side this fall 2011.
FRONT CND SHELLAC
I always tell my clients that the term Shellac is now used for a 2 week manicure in the way Kleenex is to tissues or Xerox is to copying. It’s treated as a catchall! If it isn’t CND, it isn’t the patent pending Shellac. Looky what’s on the cover of the boxes now!

The miniscule color identifier is on the bottom of the front. The sales clerk and I didn’t realize it was there.

SIDE CND SHELLAC
The other change is to the side of the box. They’ve removed the fantastic large print stating the color. It was so easy to confirm you had picked up the right color, and it was probably easier to stock. Life goes on.

Flashback: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Jason Wu

Jason Wu’s show was such an interesting number.  The classic clothing with a bit of a Black Swan theme going had gilded hair, lids, heels and nails.  And although this was for fall, the gorgeous black on white numbers have been appearing on starlets like Reese Witherspoon all summer. Behold:

One of my favorite details of this show was the bleaching station. Here, models had their eyebrows bleached as if they were shaved off. After the show, they had to return to have them colored back on. What is done in the name of beauty!

The fabrics carried the metallic theme forward:

Find out how to get the CND gilded nail here:

For hair, gold was painted onto the hair in a leaf shape:

Flashback – NYFW fall 2011: Carolina Herrera

Can’t remember what the designers wanted you to wear for this fall? I know, February was another lifetime ago. Never fear, here’s the recap:

Carolina Herrera was completely lush and elegant. Velvets, jewel tones, thin belts, gloves, unique treatment/seams – damn it was pretty. And those shoes, I want those shoes. Herrera proved you could take a break from edgy and just be beautiful. The orange/copper/teal combo was absolutely striking. Top notch models like Chanel Iman, MAC makeup artists and CND nails polished Dark Ruby rounded out this lovely collection.

Cheap Thrills with Cellophane Accents for CND Shellac Nail Art

Ooooh, so I’m working on August nails (green for peridot, Leos!) and I decided to stop and share this cost-saving art trick with you. It involves lots and lots of cellophane – after Christmas sales you know. Use as shown or with a puncher to create shapes. Try to keep edges smooth though, or they are hard to lay right. I’ve got these inserted into CND Shellac.

Sheer Nail Options with CND Shellac

This is partially in response to Pearl’s questions from this post on Romantique Shellac
The sheer nail option video is finally up. I get a lot of questions about sheer/semi-sheer nail color and this video shows you the difference between top sheers. It is also to display the white nail pencil I’ve been using the last year for sheer nail users. Developed in the 20’s/30’s, this pencil goes in and out of fashion over the years but always manages to resurface. I started using this as child because my aunt introduced me to this tool at a very young age. I mean young.

What I love about this pencil is that someone can get sheer Shellac and use this to get a very natural looking, temporary french for special occasion or when they want to switch things up. If you’ve tried this in the past and found it didn’t work for you, watch the video and see if you had it done right. It’s easy once you get the hang of it.

PS You might not believe your eyes. I actually have my nails done in the last segment.  Beau with custom blue/silver/holo glitter mix on almonds.  And yep, that other frame I was experimenting with crackle.

CND: Shellac Layering: Hot Chilis

NEW! The header tab at top of the page contains swatches

Not sure if a combo is a do or do not? I’ve layered and swatched all 24 colors of Shellac to make visualization a breeze.

Looking for options? CND’s Shellac can be layered to create a near infinite number of color combinations, just like the Colours & Effects line. Keep checking back for updates. It’s taking a while to sort and crop but I hope you’ll find it worth the wait.

Hot Chilis over the darker colors create beautiful eggplant.  Today was actually too bright for the best photography, but you can see the range Hot Chilis adds when layering.

Hot Chilis over Fedora

Hot Chilis over Black Pool

Hot Chilis over Masquerade

Hot Chilis over Tutti Fruitti

Hot Chilis over Tropix

Hot Chilis over Strawberry Smoothie

Hot Chilis over Rose Bud

Hot Chilis over rock Royalty

Hot Chilis over Red Baroness

Hot Chilis over Hot Pop Pink

I’ve Moved! New Location for Nails, New CND certification

Hello everyone – it’s been a crazy last couple of weeks but I’m excited to finally be able to announce a new location. I’ve moved just streets over from Whitefish Bay to Shorewood Wisconsin and am now doing Shellac, Minx and everything else for the Milwaukee area at 2317 E Capitol Drive (inside Scenario Hair Design). We’re just steps from City Market, Atwater Park and that fabulous Lake!

Non-metered parking is available, and I have a wonderful room for all of your semi-private manicure/pedicure services. You can even make your appointments 24/7 now by  booking online here .

In other news, last Monday I attended the first in a three part series for Master certification with CND.  I’m happy to announce I now have my Master Painter Certificate for Shellac and the Colours & Effects lacquer line.

The ride started out beautiful, even though severe storms were forecasted.  The instant we parked, I kid you not, the skies opened up.  We had arrived very early to make sure we’d be on time and as we sat in the hotel cafe, tables and chairs outdoors were blown over, branches came down and we had a few brownouts.  Over 80K people were without power.  Luckily we didn’t have that problem.

My boot camp mentor Angi Wingle was training,  and people came from all over the US to attend.  We were sat randomly as we came in.  I got a very pleasant surprise when someone at my table said she followed on Facebook and my blog.  Hello to Jessica from Indiana if you are reading this right now!  Angi was actually in need of a model and Jessica drove the 4 hours up herself.  She has gorgeous nails, she was a perfect candidate.

Angi & Jessica

Oh my, I was so tired I hit publish last night instead of draft! I wanted to add that if you are thinking about CND training I will be adding information to the site calendar here, and you should also call CND or go to their website at cnd.com

Aside from techniques and knowledge, the goodies alone were shocking!  For this Master Painter were were supplied with a CND Shellac lamp, curette, productproductproduct, C&E lacquers and a very cool purse style bag.  Each Master certification level has a different bag to reflect the style of training.  I’d also received the faux patent leather from boot camp that is given for the L&P class and I have to say, these bags are surprisingly well made.  They are durable, very attractive and fit everything without being bulky.

If you don’t feel ready for Master level, there are many other courses for introduction or Skill Building.  It’s such a great way to meet new people in your industry while improving your craft.

I’ll update later today to show you the Mood Ring nail we learned for Boot Camp, created by CND EA Candice Manacchio.  It is a gorgeous 5 color layer nail and was also shared during the Master class.  Enjoy your Saturday!

CND Shellac Layering: Iced Coral

NEW! The header tab at top of the page contains swatches

Sorry for inundating with swatches. I’d normally spread things out but I’m trying to take advantage of the holiday/down time to catch up on all of the editing.

Iced Coral is one of the prettiest Shellac colors for spring/summer and a great layering shade. It gives a bit of a peachy frost with a tinge of green. It usually softens and lightens any color you put it over, and smooths out the appearance (for example, over Iced Cappuccino). Over the different pinks and reds you get what I call sunshiney shades, and a good mix of peaches.

Iced Coral over Tropix

Iced Coral over Tutti Frutti

Iced Coral over Hot Pop Pink

Iced Coral over Gotcha

Iced Coral over Rose Bud

Iced Coral over Cappuccino

Iced Coral over Cocoa

Iced Coral over Romantique

Iced Coral over Strawberry Smoothie

Iced Coral over Black Pool
Putting Iced Coral over Rock Royalty or Fedora will have similar results. There is a slight color difference, but almost negligible.

CND Shellac Layering: Negligee

NEW! The header tab at top of the page contains swatches

Negligee over any Shellac color is an easy way to add a bit of dimension, smooth out imperfections and create a bit of opalescense. It doesn’t fully come through in the photos, but in many of the colors, especially pink reds, they look a bit like Jolly Ranchers. Very pretty and summery.  If you are looking for a deep Shellac Blue, the Negligee over Black Pool will give you that color.

Negligee over Black Pool

Negligee over RoseBud

Negligee over Hot Pop Pink

Negligee over Gotcha

Negligee over Decadence

Negligee over Wildfire

Negligee over Masquerade

Negligee over Rock Royalty

Negligee over Cocoa

Negligee over Hollywood
Hollywood is essentially Wildfire with beautiful silver microflakes. Negligee over either looks the same.

Nail Swatches Category in Header bar

Swatches are grouped up on the header bar (scan the top if you haven’t spotted it yet) for quick reference.  Uploading continues at a slower pace than I’d like, but at least it appears to be working now.  I had it broken down by company, collection and color but it wouldn’t load correctly.  I’m hoping this will help streamline the searching for all of the swatches through multiple posts!

I Minx’d a Boy (and I Liked It) – IBS Las Vegas

My partner in Advanced Level 1 Certification at IBS Las Vegas

I had a chance to cover the International Beauty Show Las Vegas (IBS) last weekend and had a blast! Along with the many exhibitors, IBS also hosted the Nail Pro Competition, ran alongside the Esthetician tradeshow and hosted a ton of workshops on hair, nail, beauty, business.  Most were offered at no additional charge with price of admission, but a few also extended out to more-indepth training.

One class I couldn’t pass up was a Minx Nails workshop with Naja. She was the first manicurist to apply the patterned, full nail covering called Minx that offers the only true metallic for nails. Naja now does Minx for Fergie, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, the list goes on. She knows her stuff.

She also released her own line of Minx at the show – behold the board that was pretty much sold out by the time I came back.

She gave a great talk on a mix of the business, then application side of Minx and mentioned she was giving a certification class that evening.  A chance to get hands-on training with The Naja?  I did not plan for this at all, but I just had to attend.  Had to attend. Especially since the new lace styles and more are ideal for layering over Shellac. It’s a complimentary match made in heaven.
The training room was decked out. I was so sad my pinkie was not already done so I could flash it when eating my cucumber sandwich.

Hey everyone – it’s Lucien from @MinxNailsDotCom

Although I’d had a lot of foreplay with Minx (I’ve even got a little hoarder stash of patterns I’ve purchased in the past), this was the first time I’d gone all the way. I was totally hooked.

Not only was Naja there, but Lisa Logan (Beyonce’s Minxacurist) also co-trained. Check out her line of Minx patterns and see Bey on the cover of W this month with a fab set.
Naja, Lisa – in fact it seemed like the entire crew was there, including founders.

It was 3 good hours and I am really glad I did it. I was right back to work the next day and two clients BEGGED for what they saw on my hand. I caved on the second and gave her a Minx pedicure. She’s wearing it with a gold and silver dress for Saturday. I have to say it looked pretty amaze.

Minx is available in around 240 patterns, and I’ve been Minxing away. Education is crucial for any product, and you can’t go wrong taking a session or two with Minx.  Check out the site and have fun.

Thanks to Nokia & Elle (style correspondent event), I was able to capture many of the conference photos on the gorgeous new Nokia N8 in this spectacular pink. Much love to Southwest Airlines & Journal-Sentinel for getting me there and back.

Shellac Layering: Mother of Pearl

I’ll be posting them in color order, starting with the glitter mix, Mother of Pearl.  Notice that this bottle contains much more glitter than the original swatch I did on first release.  Although I often custom mix, I really like this concentrated glitter effect.

Keep checking back for updates. It’s taking a while to sort and crop but I hope you’ll find it worth the wait 🙂

Swatches: CND Colours & Effects – Primaries, Secondaries, Chromes

CND has a pretty fabulous line of lacquers called Colours & Effects.  Quick to dry (these are the same nail polishes used at Fashion Week) the colors are strong.  The best part about this system is the ease it gives the nail artist.

PRIMARIES

Bicycle Yellow

Relay Red

Anchor Blue

Did you know that color is proprietary?  When mixing paints or polishes, companies have their Pantone combinations registered.  Now, take that same combo and move it a digit or two.  Voila!  Legally, you have a new color. This is why there are so many near dupes/repeats on the market.

SECONDARIES

Electric Orange

Green Scene

Eclectic Purple

CND’s Colours & Effects creates a new game by providing 50 creme shades (Colours) and 15 accents (Effects) of shimmer, pearl and sparkle that can be paired to create nearly 900 colors. The only extra sets to come out are special partnerships, like the Jason Wu collection, or one hot trend per season. The Limited Editions are made as must-haves.

CHROMES

Gold Chrome

Copper Chrome

Silver Chrome

I’ve swatched the first main categories of Primaries, Secondaries and Chromes. If you haven’t tried this brand out you don’t know what you are missing! Check back for the complete swatch set of 50 cremes and 15 effects.

CND Shellac – Romantique Swatches

NEW! The header tab at top of the page contains swatches

Pearl recently asked a few questions in a CND Swatches post about the color Romantique. I thought I’d go ahead and post additional swatches here because it might be helpful to others.

Note: I’ve enhanced the French tip on the ring finger to further demonstrate coverage

Q: How many coats of Shellac have you applied for the swatches ? The salon I go to applies 2 coats and I dont get the same shade for Romantique or Negligee. Yours looks exact like the bottle color !
A: My swatches are two coats of color. It is possible they are not getting the pigment mixed enough. I would suggest they shake the bottle very well to ensure uniform color. Also, Romantique does take a bit of skill to get fluid. If the tech is having trouble, it’s better to do three thin coats to get it even.

Q: Does Romantique look similar to OPI Bubble Bath ?
A: OPI’s formulas have been undergoing a lot of changes since the Coty buyout, and the new Bubble Bath is a different shade, horribly streaky and takes multiple coats. In that regard, I would say no. CND Shellac Romantique is a beautiful milky pink. With one layer it can provide a nice base for a French. With two layers it is an opaque finish.

Romantique – one layer (no topcoat)
Provides a masking layer for French. More opaque than the pink Negligee and gives a pink-white cast.

Romantique – two coats (no topcoat)
Opaque coverage. If having trouble achieving this look, opt for three thin coats. Or, you can opt for three layers to give complete, zero sheer coverage.

Romantique

Romantique is the option for someone wanting a creme based color where the nail won’t be seen. It is very feminine with a bit of bold, and one of the most popular Shellac colors in my salon. It’s no stranger to celebs either – Katy Perry is also a big fan of this color and has been Shellac’d multiple times.

I’ll find a set of fingers to update with a BB comparison.

Sneak Peak: Minx Naja Rickett line to debut at IBS Las Vegas

Minx mistress Naja Rickett of Nail Talk Radio (she got Minx on Lady Gaga for several occassions) is coming out with her own designer line of Minx!  This follows the heels of Lisa Logan’s geometric launch, and is one of four nail artists Minx is featuring.  Rickett’s line is to debut at IBS Las Vegas , and she’s got some exciting layering options specifically for CND Shellac to go with the new looks.  Check back here for the rest of the previews closer to showtime, but for now I just have to say I LOVE this art deco look on Ke$ha:

NOTD: Bling Finger

This look is a play on words, just like it sounds.  Bling Finger = Ring Finger.  I first did this for the week of the Royal Wedding, but loved it so much I did it again:

My first set was very long stilettos, but these almonds are much more manageable.  I used CND Shellac in Cocoa, then applied crystals just to the back moon area.  Simple, elegant, eye catching.

Hot trend: CND Sunshine at Your Fingertips

Looking for a little sunshine?  Oranges are one of the hottest colors of the season!  Even if we don’t have a lot of warmth in the skies just yet, you can get little rays of lights on your nails.  Try this gorgeous combination in CND’s color range with the layering technique:

  • Prep nail, use basecoat (I love CND Stickey)
  • Add two layers of CND Colours & Effects in Electric Orange
  • Add thin, even layer of CND Colours & Effects in Gold Pearl
  • Finish with Top Coat

The result is a soft, shimmery, tangerine-ish glow that is complimentary and a wide range of skin tones.  It makes you look tan, it looks radiant and rich, and it tones down a full-blown orange for those a little too timid to make a full step into the trend.

You can also recreate this in CND Shellac using two coats of Tropix and one thin coat of Iced Coral for a look that will last at least two weeks.  Enjoy!

Don’t Sweat the Technique: Glitter Nails using Shellac

Note: This post was written for publication 3/29 but then I got too busy preparing to leave town. A couple of days ago, a photo of a glitter toe I posted on Facebook 4/20/2010 – one year ago – suddenly got attention and I was asked how it was done. I had previously entertained doing a toe video but you should get the idea with the video I made for this post. If you don’t, let me know. And to go back to my intro on toes with glitter, it is here

Ah, glitter. Yesterday we looked at a beautiful layered design on Kimberley using Shellac.  As a stylist and image consultant, she pretty much has free reign to go bold.  What happens when you need a little discretion? Is it a life of nudes for you?

Not necessarily.  Depending on your profession, you may need to resort to closing your office doors and kicking off your heels to get feel a little freedom with toes that glitter.  Or, maybe you can push the border with a little fingernail bling.  You don’t need much to add a bit of excitement to your nail regimen – let me show you:

How to Glitter with Discretion

I had a chance to show off my glitter nails and technique during NY fashion week this year.  Glitter doesn’t have to be all about really loud nails – sometimes it’s just enough to switch things up a bit to keep from getting bored.  Enjoy the trend using Shellac, which doesn’t require an e-file to apply or remove. It’s fun to glitter with discretion.  The most mild form of this is using CND Shellac Strawberry Smoothie (as shown in the video) or Negligee.  I use just a bit of glitter at the tip and drag down only slightly.  Do not encapsulate the entire nail.  The choosen glitter must be fine and highly compliment.  Think monochromatic shades or with lights, keep translucent:

As you can see, this works from pale to hot pinks, taupes to bold Rock Royalty.  The key is in a small amount of glitter and making a right match with color.

One of my booties noticed my glitter toe from exactly a  year ago  today posted on my Facebook wall and asked about it.  Use the same technique, but place the glitter all over the nail. Seal with topcoat.

As always, you cannot go wrong with Shellac because it doesn’t require an e-file for application or removal, and this should hold for up to 6 weeks.  I’ve been doing it for a year, switching over to Shellac as soon as it came out and my clients have gone all over the world with pretty glitter hands and toes.

I had the chance to show off my glitter nails technique during NY Fashion Week, where I had a chance to work the subtle on Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference founder Jennine Tamm (The Coveted), a medium on HolierThanNow and full blown bling ahead on Lucky Magazine panel speaker Karla Sugar.  It works for all kind of women!

FADING COLORS

If you want to try a color fade, simply start your chosen color at the bottom and go as far up as you desire. Fill in with second color.

Glitter Toes – These are very popular in my salon

I’m going to CND’s Boot Camp!

Next Friday I’ll be heading out to La Jolla, CA  to represent Wisconsin with a bevy of other nail techs from across the nation to complete the final segment of “intensive training & testing” for CND Educators.  This is on the trail of a long goal and dream, and it is hard to believe it is happening!  I’m not sure how much more I can really say but I’ve been asked why I haven’t posted to share the news.  Trust me, I’m elated, and will also share as much as I can during the time.  Here’s to the countdown (and some sunshine, golf courses and pine trees)!

To the other CND Boot Campers, if you read this, I’d love if you’d introduce yourselves.  Drop me an email at solessencenews AT gmail.com

Wow! Shellac Service Failure!

Don’t try this in your salon!
This client was getting Shellac manicures at another salon – no cuticle work ever done, no removal, just layer after layer and all peeling from the back and front. She thought because some of it was staying on well past the polish point, that was the point.

Sort of shiny, but not very pretty is it?  She cleaned up nicely with a ton of cuticle work, beautiful new coat of Rosebud and layer of Negligee over it and left smiling all the way.  Remember, PEP is critical (Perform manicure, Eliminate surface contaminates, Purify nail plate).  Shellac should look smooth and shiny and even toned from the moment applied until removed.  Only the tell-tale growout should be the issue.

As a comparison, here is a properly applied Shellac (ayup, with glitter) that was on 6 weeks (client could not get in due to travel and sick):

NOTD: Nailed from London Fashion Week

A few weeks ago Kimberly tweeted me about a nail look she saw during London Fashion Week and asked my opinion.  It was pretty cool!  I asked if she would ever try it, and she said yes – let’s book.  I was on it!

Here’s the original look:

She arrived and said she wanted me to do whatever I wanted, AND that her philosophy was “there can never be too much bling” I was elated.

Kimberly is fashion director for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal spring fashion pages and was stying a contestant for the Mrs. Wisconsin pageant.  Looking at her skin tones and clothing preferences, I went with a layered CND Shellac using a base of silver glitter, Shellac Black Pool, Shellac Negligee and top coat.  I added a final stone to cap things off.  I placed it at the top because I liked how the line ended at it, and *mildly interesting nail fact*, stones placed near the top of the nail are a Russian trend, while other countries tend to place them by the cuticle.

The best thing about this? She has a long lasting look but the Shellac will remove in about 10 minutes.

The end result is flashy and understated all at the same time, and a very cool departure from the norm.  We were in uncharted territory so it took a while to pick and choose and go through, but she happily exclaimed, “It was sooooooo worth it!”   Thanks for the adventure Kimberly!

Tomorrow: Do your clients need discretion?  How to glitter in a subdued manner.

CND Shellac Layering: Northshore Nude

After doing *every single CND Shellac today*, and most of this week, in Cocoa with Beau layered over, I have dubbed this combo #NorthshoreNude.   Cocoa on right is beautiful as is, but Beau over it adds a layer of (as one client put it) glamour.   What’s hot in your salon?

To book your CND Shellac manicure in Milwaukee,

Updated to show, I have two Northshore Nudes, depending on skin type:

Color Swatches – CND Shellac Spring 2011- March Release

Click here for the new Fall September 2011 CND Shellac colors and here for layering options

Finally!  New CND Spring/March swatches can begin. I have seen the colors and layering options a few times over, and they are fun!  Thanks to CND I was able to provide better photos of the spring 2011 Shellac release  for you in this December post  and, as I did with the first set of Shellac, I’ll be adding actual hand watches.  These are all two coats with base and top.

I’ll continually update this page until all Shellac swatches are available.  To get you this information before the March launch, so you know what you want to order and/or try on first, I’m posting photos as I can get swatches.  They will be updated for better lighting/consistent look. Keep checking back.

Rock Royalty – the bottle is not a match. This is a plum/purple

Black Pool – Very rich black

Hollywood – True to the bottle, and even prettier.  If you can handle a bright red, this one is flecked with metallics.  Stunning.

Iced Coral – A very useful layering color, this is also a great peach/pink with a hint of green.  I’m not the biggest fan of frosts but this one is perfect for my skintone.

Gotcha – This bubbly pink is much brighter than the original photo but softer than last year’s Tutti Frutti. Shown with glitter

Cocoa – This is a lovely camel that serves as a really pretty base for Shellac layering or with the right skin tone as an updated neutral.

Original Cocoa photo swatch:

Decadence – This is a tough one to photograph.  It keeps popping out cherry red – I’d say the thumb is the closest in shade.  In terms of swatching, it is very similar to the CND Jason Wu collection red.  It is on the sheer side, like a jelly.  I didn’t think that was possible with Shellac.  Very, very pretty, but looks best with three coats.

Hot Pop Pink
It doesn’t get much pinker than this! Similar to OPI’s Strawberry Margarita.

Beau – You may wonder why you are getting the color Negligee in a Romantique bottle, but wait, there are differences. Beau comes on with a bit of a violet/blue and white transparency. This alternates as a good layering and base color as well.

Clearly Pink Clearly Pink is that crystal clear with a hint of pink color many have been asking for. Although Pink & White/Traditional Frenches have been out for many years now, think of the base color used. There you have it. It makes for an extremely clean looking nail, but is a little too clear if you have any trouble spots or damaged nails. Example below shows how nice it looks on nail, and how exposed any damage will be.

Masquerade
Mmmm, this is one I was waiting for. It has the same richness as Red Baroness but a lot more pink. It photos a bit mottled. While it is highly pigmented, 3 coats can probably ease out any shadowing if you are having troubles. Very true to the bottle color, even a tad darker.

Mother of Pearl

Contrary to most impressions, Mother of Pearl is not a white Shellac with glitter, but a clear with glitter.  It’s very random how the glitter lays – I find multiple shakes and laying the bottle on the side helps get the glitter on the brush.  Very, very hard to photograph, you can see a pic of it overlaid on Black Pool below, as well as how it can look coming out of the bottle

This new batch of colors plus the first release brings 24 colors total, but CND’s original goal had been to have 100 by fall.  Not sure if they are still up to that but these new colors bring the a huge variety of layering options.  Here are a few:

First Look: CND and Jason Wu Color Effects Collection

I first told you about the CND and Jason Wu collaboration here  but then it got even better. CND sent samples over of this limited edition collection which isn’t set to release in the US or Europe until May.  I’m actually going to Wu’s show tomorrow during Fashion Week where his models will be wearing debuting these new shades, and wanted to give you my impressions on the colors:

Miss Wu: This is must have – a stunning oyster with a pearlized matte finish.  Sound unusual?  It is.  Pearl is a big trend this season and Wu has captured it in what is also his signature color with Miss Wu.  The photo shows the color (dry) with the matte finish.  With a topcoat it gleams, but I like the unusual eggshell soft shine.

Brigette: This dusty rose applies much lighter than the final look. The photo isn’t picking up much of the pink but it is very pretty. As with the other colors, this is soft and muted.

Sophia: When this color first went on, the model said “It reminds me of pantyhose.” We had a good laugh, but as soon as it dried we were oohing and ahhing. Although greige is on it’s last leg (it is rumored) this is a beautiful mushroom. It was complimentary with many colors.

strong>Veronica: This red is gorgeous, but it took several coats to achieve the same look. With the other muted tones it is a bit of a shocker in the set.

Tweed: Remember the Ralph Lauren designer paints that were poplular in the 90’s? I ALWAYS wondered when they would come out with a polish set that would mimic the offerings. This set comes with a bottle that is said to texturize the polish to look like tweed. It is reminiscent of fiber strengtheners, and when put on the nail, I’m not sure it made much of a difference. It looked more like your nails were done before bed and your hair stuck to it. A bit of topcoat completely erased any effect, and left all colors in a beautiful high shine. It’s a decent distraction.

This set becomes available in May and is sold by nail professionals only. If you are looking for soothingly muted colors, you’ll be very pleased with this Jason Wu and CND collaboration.

Girl with the Pearl Confession – Win this 2/14

beauty heads toward the light

Psst – here’s a secret: If you’ve paid any attention at all (and it’s okay if you haven’t because I’m about to get you updated) you know that *pearl* is the accent right now for skin.  It’s a trend I love because the looks go opposite of what so many try to do in winter and brightens skin instead of  going the way of artificial tan.  While real pearls have been cherished as a miracle beauty ingredient in Asia for years, let’s go a little oyster-friendly and offer these alternate ways to winterize your skin for 2011:

Hampton Sun Serious Shimmer Cooling Spray

You won’t need to be on a beach to appreciate this shimmer.  Filled with a fresh, herbal perfume base of fine, pearlized microglitter, this spray really serves as two products in one.  The refreshing scent is a great pick-me-up, and the shimmer coverage is perfect to highlight any body part.   One caveat – pearl may show up too light or grey on some complexions.  If so, Hampton Sun Serious Shimmer also offers a traditional bronzer option for the glow to show on your skin.

***WIN THIS***

Would you like to get aboard the pearl whirl?  Leave a comment after this post on why/how you want or would use this cooling spray and you could be selected for a bottle of your own.  Don’t delay – drawing will be held Valentine’s Day, February 14th.

You must enter with an active email address.

$32 retail value, available at Sephora

CND Colors & Effects: Jason Wu Color Collection
Available worldwide May 2011. CND has collaborated with fashion designer Jason Wu on a nail color collection that celebrates real and imaginary “sophisticated femme” leading off with a stunning matte pearl polish named Miss Wu.  You do not want to miss this color.  It’s a brilliant and beautiful neutral warm gray that is a signature color in Wu’s fashion lines (full review in separate post).

Chanel Spring 2011 Pearl Quadra
While Chanel did come out with a dark green polish called Black Pearl, the eye on the prize is in the quads. The highlight in the les 4 Ombres is a perfectly shimmering pearl to compliment the soft and feminine tones in the set. At beauty counters now.

Products received by brand/brand representative for review consideration.

Who doesn’t love a little pop of shimmer?  For the Effects fans, CND is also releasing a new Red Hot Colour Collection that includes a bottle of Just Red Colour that can be layered with Red Sparkle Effect.   Retails ~ $20.00 usd/ 25 CAN

Last but not least, fashion designer Jason Wu has collaborated on a spring line with CND, focusing on the shimmery greys, pinks and naturals that will dominate the season:

  • Miss Wu – super-pale grey/signature Wu color
  • Brigette – warm pink
  • Sophia – soft mushroom
  • Veronica – oxblood red

The above last three are named after Hollywood startlets. The kicker to this collection is the addition of a top coat that adds fiber, going for a tweed-like effect.

Although this polish will debut at Wu’s show during New York Fashion Week, this set won’t be available in the US or UK until May.

A Manicure By Any Other Name

I strained to hear the conversation in the crowded salon.  My next client was discussing with another the possible choices for her manicure. The only thing is, I couldn’t recognize the name of this mix.  Now, I make a lot of custom nail colors , but one thing is that my clients have a tendency to give the manicure colors a name.   It’s the cutest thing!  Names like:

Snowglobe

Tinsel

Mother of Pearl (abalone)

You get the idea.  The problem was, I didn’t have ANY nail color mixes with the name that was being repeated, and I was pretty sure I was hearing them correctly.  It went a little something like this:

client1: I just don’t know.  I really like Bacon.

Client2: I do too!  It is really interesting.  Perfect for winter.

client1: Do you think it is too different? What about the red or this pink?  Oh, but I really like Bacon.

Client2: I like those, but Bacon is my favorite.

client1: Me too!  I want Bacon!

Client2: You should get Bacon.

client1: That’s it. I’m going to do it.  I’m getting Bacon.

When it came time for her to sit in my chair she slid right on in with my color wheel and said with a perfectly straight face:

“I’m going to get Bacon.”

Holy crappy penmanship!  The weird thing is, it does kind of look bacon-ish.

To the uninitiated, that is short for CND Shellac Red Baroness + Cappuccino.

Pro Tip: Get this look!:
If you Shellac or like to get Shellac, you can achieve this color with a layer of Red Baroness and 1 thin layer of Cappuccino. You can call it anything you like.

Young Nails Introduces Professional Only maniQ Colors

New Video Review Posted Here

Eighteen maniQ colors ship January 2011

I have long been a huge fan of Young Nails’ maniQ, a soft gel that has many, many uses for the crafty nail tech. It boasts of a four week wear and had a little secret – you could mix nail polish colors to the base to get a UV cure product with color.

That bit of information was lost on most. maniQ could be as troublesome as it was wonderful. The gel was a bit rubbery and runny, and mixing colors truly an art. Instead of a bright solid color on the nail, there was more of a milky existence. Remember that green glass? Yep, that’s similar.

So it wasn’t ideal for homebrew, but guess what? Young Nails is now taking the guesswork out of the system, for the colors anyway. Launching January 2011, 18 new colors will release with the long lasting maniQ system. Young Nails promises multiple weeks of wear and 10-15 minute removal. The flexible color gel products are also available to cure with UV and/or LED lamp.

Taking a look at the colors, there still may be a bit of the milk, but I’ll hold judgement when I see the product. What do you think?

CND Shellac New Colors – 2011

Swatching on hands has begun! Check here for updates

I recently posted on the twelve new colors CND is releasing March 2011 for their two week, no chip manicure called Shellac.  Thanks to CND I’m able to show you better photos of the Shellac hybrid nail polish bottle colors and swatches.

One of the biggest things to note is the new glitter version called Mother of Pearl.  If you’ve been in my chair you know a signature look of mine is what appears to be an opal glitter fade.  I do this freehand with my custom mix, but I’m very excited to see this in the lineup!

Another noteworthy color is Rock Royalty.  This is a guess here, but CND did a custom blue mix for Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. show and this is carrying forward the trend.  It’s a gorgeous color.

The rest of the pinks and tans are lovely and super feminine – another big trend for 2011.  I don’t know how we’ll be able to wait!

One of my favorites in the group shot is what appears to be a magenta-ish Decadence.

CND Shellac Releases 12 New Shades for Nails and New Packaging

To see hand swatches of the product, check here

After creating a world-wide beauty frenzy May/June 2010 with Shellac, a hybrid polish gel that lasts two weeks without chipping, CND pulled the scheduled releases of their color launches just to accommodate initial orders.  Selling out four times over initial projections, nail pros and salon goers alike could not get enough of the 3-free (no formaldehyde, toluene or DBP)  perfect manicure with the incredible shine.

So it is with a bit of sadness that November would have been the launch date for a new round of colors – but it is okay to get excited because the next 12 colors have officially been announced! Here in all of their glory:
Mother of Pearl, Beau, Clearly Pink, Iced Coral, Cocoa, Gotcha, Hot Pop Pink, Hollywood, Decadence, Masquerade, Rock Royalty, Black Pool

What do you think of the new lineup?  I know, it is a little hard to tell, but you get a general idea.  I’m glad they have a straight black but I wish there was a grey or greige this round.

CND was rumored to be working toward nearly 100 releases by next fall.

New Packaging

CND has also started shipping the existing collection in new packaging.  To distinguish Shellac’s unique formula from regular polish, the product was originally encased in hard, oval plastic tubes with a black base.  It was probably very expensive but not very effective.

All of that has changed with the new boxes that began shipping last month. The packaging is actually more attractive, easier to ship, uses much less plastic and displays/stores better. Total win for everyone.

From oval to rectangle

Minimal plastic still keeps item secure

Slight changes in bottles too – I’m going to miss the more tactile feel on the original top, but new one very easy to manuver

Let me know your favorites or your CND Shellac polish color wish list in the comments

Editorial Shoot: Fall Fashion for Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

hillaryfry_mjsshoot_essievelvetvoyeur

Yesterday I had the opportunity to work as the manicurist on the Fall Fashion shoot for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Editorial is what I love, and it was a blast to be a part of this. I felt very lucky – I had full creative license. Even so, my goal was to highlight nail trends without going too wild – I really wanted to focus on what women would wear day to evening. Big love to essie for previously sending me their limited edition Fall into Fashion collection. I knew the moment I saw the gorgeous, muted jewel tones that they had to be featured! What a way to swatch the essie colors – onto models 🙂

DSC04307

First up is Amber, who wore essie Sew Psyched, a green gray blend that perfectly complimented her skin tone.  I have not been a fan of the green nail polish trend, but this color turned it around.  When we got to Cuvee, the location for the shoot, everyone was asking about “that pretty green”.  It is fall without being too dark, and is totally fresh.

essie_sewpsyched

essie’s Velvet Voyeur looked smashing on model Tiffany.  It enhanced her beautiful pale complexion, dark hair and eyes, and the metallic brocade dress.

That’s Kristin Lindemann, esthetician and makeup artist, creating an evening look.

Ugh. Bad lighting.  Wish you could see better how Heather rocked a fabulous mane of red hair, and essie’s neutral taupe Merino Cool.

Her nail polish was a perfect tie-in with the outfit and shoes.  Also? I want that bracelet.

I didn’t get a chance to photograph Anne, the model wearing CND Shellac (just named a top 5 fall trend by People Magazine!).  She wore Negligee.

Thanks to everyone that made this happen.  Look for the full layout and clothing/jewelry/credits in the September 26th issue of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

CND Shellac: Summary

Milwaukee/Mequon/Shorewood area: Make your appointment now for this 14-day manicure online or call (414) 964-9311
How do you get great nails?  Shellac is the answer.   Here is a little FAQ I wrote for About.com that I hope will answer many of your questions on the product.  Check it out here, as well as swatch posts here and a video here!  And scroll down to see supporting photos of product under weeks of wear and tear.

A Shellac manicure is the easiest way to give natural nails the beautiful, finished look of gel or liquid & powder without going artificial.

For the last 5 weeks I’ve put it to the test on clients and on the most notorious nail polish abusers known: the stylists at Harpo’s Salon in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.   After exposure to water, hair dye, gardening (yes) and cuticle biting, Shellac stayed strong, shiny, and kept the nail beds healthy.

The difference is clear: An example of nail condition after gel and nail condition after Shellac

Before Shellac, Harpo’s owner Peggy Dixon was only able to keep a polish manicure nice for four hours.  Here are her hands after 3 weeks of Shellac!

A quick trip into the life cycles of Shellac.  See for yourself how the nail beds look after 27 days.
shellac_attacked
Client Carly responded immediately to the announcement of Shellac and changed out her color at day 14, even though it was perfect,  to mix it up for her vacation.  She ended up breaking a nail and bending others in a luggage mishap,  but was so blown away that the polish still looked great, and held together other nails that bent, that she sent a photo right from the plane.  “I think it would have been much worse if I hadn’t had the the Shellac on.”  Luvs!

Another thing – Carly is a salon owner, so her hands take a beating with dye and water daily.  Her manicure remained beautiful.

At day 13 she came in to trim back the broken nails and selected another Shellac color. She’s hooked, and so are we!

For CNDers using Brisa, the bottle shapes look similar, but Shellac is only .25 fluid ounces (7.3 ml).  This is not a trial size, this is the actual product size.  FAQs state you can get 20 applications out of the top and color bases.  With four clients the first day, you can see how quickly you could run through this.

The colors are rich and beautiful.  The consistency is of thick polish, but easy to apply.  There are definite tricks to application,  though the product tends to be very easy to work and modify. There is no building with this product, but it can be used over acrylic/gels.

Wondering if a 14-day no chip mani w/10 minute removal is right for you?

CND unleashed one of the big industry buzzes at America’s Beauty Show in Chicago. Shellac, what CND calls their “hybrid nail color” brushes on like a polish, wears chip free for two weeks like a gel and comes off in 10 minutes.
shellac_solessence

As always, CND packaging is slick. At first glance a few common questions are asked:

    • How does this differ from OPI Axxium?
    • How does this differ from a soak-able gel?

Shellac is brush on, and comes packaged just like nail polish. The product is only promoted to have a 2 week wear time, surely to account for nail growth.  It doesn’t require bonder or buffing of the nail.   In this way, it doesn’t seem too different from Axxium or a gel like Bio-Sculpture or Calgel.  And because it is a hybrid, it has the flexibility of a gel but does not provide additional strength, like a polish.

The soak off procedure seems to be the biggest deal. Whereas most brands have a between the lines “10 minutes for every layer applied” CND promises Shellac is a 10 minute soak off in their special nail jackets, with any remaining polish flaked off via orangewood stick. Not bad. Customers were finding themselves in Acetone bowls for 20 – 45 minutes, sometimes having had the first layers of their colors drilled off to speed times. That is gone with this brand.

Here is what to expect during service:

step_1_shellacApply one layer of Shellac base coat to each nail/extension and cure under UV lamp

step_2_shellacApply two layers of Shellac UV Color Coat, cure under UV lamp

step_3_shellacApply one layer of Shellac UV Top Coat

step_4_shellacCure under UV lamp. Clean, apply cuticle oil.

step_5_shellacRemove with Shellac Wrap.  10 minutes w/acetone, twist off, flake off, voila!

  • How do I get this as a consumer or nail tech?

Nail Professionals: CND offers a very competitive package, with decals announcing the salon is a Shellac service provider. Demand has been very high since release, and CND reports sales have been 3 to 4 times initial production.  You should contact your local distributor to find out their order status and see if there is a wait list you can get placed on.

Consumers interested in the Shellac manicure should talk to their salons!

There are currently 12 shades available and the line is hypo-allergenic without formaldehyde, toluene or DBP.

It’s official – We’ll be offering Shellac from the first wave of shipments.  Make your appointment now for this 14-day manicure online

MBFW – f/w 2010 – Ruffian

You’ve gotta forgive me, I’m a little slow on the draw right now.   Fashion Week is in full swing, last time at the tents.  Too many changes going on to attend, but there are some exciting bright spots.  The nails at Ruffian, by CND, were gorgeous!  Matte over blue over foil.
